Once one of the largest fishing ports on the North East coast, this beautiful coastal hamlet is now a well-loved base for exploring Yorkshire's cliff top paths and discovering the delights of rock pooling and fossil hunting on the small sandy beach.
Formerly one of the many fishing centres in England, Staithes Yorkshire is now largely a tourist destination within the North York Moors National Park.
The name Staithes derives from Old English and means 'Landing-Place'. It has been suggested that it is so named after being the port for the nearby Seaton Hall and Hinderwell. The spelling Steeas is sometimes used to indicate the traditional local dialect pronunciation /stɪəz/.
At the turn of the 20th century, there were 80 full-time fishing boats putting out from Staithes. A hundred years later there are still a few part-time fisher men.
There is a long tradition of using the coble (a traditional fishing vessel) in Staithes.
It was reported in 1997 that the Royal Mail were encouraging the occupants of Staithes to number their houses instead of relying on names. Whilst the regular postperson had no difficulty with the narrow streets and cottages, the relief postal staff were getting confused. Royal Mail also claimed it would aid efficiency by their postal machines which automatically read the addresses.
The CBeebies (CBBC) series Old Jack's Boat, starring Bernard Cribbins, is set in and filmed in Staithes, with Old Jack's house located at 4 Cowbar Bank in the village.
The 2017 Oscar Winning film Phantom Thread starring Daniel Day-Lewis features the famous cobbled streets of Staithes North Yorkshire England.
In 1745-46, Staithes' most famous resident, Captain James Cook worked in Staithes as a grocer's apprentice where he first gained his passion for the sea.
He moved to nearby Whitby where he joined the Royal Navy. William Sanderson's shop, where Cook worked, was destroyed by the sea, but parts were recovered and incorporated into "Captain Cook's Cottage".
In this 4K Virtual Walking Tour of Staithes Village we see the streets winding their way down to Staithes Beach, and all the quaint and cute houses of Staithes Fishing Village England.
I can thoroughly recommend a visit to Staithes England. It really is one of the best, cutest and most cinematic UK seaside towns.
So if you're looking for a relaxing day out, or maybe a holiday in a picturesque fishing village atmosphere head for Staithes UK

This brings back so many happy memories of my late partner also called Linda she passed away over a year ago, she suffered with Parkinson's, we rented a cottage at the top of the lane over that narrow bridge, it was hard pushing her wheelchair up that hill, but Staithes has to be the most important memory of my life with her. Such a very beautiful place, thank you for this excellent video, I think your best 👍

When you go abroad you have got to to queue up at the airport
pay extra money for an airport taxi to get you there in the first place
you then after speak the language and sort out the foreign currency
what "" all for a bit of sunshine
which half the time you are not guaranteed
And you have just paid out thousands
so you might as well use that money and come to places like this
To me it's far better than eating foreign muck and sitting round a swimming pool all day
I have done the foreign holidays and I have done the British holidays and I like the British ones the best
Especially when you hit the nice weather
but on saying that it's nice to see it in the winter aswell

@@jackwatsonepic626 In many countries of the world it is eaten organic or of good quality. All places in the world have their charm for culture. You have to have an open mind. I am Argentina, and for us it is very expensive to travel abroad to know. I could also say my country is better for its landscapes (Aconcagua almost 7000 meters above sea level, Iguazú Falls, Perito Moreno Glacier) 4 climates and natural resources. But, it is interesting to know other cultures as well. The more we close our minds, the more ignorant we will be.

Staithes - just up the road from us. The senior resident women wearing traditional plain long skirts and black bonnets, would sit outside their cottages with their spinning wheels. My late godmother, a TV bit parter and extra made what was to be the last of her TV appearances here. I remember fishing boats filling the harbour, with others being moored in Staithes beck. There was also a vibrant fish market. My family used to buy fresh fish as it was landed.
On the sharp right hand bend as you walked towards the harbour there used to be a butchers with a delicacy of home. baked pork pies, delicious, I have never tasted better.
I knew it then as a working village with some tourism, not the mass attraction it is now.

I remember going there in the late 60s for a week with the school, staying in the old military camp on the hill, at night making plans for the great escape from the huts, it never happened we always fell asleep, it must have been all that fresh air. God knows how they put up with hundreds of screaming kids each year. After watching this I think I’ll go visit again.

Thank you it was lovely to walk around Staithes again, I spent a great deal of my childhood there. My grandparents had a cottage there, my great grandfather built a cottage on Broom hill. Suggest you could go up some of the steps to the top of the village, lots of steps up through the cottages, so many different views and interesting little passageways eg Gun Gutter. Thanks again for a wonderful memory

Love Staithes. When we first visited and parked at the top of the hill, I wasn't sure what to expect. On walking down the hill I realised that it was indeed a lovely little village. The granddaughters loved the cardboard statue of Bernard Cribbins, from Old Jack's Boat, which was on display when we were there. Off now to watch your video of Saltburn by the Sea as we tried to find this place once but failed miserably!!
