    Awesome video, thanks! People who are anxiously awaiting their turn in the queue are hungry for Steam Deck content so this is great! I would be interested to hear more about your experience with size, layout, and weight. Especially since you mentioned in another comment that you have small hands. In the comments on another channel there were some diehard Switch fans that were adamant that the Deck just wouldn’t work for a child or adult with small hands. Even though they had never even held a Deck before. So curious about your own experience with comfort. Thanks again!

    • @DrearyMiddle
      @DrearyMiddle  Před 2 lety +4

      Sure, I might do a short video explaining more about that soon, but with the Joycons specifically because the buttons are stacked on top of the analogue sticks I find I have to shift my whole hand to switch between the two. Compare that to the deck where the buttons are stacked to the side of the analogue sticks, I found I can get away with placing the tips of my thumbs on the sticks and have the joint hovering over the buttons and just rock back and forth when I need to Switch.
      Obviously, after years using an Xbox controller on PC and that layout has probably contributed towards how my hands rest whilst using controllers, but it did also remind me a lot of the Wii U game pad feel but slightly more compact, so if your child can use a Wii U game pad then they should be fine with a Steam Deck

      A little awkward but it's definitely lighter than it's size lets on. It is about 200g heavier than the Nintendo Switch which means that it's like holding both the Switch and a phone in the same hand so if you can do that then you're good to go!

    Hi
    Thanks for this video!
    I'm wondering if it would be possible to have your impression regarding image resolution on TV when you plug the Steamdeck in, as we would for a Switch.
    Is the game as good as it is on 7inch screen? Is the image instantly adapt?
    It's a feature I love with the Switch that would be a "game" changer for me if it's well supported by the Steam deck.

    • @DrearyMiddle
      @DrearyMiddle  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi! Thank you for the kind words! To answer your question, it's a PC! Customisability is its speciality and it is only limited by how powerful the hardware is. So if you want you can drop the graphical quality and increase resolution or vice versa! I would say though that as a general guide, if the game is from the last 3 or so years then you might have to limit the resolution to 720, but older than that it should easily be able to handle 1080 or higher.
      Your mileage may vary but the PC community is very lively when it comes to creating guides on the best settings to choose for a wide variety of hardware so chances are someone out there has already done the hard work for you!
      As an added bonus though, you can also use it in dual monitor mode as well, so you could have something like the game on the big screen and a guide on the Steam Deck screen, some games even support multi-monitor setups as well. And as an added added bonus you can also connect to a display wirelessly as well using the built in Steam Link service which you can read more about here: store.steampowered.com/remoteplay#anywhere. So I have the Steam Link app on my Apple TV, and I can stream my games from the Steam Deck to the TV whilst using the Deck as a controller. If you wanted too, you could also connect a few controllers via bluetooth and you can even host a couch multiplayer session that way too!
      But I'm going to do more testing and report back in to coming days, perhaps in a follow up video!
      Wow, sorry, that was a lot. I got a bit excited.
      TL;DR: On a TV newer games should run at 720, older at 1080+. Your mileage may vary!

      Thanks! I actually don't I'm afraid. The more expensive version of the deck (as seen in this video) has a special coating on the screen to reduce the severity of reflections and I don't know how that would mess with the adhesives on screen protectors. Plus I'd want a screen protector that also does the reflection thing, and looking through two layers of that might be tough lol. But when I'm not using it, it lives in the included carry case so it's not likely to be scratched... hopefully

    I'm glad someone is using Linux too! Really good impressions video, it might be good too to say that some games don't work at all in the Steam Deck because of compatibility issues.
    As far as I see, you don't have that problem since (probably) you are keen more on Single Player focus games or retro even. For other folks it might be a problem down the line because of some pesky Anti-Cheat software.
    But it's safe to say most of the Single Player games that use Proton work very well if not sometimes better on Steam Deck and most of the problems with games that are not marked as verified is because of the UI or controllers that probably were never meant to be enjoyed in a screen so tiny compared to a monitor or a proper controller.
    It's still green in my opinion, but I believe in a few months it will be amazing and stable experience.

      Thanks! I switched to Linux full time about a year ago. I'm a developer by trade so I use a Mac at work, not super in to how Windows works so I moved , and now my dev environment is basically identical across all my machines.
      I probably should've spoken about compatibility yeah but it genuinely slipped my mind because every game I threw at it, even multiplayer worked. I do mainly play single player games yeah, the only multiplayer game I play right now is Final Fantasy XIV which still does work-ish. But of course, mileage may vary. What's interesting though is that I have a couple of games that say they won't work at all, but still run fine so I'm wondering if perhaps there's something later on in the game I haven't encountered yet.

    • @moister3727
      @moister3727 Před 2 lety +1

      @@DrearyMiddle Impressive. I don't think it's necessary to talk about compatibility issues if you are going full into Single Player games, is rare when it fails. The not verified rank can vary a lot depending on the game, too ProtonDB has an aproximation rank of every game on Steam tested, so that's how I guide myself with games. Only 2 gave me headaches, 2 games out of 500 in total.
      But it's a fact most people do want to know if their favorite game is avaible to play instantly, even if they will never touch it on the Deck.
      I'm sure the compatibility issues will go away with time. At least with games, can't say the same about programs unless they make them avaible for once natively in Linux like the the Adobe Suite and Microsoft Office 365.

    • @DrearyMiddle
      @DrearyMiddle  Před 2 lety

      Yeah, good shout on ProtonDB, fantastic resource I'd say. As for non-gaming software you're right, it's crazy how next to nothing I've thrown at wine has really worked. Not that I really use much Windows exclusive software anyway, but none of it has worked. I guess that games using DirectX all kind of have the same starting point so once one game works it's easier to get another game to work, whereas with software, you've got like 30 something years worth of proprietary standards to sift through and if a program utilises just one of them that hasn't been implemented, it's going to cause issues

      @@DrearyMiddle Exactly. For that very same reason I'd like to strictly stick to FOSS, for my work I'll have just to use propietary software. Once you get use to it, it's pretty doable to make a good workflow out of it in my opinion.

    Great review! For me, I’m in no hurry to get one. There are a lot of ways that the Steam Deck is objectively a stronger device than the Switch OLED that I already own, but I don’t have a steam library and I’m not eager to built one up so I can justify having a new device to play all of them on. But I’m excited that people who game on a PC can finally embrace the beauty that is handheld gaming. Perhaps down the road I’ll be eager to play AAA titles that aren’t on my Switch.

    Consider looking into Switch emulation on the Steam Deck. If your Switch is from 2017 it's easy to hack it to copy firmware and games to your SD card, which you can then load onto your Steam Deck to play using Yuzu or Ryujinx. Yuzu has better performance but Ryujinx has online multiplayer support with other Ryujinx users via local multiplayer emulation (as well as LAN support that works between Ryujinx users and even actual switches). Steam Deck can't emulate every switch game flawlessly, but it can run a good chunk of its library very well. Mario Kart 8 works fantastically and you can even add the new DLC tracks.

    I love my steam deck but i still find my self just picking up my switch really quick and just gaming on that with the deck have the same problem i have with my laptop is i mainly just like tweaking settings in games and seeing how they run more than actually playing the game, it's like "oh wow this runs nice" plays for 30mins before ending up on netflix.

    • @DrearyMiddle
      @DrearyMiddle  Před 2 lety

      Yeah I get that. The Steam Deck hasn’t been able to fix that unfortunately, I did say to my friends that it would be nice if Valve allowed developers to detect if the game is running on the Steam Deck and just automatically load a configuration that is guaranteed to work, perhaps with an option to toggle between higher quality or longer battery life.
      But, luckily my first game is Disco Elysium which has a very stylised art style so even at max settings it’s not taxing the Deck too much, I just limit the frame rate to 30 just to squeeze a bit more battery life out of it! But yeah, I like both systems and I’m glad we’re getting choices in this form factor

    I am on the fence about buying the parts to build a new pc, or to buy a steam deck. What do you think I should do?

    • @DrearyMiddle
      @DrearyMiddle  Před 2 lety

      I'm afraid that's not a question we can answer. You need to look at your situation and work it out that way. I'd say the two best things to look at is what kind of games are you likely to play and where you want to play them? If you want to play a lot of big budget titles or multiplayer games then it might be a better idea to look at getting the parts for a new PC because I think in a few years time you might not be so happy with how the steam deck is performing in those kinds of titles. But, if you only play single player games and like kicking back on the sofa or on public transport then I'd say go for the Steam Deck because it's a great price for an all-in-one system like that, the sacrifice will be in a few years time where games will have to start being played at lower settings.
      I hope you're able to come to a decision, but don't forget about the Steam Link app as that allows you to stream your PC to a phone/tablet/smart tv etc.

      It might be a saturation thing honestly, PC has so many exclusives that it can be hard for some to stand out. I don't necessarily think it's a bad thing, but I have heard that about Sony's exclusives even that they're way too varied and it kind of makes it hard to identify what is a Sony exclusive. At least with Nintendo their games feel like a Nintendo game, for better or for worse
