What is your favorite extreme telephoto?
Looks like this one!
Looks like a keeper. Thanks for this
Waiting for the tamron 70-180 to drop !
This one and I too have found it very good for portraits. 😊 Love using it on my A9.
I did change the tripod foot with the Kirk arca swiss foot with QD socket for quick release of the strap for tripod or gimbal usage. Another bonus with the foot is that I can use it on my 70-200 GM as well.
BTW: The lens works great for Infrared.
Last year I bought the sigma 100-400 contemporary to use on my Sony a7iii and works greats for pictures of people. But for animals in movement it don’t develop well. So now I’m trying to get the Sony.
I put this on my 7Riv and it's a beast. I can drop into APSC mode, get the 600mm reach and still have a 24MP+ file. Great lens.
It retain 24mp file is not about lens it’s 61mp of a7r4!!
@@MoizIsmaili That's what I said-I put it on the 7Riv and still have 24MP at 600MM equivalent. Not are what you're trying to say.
Great vid, as always. It’s on my list!
Thank you Stefan, your videos have been a great help for me making my mind up between this one, the 200-600GM and the new Tamron 150-500. Finally decided to go for the 100-400GM with my A7RIV. The versitality / close focus range were my main reasons. I want to be able to go out and shoot whatever catches my interest. It never works out for me to go out with the intention of shooting only birds or only flowers or whatever. That is almost a 100% guarantee I will spot something awesome too close or too far away. Hopefully this will put an end to most of the frustration.
Great review. I just picked up my copy and love it. I've recently stepped up from a6500 to a7iii and have this lens plus the Sony 24-105 f4 and love that lens as well. So I'm covered form 24-400mm in the very solid Sony system. My next purchases to round out my kit will the the 1.4 teleconverter and the Sony 24mm f1.4 GM. That should cover all my needs for the foreseeable future. (Tip- if you are shooting outdoors check out the 'G-Cup' by Guerrilla Products for any of the a7 series bodies, it's a quick and easy replacement eye-cup that blocks out stray light. Well built and super comfortable) No affiliation, just love that accessory for shooting in bright light. Thanks again for a great review.
Awesome review! Thanks for the hard work. 😃
Thanks bud. Appreciated!
Man! Your channel deserves more subscribers!! Great job!
Thanks man
Going to use mine as an "intimate landscape" lens as part of my travel kit. Just picked it up today.
Another great video. This is one of the best Sony Lenses
It really is!
Amazing lens. Thanks for the review
Thanks for watching
Great Video. I fully agree with what you are saying about this lense. I have a copy and absolutely love it
So good!
Thank you for this...can you please do a tutorial on how/when to use mode 1 vs mode 2 and having steady shot on/off? I’m interested in bird photography and just got this lens. Thank you.
At 3.00: all current Sony A7 cameras have DMF at your service in the menu, so a switch to manual on the lens is superfuous. Also: you can program physical buttons for manual/AF, so. Wonderfull lens indeed.
True, I just liked the option to grab the focus ring and go! Creature of habit I guess.
Thanks for review 👍
No problem 👍
Thanks for this excellent review Srefan. What is is the Mode button for?
Nice review! 👍🏻
Thanks friend
One of my favourite lens, but for wildlife tend to go for the extra reach though, my go to is the Sony 200-600mm f5.6 -6.3
great review.
I just ordered this lens ,I think it is gonna be great for my landscape photography 🙂
Good choice!
Thanks!
Thank You Stefan.
Great review, it looks like an awesome lens. Currently struggling to decide between this and the 70-200 GMii. I live in the desert and I’m not so sure a pumper is the best choice for my conditions. I also shoot frequently in low light conditions and I need all of the photographic speed I can find.
Just got this lens last week too! Was deciding btw this and 200-600 - like u the minimum focus distance and the weight and length of the lens bought me over to this lens!
Good choice!
When I got the 200-600, I put this lens on the side and use it more for macro these days. 400 2.8 is coming soon and I'm 100% positive that will be my favorite lol
Stumbled upon your channel Stefan a couple weeks ago when I was looking into the 90 macro, and Ive been checking out your videos every since. Followed you on Instagram too. I too am stumped between the 100-400 and the 200-600, as you mentioned, the size, weight and minimum focusing distance is a great factor, also the versatility. The 100-400 can be used for more than just wildlife and birding, it can be used on portraits too or landscape while the 200-600 is almost used specifically for wildlife and birding (sports?) thanks for the great review friend. One small thing that’s keeping me from finally making a decision is that I also want to get the 70-200GM in the future and I think the 70-200GM and 200-600G combo makes more sense than the 70-200GM and 100-400GM combo. How about you? Did you have a 70-200GM and still got the 100-400? Or did you skip the 70-200 and went with just the 100-400?
I am amateur photographer with emphasis on grandchildren's sports (specifically basketball and soccer) and portrait photography. I own a Sony A7III. I am loving my new Sony GM FE 100-400mm F4.5 -5.6 lens for soccer and I know basketball will also be terrific. Took me awhile to get to this point and I have purchased several lenses. I really trust your recommendations and reviews on lenses for this camera. I own another lens that I am ejoying for portraits and that is the Sony FE 1.8/85. Before I purchsed the Sony GM lens.... I purchased two Tamron lenses -- the 28-200mm F/2.8-5-6 and the Tamron 70mm-180mm F2.8. Neither of the Taron lenses had Image Stabilization and the range on both lenses was a little lacking. However, both lenses were very fast at high speeds and CF. I would like your opinion if should keep or sell the Tamron lenses?
Hi Stefan ,Amazing lens and thanks for the review . I am planing to buy this sony 100-400 mm lens but my camera is sony 6400 . i am in confuse state ,This combination will workout or not ? I need your guidance here or please do a review on this !Thanks for your help !
Good thorough video my friend. I gave you a sub and look forward to more good content. I have been using this lens for about a year for football, baseball and basketball and it is a great lens. I use it with the Sony A9 as well.
Thanks friend. What a beast of a lens!
Not a easy decision I have been trying to weigh up other cheaper lens in that range. However I love your reviews and there always spot on thanks for the info Les.
I love this lens! Just got done using the 200-600 and I am definitely going with the 100-400 GM
Enjoy!
Its a lot lighter well a third less
why did you get done with the 200-600?
I bought a lightly used copy for $1850 USA. Love this lens. Sharp and versatile. I've used the 100 focal length for a lot of landscape shots where I need more compression.
That’s a great deal. Where did you find it?
Tyler Focus camera had it used for $1999. While looking at the camera on their website they started a chat with me. We started negotiating and three days later it was delivered.
RM Clark That’s incredible. I had no idea negotiating with any of these companies was an option. Good job!
@@Thumpr110 I didn't either. It took me by surprise at the time and I had to weed through whether it was legit or not. I doubt they negotiate on new equipment but on used if they can hit their margins they will work with you. At least Focus Camera did.
I just order mine at deals all year for $2098.99 will see when i get it next week.
Ordered mine yesterday wit an A9 II!
Plz make a video
Sony 70-200 f2.8 vs 100-400...
I have the 70-200 f2.8 gm, I'm hopefully in the future gonna get the 200-600, 100-400 is to close to the 70-200 I think
Thanks for sharing, just got sony a7iv for our channel, looking into telephoto
How do you find the bokeh on this lens at 5.6? I shoot on an f4 at the moment so I’m nervous to swop over but I love the rest of this lens’s features
What are your thoughts on pairing this with my a7c? Does that seem like an odd couple?
Hallo Stefan. Do you plan to review new Sigma 100-400 f5-6.3 for Sony emount, and how it compares to Sony 100-400GM?
At what shutter speed do you turn off the image stabilization on the lens or do you leave it always on? I just got “that thing” 1.4x teleconverter for my 100-400gm
I like this lens a lot, but have a few complaints after a year of use. The zoom ring never feels right when hand-held even on full loose, especially compared to the 70-200 2.8 GM. I don't feel comfortable taking it out in the wet and it doesn't have a metal serial number plate on it. No 90 degree click stops on the mount either. Having said that it's a great performer, autofocus is fast and it's been great for sports. The minimum focus distance is awesome! You can basically do macro with it, and the colors and contrast are really good too. This and the 200-600 have been tiding me over until I pick up the 400 2.8, which I was GOING to but the corona virus cancelled all spring sports :(
Thanks for advice! I'll soon order the Tamron 70-180, but regularly consider 100-400 mm instead. I see if I ever is going to buy the 100-400 GM I must first rent it, to see if I like using it handheld.
Will this reach to the end of a high school football fields. Right now I use the Tamron 70-200. But the 100-400 is a class of it's own.
Nice review, but could you also tell the centimetres beside the inches? You already tell grams besides the pounds, this really helps for non-American viewers.
Will do
What do you think of the tradeoffs of this lens vs the new Sigma 100-400mm? The Sigma is much cheaper and lighter but a bit slower with no teleconverter option. How much of an issue would the loss of aperture size be in your personal experience? Does one or the other have a more beautiful rendering? Thank you.
Hey look, another few thousand dollars later, there is rubber gasket. Sony you guys deserve a medal for taking this long.
Yes a great lens just to be aware do not over tighten the tripod foot knob as it is very easily stripped as I know to my cost and the only replacement part I found was on e- bay at silly money
Thanks for the heads up!
After much research it seems like 200-600mm is wildlife dedicated and the 100-400 is way more general useful.
Can i mount this to Canon EOS M50 using an adapter?
Does your lens creep on tight? I just got mine and it creeps a little on tight, wonder if this is normal? Why doesn't it have a lock?
Anyone used this lens for concert photography? When they send you to the back of the venue and need some cool shots? Any tips? is it good?
This is still an amazing lens in 2024. But is it true, that the f5.6 minimum aperture already starts below 200mm?
Hi This is Prasun Shukla from India. I have a quarry for which would like to Know your opinion.
I want to upgrade to Sony A7R V need your opinion on if i should go for Sony 100-400 mm lence or Sony 200-600mm as Sony A7RV has internal Zoom.
Depends on you friend. If you shoot only birds, 200-600. The GM is a lot more versatile and smaller.
How much you got it used?
I have a dream...
But what if say someone has a 70200 f2.8 which do you recommend?
100-400 is the winner for me.
Great, what do you think is better this lens or 200-600?
"Better" isint a fair word. They both have their pros and cons. The 100-400 is definitely more versatile but its going to come down to what you shoot. Check out my buying guide on both. Hope that helps. 😀
Stefan Malloch thanks
Oooh... a perfect video to watch with no money 🤣
What would Sony have to change to earn that extra half star?
My dream lens q_q
Have you ever given a lens 5 ⭐️ @stefan?
Maybe a few things, not as a whole though. This one I sat forever deciding. One of the closest to perfect for me.
Would you recommend this lens for moon shots?
Its capable and you could always throw is in crop mode for more reach.
@@StefanMalloch thanks Stefan
I paid 3500 for it in 2017 when I got my A7Riii
4.75 stars for me. would be 5* if the tripod shoe was a long as the 200-600.
1 meter and 7 foot comparison sums up this review! @5:55 .. exaggeration is the word
Wait, there are full frame lenses that aren’t equivalent to 35mm? I thought all full frame mirrorless cameras were equivalent to 35mm. Thanks
Full frame is 35mm. What did I screw up?
@@StefanMalloch At 1:05 it states on screen "35mm Equivalent 150-600mm."
That was meant for APS-C cameras. No biggie. He says it later in the vid.
@@standhd Thanks, that makes sense. But, since this is a Sony lens; wouldn't the 35mm equivalent be approximately 66-266mm? I think Sony's aspc cameras have a 1.5 crop. Thanks, again!
@reinvestorintally the Sony crop factor is 1.5. So 100x1.5= 150; 400x1.5=600.
200-600 better value for most people's pockets. can hold it's own against this fela
Good price but not even close to as versatile imo.
I have not had good results using this lens with A7riv. Images noisy and not sharp. But with A7iii it works great. Overall I am disappointed with the Sony A7riv camera. Poor ISO performance. Also the camera has terrible resale value. I am going to stop buying the newest cameras and wasting my money. The Sony A7iii is all I need.
How much you want for it? 😂 Truth bud.
