Mūrūri, I don't think that the trees had anything to do with the land being spared. Did you see how big the trees swept up in Maaī Mahiū? It's the natural route of the water.
This is scary! There have always been 'rivers' underneath but the water level was low. Maybe the old people in Kīūrū/ 87 area can tell us if this place once had a spring, was marshy, or had papyrus reeds growing. Nature takes its course. Maintains the old mapping.

Where I grew up , springs used to form during heavy rains seasons in our houses. We found it normal. Mud slides are expected in lose light soils.
