    Thanks Steve K, I used 125mm * 14 gauge bugle screws fixed through timber droppers that were connected to each ceiling joists and the new support beam. You can get pre fabricated metal droppers, but i find getting the large fastener into the timbers tends to lock everything together a lot better. You can see this taking place from 6:30 - 8:10 in the video. Cheers and thanks for watching.

    In that way of placing the reinforcement beam, it does not receive the weight of the roof sleepers. In my opinion, the sleepers had to be cut and the reinforcement beam placed in the middle, so that the loads converge on the reinforcement beam. However, we can see another wall that supports the ceiling load

      Hi Jack, I used the same 125mm*14g screws back the other way to connect the droppers to the beam, the droppers were 70*45mm, so the screw through the 70mm section still bites into the beam 55mm. Hope that explains it a little better? Feel free to drop me an email if you want some more details. Cheers mate.

    Hi , Thanks for your videos they are
    really great help for DIY person like myself. I have an issue replacing my kitchen
    window with a wider one in my about 80 year old 2 story house. The new window
    is 4 foot high the sill has to clear the kitchen cabinets by doing so I will
    have only 5” at the top to bottom of the joists instead of 8” the allowances
    for the header. Is it possible to use a steel lintel for wood joists above my
    67” new window? If I’m not mistaken the load on the joists will be about
    45lb/sft for first floor ceiling for two story residential house building. I
    also need to know how to fasten the lintel to the king and jack studs.
    Thanks
    again very kindly.

    • @OurBuild
      @OurBuild  Před 8 lety

      +papoony1 , Thanks mate. Yes a steel lintel can be used, although it would normally mean that steel posts get installed on either side of the opening to support the steel if it's in a timber framed wall. If the walls below are brick then the steel can be supported on that. I would recommend bouncing it of a structural engineer though before trying to tackle the project, they will be able to suggest the best method according to standards and regulations.
      Good luck with it!
