- In this video Paul Andersen explains how ecosystems respond to disruptions. Disruptions can cause changes in the number and variety of organisms. It can also lead to migration, extinction or even speciation. Ecosystems that have a higher biodiversity are able to respond to large disruptions over time. A K-12 teaching progression is also included.

This video inspired me to understand something that I've never thought of. When comparing the tropical rainforest to the monoculture of the plantation, the monoculture of the plantation allows plant predators, whether they are insects or blights, a very concentrated and rich place to feed. Therefore, monocultures by their very nature enhance the chances of a predator getting out of control and destroying a plant monoculture, because in a diverse environment, these predators have to work harder to feed as the food-source is much more distributed.
Just a little history; the British put all the Irish eggs into one basket. In those areas, the British took over all the fertile land, to grow crops and sell them in Britain and the rest of Europe. The Irish were relegated to the most barren areas that only supported potatoes. Similar things happened to the Native Americans. The best land was taken over by white Americans, while the native Americans were pushed onto reservations, which were usually on the most worthless lands.
