Leatherback People (Episode 1) | On the Frontline

Nature Seekers is an organization that has spent the past 35 years committed to protecting the Leatherback turtle population during nesting season in Trinidad. Each year, Nature Seekers rangers engage in sea turtle monitoring along the 8.8-kilometre-long Matura Beach, which helps prepare and collect data before, during, and after the turtle nesting season. From March to August, the beach plays host to over 200 turtles per night, with an average of 2,000-3,000 turtles nesting in a season, representing half of the nesting activity in all of Trinidad and Tobago. Matura Beach is one of the last remaining strongholds for the species in the world and is critical for the survival of the Leatherback turtle, and Nature Seekers has played a central role in bringing the local community together to protect and conserve this important habitat and species.
