      I think sales still get to me, I try to ignore sales but when I think, or overthink about them, I get more motivated to buy them. That's my struggle.

      Hobbies! I love making things. Sewing projects and papercrafts take up the most space. I'll get it all organised and then new crafting stuff comes along and... boom! Messy again.

    I've always preferred investing in things instead of experiences, because experiences had the potential to be disappointing or underwhelming, and were a one time thing, whereas buying clothes or makeup or technology had the potential of bringing me joy every time I used them.
    It took me a while to realise this mindset was rooted in insecurity, and that I was turning to shopping to avoid processing negative emotions. By that time I had become a hermit and my studio apartment was filled to the brim with all the things I'd accumulated, which had lost their initial spark and were now adding extra stress to my life. Plus, what good are clothes and makeup if you never have an occasion to wear them?
    Since then I've been in therapy for a year, I did a very emotional closet declutter, where I let go of everything that I had been holding on to like security blankets, I moved to a bigger apartment and I'm in the process of decluttering and organizing. I've also limited my purchases and spent a lot more time debating if I need a new item in my life, because I've learn the hard way that every single item we buy will occupy space in our brain as well, and the weight of that is often not worth it.

    A little over a year and a half ago I got rid of my 2-year-old queen mattress, box spring, and basic frame (gave them to friends who needed upgrades from very old mattresses) and switched to a Japanese floor pad. It's done wonders for my back and is super comfy. Plus I can literally take my bed with me when I go visit family. They don't need to make up a bed for me because I brought my own lol. My mother still thinks I'm crazy (and she's no pack rat) and sometimes still gets upset because they have to sleep on the air mattress I bought just for their visits when they come, but Dad understands that I'm not keeping a bed that takes up half the space in my bedroom just for their two-weeks-a-year visit. Lol.

    As someone who is a bit older, and therefore space and money aren't really the bottleneck but time is: when you think about that Netflix subscription, don't just think about whether you'll get your money's worth of use out of it. Also think about whether it's worth it to you to spend those 10hrs of your life on the service! Spending a little bit more than €1/hr might hurt you much less than wasting hours upon hours on a service that doesn't really improve your life.
    Now, I'm not saying that you should never enjoy "silly" or "unproductive" things. But be intentional about how many hours you really want to spend on things. Lifetime is irreplaceable, much more so than money or space in your home.

    Hi Vera, once again you hit a home run. I know it is for beginners but it is a reminder for all of us. Great teachers such as Buddha and Jesus were minimalists. Jesus even said to sell belongings and give to the poor. He also said it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than a rich man to get to heaven. I am now seeing minimalism as a spiritual journey to get rid of excess baggage both materially and mentally. We try to donate to those less fortunate. From an environmental perspective, if people didn’t buy things that destroy our planet, we would be much better off. There are so many benefits from minimalism. I am looking forward to removing all obsessions and unneeded material items in exchange for a simple and happy life. Thank you once again for sharing something so very important that it can make a positive impact on everyone’s future. 🙂

    This is a great video because so many people are interested in minimalism but don't understand how to sustain it.
    I gave my girlfriend a lift to the mall because she can't drive right now and i offered because she's a friend in need. Anyway, i was really proud of myself because i kept seeing great things that i thought i needed but resisted the impulse to buy and realized that i really don't need those things. Sometimes it's about self control 😊 i don't always succeed but i always try.
    Your tip about constant decluttering is spot on. I find that my mind is at first unwilling to allow me to part with things but if i take it slow i find that after a few weeks i'm more at peace with letting that thing go. It's a process and remember to be gentle with yourself.

    I think I need to search out one of your videos on the mental side of decluttering. I'm an hsp and when I feel overwhelmed, decluttering helps and clutter certainly adds to my stress. Family can't understand and say I need to learn to live with it but I crave visual calm and the clutter brings me to tears. It seems to hold so much power for inanimate objects. It infringes on my mental space, overwhelms my senses and just is a big spanner in the working of a home if things are always in the way! There's a reason they say "a tidy desk, is a tidy mind". That's a perfect example of how i can think so much clearer when my space is clear

This year I did some cutting flower plants for the house, some food like salads in pots. The friends I gifted the pots last year came with other potplants, they loved it I gave them mine. Oh dear, now I have 88 pots. Minimalism in gardening Is a challenge XD

    Thank you for sharing these examples on minimalist mindsets, Vera. I totally agree that buying certain things only brings temporary happiness. It can also have the opposite effect overtime if your use of the item ceases when you intended to use it frequently. I feel upset sometimes when I spend money on items that after awhile just sit and gather dust when I initially convinced myself I would use it all the time. These purchases where usually made during periods of boredom. I’ve recently understood that since I work on a computer all day that I’m not really interested in spending my free time with electronics too. This realization has made a difference. Thank you Vera for the insights today, and I hope you enjoy your weekend.

    One question I learned to ask myself is how and when I anticipated using an item I was thinking about buying. I am a sucker for a gift shop and I often get really excited about items more because of the context in which I find them. For example, when I visited the Harry Potter theme park, I desperately wanted to get wizard robes and a wand because I saw all these people dressed up in the park and it looked fun, but when I asked myself how and when I intended to use the robes and wand outside the park, it was clear I had no use for them outside that context. So I passed. Since then, I often ask myself this question and it has saved me from a lot of unnecessary purchases.

    I've stopped buying presents for most events/people because to me, it's more of a "let's exchange cash" deal. My friends and I go out to dinner or to an event instead. Or I bake something for them. My Mom and I decided we'd rather do something together too, so we go to a Mother's Day tea instead of me buying her flowers and we went to the Immersive Van Gogh exhibit for her birthday. We both enjoyed the time together rather than the "stuff" bought... I just wish my Dad would get on board!

    Thank you for your video! Will you do a similar one but go more in depth with having a minimalist mindset about projects, relationships, thoughts?
    The thought process often is like this for me: 1 happily have many ideas on what I would like to do, explore on my free time 2. Happily starting to plan it 3. All sudden the ideas have become an 'to do'-list and I get anxious if they are not fulfilled and the joy of them disappear... How to keep a light and simple approach to thoughts, ideas, plans, project's? And how to let them go and do grief all the 'missed' opportunitys? I guess fear of not following my dreams, carpe Diem kicks in when the plans doesn't happens (and in the end maybe I am to tired to do it or the plan wasn't practical possible anyway)
    All my best wishes!

    Hi Vera! Perfect day for this vid. I just got rid of my bookshelves and put the books I want to keep or read in bins and boy does it look much better and neater in my bedroom. I got rid of about 5 big shopping bags of books and still have a lot but they are now safe from dust and it will save me a lot of work. It was hard work but so rewarding!! As I read my books I will give it away when I am done unless I know I will read it again or it has a special meaning for me. Hope you and family are all doing well. Hugs!! 🤗🤗🤗🤗💚💚💚💚

      @SimpleHappyZen  Před 4 lety +1

      Sometimes the fact that an item gives you joy, is reason enough to keep it :) But there's a difference between real joy, and just holding on to an item because of attachment that isn't based on what the item is currently doing for you. If that makes sense :) Only you can determine which one it is for each item

Sommige kleding stukken zijn emotioneel en ik kom steeds verder om ze weg te doen, dit zijn lange jurken van weddings van mijn 2 zoons en andere gelegenheden. Maar die jurken zijn over 24 jaren oud! I have a real problem with "it might come in handy" or "I still like it", even if I've not used it for years. This has been handed down from generations who didn't have much, who employed "make do and mend" and repurposing. However, I am 'time poor' and I know that having these things hanging around wastes time and energy. In reality, I often could go and get another in ten years time if I really needed it and I don't have the time to fix or repurpose much!

    On 2: it depends on the purchase. Experiences of course will always add value to our lives, but certain purchases can also be an experience, and thus be less fleeting. Books, for example, because you can learn something, or be transported to a new place, by reading, so the joy lasts longer. Other purchases, like clothes, are more fleeting, as the newness of owning it wears off.

    • @SimpleHappyZen
      @SimpleHappyZen  Před 4 lety +1

      Yes books are kind of in between I guess :) They're definitely also an experience

  • @petitsjoujoux5011
    @petitsjoujoux5011 Před 4 lety

    Minimalism for me is about enjoying the little things in life that I currently have. If there's something that is hurting me or weighing me down, I can let it go whether it's an old friendship or an item that has no more meaning. I think of experiences and items as almost equally in a sense that I have many friends who are unhappy from FOMO if they don't experience everything in life or if they don't travel to as many countries as they have hoped for. Or maybe they've traveled the world and is still feeling empty inside. That's because they are always seeking on "having more" instead of enjoying what they already have. This is why I think experiences and items are kind of equal to me because if you think you don't have enough "experiences" or "items", you can be unhappy and lost in life.

  • @dr.dariapizzuto7668

    I guess the biggest challenge for me is other people’s opinions... Just yesterday I went through my bookcase and selected some books to be passed along to other people. And folks were wondering- why? Why? Because I read those books and they don’t serve me any more. I believe that the majority of books we own should be shared with other people after we are done with them. Books are becoming obsolete anyway (sadly). For me, books are becoming mementos that is why it’s important to do a regular “evaluation” of what I own on a regular basis. Oh and I also stopped buying books opting to read digitally instead. Yet I still do love a feeling of a paper book 📖 ❤️
