I think there is a naivety in the "acting" community. Not willing to accept they belong in one genre only. That a martial arts film star can do dramic-only roles. Or possibly the opposite....dramatic actors to think they could do a MA film. Ones with no MA training. Few have done it. But they usuall.y end up having the actors fake it e.g. Jason Bourne films. Karate Kid films. THough those actors weren't ever considerdf "dramatic". Just "mainstream". JCVD was a great "MA film star of the 80's". His moves worked for that time where "Flash" sold tickets. Wouldn't work today. As people are more "educated about MA". What might actually work in a "real fight". The film fans today want "realism". As close as possible. Which is why the Bond films began leaning more towards "realism" over "entertainment". Daniel Craig Bond films. Jason Bourne film fight scenes. John Wick. Sadly the numbers of "talented" martial artists have dwindled drastically. The "golden age of martial arts" as past (that was between the late 60's to early 90's). Mostly the 70's to late 80's. That's when we had the "legends". Truly gifted athletes. Clearly on another level. There's a change in the "mattial arts cullture/community". There was a time when there would be 5 or 6 martial arts magazines on every on every magazine rack. Now there are none....or very hard to spot. Actually there's a change going on in many "communities" e.g. music industry. Legendary rock bands are dying out. As they are either retired, key members have passed away or those that retired are making a comback (a few)....but aren't being marketed. So few know about their combacks. Or that htey are still working. Digress.. Is sad...
@Anderson c , yeah I’m agree with what you’re saying. I just wanted to add that before (until maybe late 90’s) there was an air of mystery around martial arts. Most people thought that if you learn some secret technique of Kung fu, Karate or Aikido, you could defeat anyone lol. But then internet arrived and many of these fake martial arts masters were exposed. People now know the truth, and want to learn or watch more realistic things like boxing or MMA.
