Chief Kokoi: the fight to regain ancestral territory

  • Chief Kokoi is a former Toshao of Aishalton, a village in Wapichan Wiizi, Guyana, and the chief of the now-defunct Region 9 Toshaos' Council. In this interview, he tells his story as a land defender and discusses the Wapichan people's decades-long struggle to regain control over their ancestral territories that fall within the borders of modern day Guyana. Today, the Wapichan in Guyana hold title to less than half of the territory that they lay claim to.
