Don't forget... 1M assets in CA means you have a small modest house in a working class suburb and maybe 1 new Honda Accord that you're financing and an used van for the family. You are also living paycheck to paycheck. It takes a few million just to live a regular comfortable life in any bigger city here.
1M a year salary still doesn't improve your life much since after taxes and everything you're really at less than half a million which is $40k/month. Yeah, it's a great living but you're not paying for a huge mansion at anything over $15k/month mortgage and a $3k/month lease on a Lamborghini. The rest of the living expenses and high cost of living will take all the rest of the money from you and you probably should spend less if you want to put anything away for retirement.
