- Chicken Run 2 Dawn of the Nugget has released 23 years after Chicken Run 1 which has become a classic over the years.
Both movies are from Aardman studios however they both have different Directors. Original voices of Ginger and Rocky have been swapped out with new modern actors to play the parts.
Instead of Mel Gibson playing Rocky we now have Zachary Levi, and instead of Julia Sawalha playing Ginger we now have Thandiwe Newton.
There are other changes made in Chicken Run 2. So in this versus battle we are going to compare the classic Chicken Run 1 to Chicken Run 2 Dawn of the Nugget and see which movie is superior.

I liked the party scene from the first one. Yeah it stops the plot for a short while, but after so much chicken shawshank redemption it was good to see some levity and bonding with them. Sometimes movies need those little breaks from thier plots to give the characters a chance to breathe.
The voice actors changes part was very interesting (I was not aware of this). Here in Mexico they made an effort to get the original (Spanish) cast back for the sequel, and even though you can slightly tell the pass of the years in their voices, it was very much appreciated.
Although I still prefer the first one, making a stop motion movie requires courage and passion, specially with the current state of this genre.

I prefer the original Chicken Run movie over the sequel but I do agree with you that they've really could have brought back the original writers and directors they could have brought back the original actress to play Ginger I rather watch the original movie it had a lot more flavor it was fresh original but the same time it was also very very funny.
3:40 that’s John Powell for you, even his recent movie Migration has a really good soundtrack and that’s a movie about Ducks migrating (still a surprisingly pretty good movie).

The irony in saying Julia Sawalha is too old when her and Thandiwe Newton are just 4 years apart in age (55 and 51 respectively). The director just doesn't want to admit they wanted a familiar face for the sequel (or reboot as they mentioned in an interview) instead going on Thandiwe's performance from Westworld; not that I am discrediting Newton's acting whatsoever.
I guess some films are better left untouched than given a sequel.

Greetings, Eric, I'm excited that you're back with another movie comparison. I grew up with the original, and it'll always hold a special place in my heart. The sequel probably didn't even need to exist.
It's a shame Dreamworks ended their relationship with Aardman. This movie probably wouldv'e been a bit more superior with Present Peak Dreamworks.

When I was watching Chicken run 2, I remember Mrs. tweedy falling into a meat grinder and she ended up NOT DYING!? SHE JUST GETS CHICKEN LEFT OVERS ALL OVER HER!?

Yeahhh the new voice they got for ginger sounds really bad. The new one they got actually sounds OLDER than Julia. Also, when you compared Molly to Melody from the little mermaid two I literally laughed so hard. It’s almost like the writers just watched that movie and then copy and pasted it into this movie. Also, they turned ginger into an overbearing, overprotective mother and I suppose it makes sense, but on second thought, it really doesn’t. In the first movie they make it clear that Ginger wants freedom and she’s willing to do anything to do so they make it clear that she has been living on chicken farms, her entire life and has never even fell grass. I just don’t understand why a character like this would want her daughter to feel like a prisoner? Ginger growing up literally was a prisoner, so why would she want her daughter to feel like a prisoner? Also, why the hell didn’t Ginger and Rocky just sit Molly down and explain to her why they don’t want her to leave the island? Maybe if they would’ve actually told her hey sweetie, if you leave our island then a human might try to kill you or EAT YOU. Instead they turn rocky and ginger into two idiot parents. Throughout the movie, I was watching Rocky for example and how he was a complete idiot throughout the entire thing and every time he would do something stupid I would think to myself. Yeah Rocky in the first movie would’ve never done this lol. Also, the chemistry between ginger and Rocky is completely gone in this movie at the end of the first movie. At this point they’re in love and have a strong relationship with each other and this movie it felt like watching two characters who barely even knew each other being forced to be around each other, and speak to each other. Also, Molly is a character that is unbelievably forgettable. She’s like a mix between Melody and Kiara from the lion King two. There is nothing interesting about her at all and they don’t even really explain why she actually wants to leave the island other than she wants to prove to her parents that she’s brave or something, not a strong enough motivation to be honest. In the first movie, gingers motivation throughout the entire film is escaping the farm or they will all literally DIE. So the stakes are extremely high for ginger in the first movie in this movie Molly is just a bratty little teenage girl who rebelled against her parents, for no apparent reason.
Finally dreamworks gets it time in the spotlight
This does leave me concerned for the Wallace & Gromit movie coming to Netflix later this year.

In my option Hollywood should try to bring back the original cast members for their roles in live action sequels and animated sequels it’s always better that way
Bro Eric, I swear the first Chicken Run literally executed a superbly original story. The first film knew how to provide comedy at good times while sticking to its dark tone and this sequel seems to have abandoned that. I thought that the comedy for this film got too desparate. A serious situation should not be downplayed. I know Aardman can do so much better.
Honestly, even though I enjoyed the sequel, I have to agree and say this sequel wasn’t needed.
I still like the sequel, but the original is the best.
I also recall the first film have an awesome dark sense of humour. Like when one of the chickens knits a rope to hang herself or when Fowler criticises America on being late to every war. The second film seems to have setups for dark humour, but chickens out into lame payoffs.
The reason Rocky was able to escape that way was because the villains didn’t know he was there plus Ginger wouldn’t try to escape without her flock

That’s not the reason why. The real reason is because of Mel Gibson’s “anti semitic” remarks and drama with his girlfriend is why they didn’t recast him. They should’ve casted ginger again though. The “too old” excuse is just a BS excuse.

19:10 You can blame every Aardman film bombing at the box office in North America since Arthur Christmas for their shift to streaming. They were not doing good at all since no major American studio wanted to release them and Canal did it on their own. Early Man only grossed 8 million in the US as an example

The YTP series 5 nights at Tweetie’s Weed Farm is probably a better Sequel to the Original than the actual sequel.

One of things I liked about Chicken Run 2 is that we get to have more human characters besides Mrs. Tweedy

I haven’t seen chicken run or any of the aardman movies but their stop motion designs look perfect and in recent years, I think that aardmans movies are starting to look cheap and not theater worthy so I think that’s why they are going straight to Netflix.

Rocky sounds way more different in the sequel than the first compared to Ginger imo. Also it's the Thandiwe Newton! At least put some respect on her name rather than just "new voice actress"
I Love Chicken Run, it’s One of those Animated Movies you just can’t help but feel Enjoyment on how Much Fun it is, 10 out of 10, It’s One of Dreamworks and Aardman’s Greatest Film that I can Rewatch Everytime, as For Dawn of the Nugget, it’s a Fine Mediocre Film that’s a 5 out of 10, yes it has Flaws, Too Many In Fact, but I didn’t Hate It when at least the Stop Motion is still Impressive and the Cast are Solid, it’s Disappointing is some Areas that it’s a Movie you would watch Once and unlike the Original it doesn’t give you the Same Feeling or Rewatching It.

When I watched Dawn of the Nugget, it was very much a disappointment but I didn’t think it was bad. That might just be because I was in denial that Aardman could make a bad movie. I enjoyed all of Aardman’s earlier movies with even their weakest movies at least bordering a 7/10 for me but I can’t say the same for Dawn of the Nugget. It was absolutely a letdown and it is probably worse than I thought it was when I initially watched it.

at the very least, besides that both main new voice actors giving similarly solid acting in their own right for the leads, the sequel offered great fun with the same adventurous spirit to the first film, only the other way around of doing breaking in instead of escaping technically, so at the end of the day, like they usually say, NOTHING BEATS THE ORIGINAL GREATEST OF ALL TIME THAT IS ON A LEVEL WITH Iron Giant, makes sense?

People are allowed to keep their names after they remarry. It’s not an uncommon thing. Plus given the type of person Mrs. Tweedy is she probably forced her original husband to take that name and for all we know Mr. Tweedy had a different name before he married her.

Considering Aardman has been around since 1972 and this is their first truly bad movie, that’s honestly super impressive and just shows how good of a studio they are aside from their newest film.
I mean even Early Man and their Star Wars Vision episode weren’t very good and it does have me worried that Aardmqn quality might be going down hill.

The original, for me. Mixed feelings on the sequel. Not bad by any means but the new voices bother me, except for David Bradley as Fowler. Loved him as Fowler, he was perfect & I already loved Bradley as Geppetto in Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio. But unfortunately, Fowler was fucking wasted in this movie. I question some of the character choices with Rocky & Ginger. Rocky, to me, seemed like an idiot at times & Ginger... straight-up lies to Molly at 1 point which is the reason why she argued with Rocky in the 1st movie! 🐓: U see over in America we have this rule. If u wanna motivate some1, don't mention death!

But... this just needed a few tweaks & at the very least, needed Julia Sawalha back. 0verall, eh, I'd just stick with the 1st 1.

The first movie had to much going on. So in my opinion it’s a 5/10.

The sequel honestly frustrated me more from its potential more than anything else. The entire time I thought. You know that’s a good idea for a sequel to Chicken Run. But it never got fleshed out. I know Ginger & Molly’s dilemma is compared to a lot of direct or dvd Disney sequels. But I thought it was a good idea at first. With the visual of Rocky & Ginger building a crib around her that’s pretty much a more innocent prison. But one, it’s over explained by Molly saying freedom & Rocky saying how she’s just like her mother. Like thanks, it’s not like that was already established from the spoon digging. But it’s not really justified by not showing why Molly wants to leave the island. Maybe establish a sense of repetition with her day to day. And every time she looks out across the water she sees something new every time. It’s simple, but actually diving into the message that keeping your kids naive doesn’t keep them safe could’ve been expanded on way more than the usual just let your kid be free message so many of these films boil down to.
Also, from seeing Mrs Tweedy in the trailer (btw why spoil that when it’s built up to in the actual film) I kind of thought this could go in a new direction. Considering how Mrs Tweedy was left in the first film. I thought it would’ve been funny to play up her business woman persona, then have her completely snap at the sight of Ginger. And that sort of happens in the film. But not as funny as it could’ve been. Like from the perspective of the other humans. This woman is just having a complete mental breakdown from the sight of a single chicken. I kind of thought that dynamic could’ve reasonably replaced Mr & Mrs Tweedy’s dynamic from the first film. But instead it’s weirdly underplayed.
I could go on. But overall. I didn’t hate this film as much as it frustrated me and with how many ideas I saw that I thought could be actual good ideas for a chicken run sequel. Which I’ll happily take over sequels that I can’t see any good ideas in & don’t justify their existence in the slightest. But I guess that’s the question. Do you dispose a film that has potential but it never fully lived up to it. Or do you keep coming back to that film to keep reminding yourself of the ideas that you know can be good if they were executed a little better?
My opinion is that it's...okay. Not insultingly bad but also not exceptionally good like the original. It was fun seeing characters I love come back but it was dampened by the nonsensical ageist reasoning for recasting Ginger. Does it need to exist? Probably not. Is it's continued existence a blight on the animation industry? No, it's just an fairly safe sequel that luckily doesn't ruin the originals legacy, unlike the Star Wars sequels.
