  • Valuetainment Weekly Episode #15:
In 1903, 80 million pounds of dynamite were used on a project that would minimize a typical 45 day journey around Central America into 8 hours. That project is now a worldwide landmark known as the Panama Canal.

Panama's official name is the Republic of Panama, not "Panama Canal". The Panama Canal is in Republic of Panama. Panama is NOT in South America, Panama is in Central America. Really surprised to see this was posted with those major errors.

Wrong, the official name is República de Panamá, remember it is a Spanish speaking country; therefore, the name is in Spanish. And South America wasn´t wrong at all. Panama, geographically is part of Central America because of its location in the continent, historically is part of South America because of our relation with the Nueva Granada or Gran Colombia (Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador and Panama) and culturally in the Caribbean because of our traditions and culture which is similar to that of the Caribbean because of the Caribbean people who came for the building of the canal which is totally different to the culture of the Central American countries, so, the poster wasn´t all that bad.

So no, I am not wrong. Geographically speaking Panama is located in Central America (part of North America) and while we (Panama) decided to join the Gran Colombia doesn't change our geography nor did it in the past. For political reasons some will say that we were part of South America, but the fact is Panama is in Central America. It's like saying Hawaii is part of North America (politically yes it is), but the fact is, Hawaii is in the North Pacific Ocean and is not part of any continent.

Moving into our new house there next month, and pretty excited! Indeed... it's their "all for one, one for all" culture that was the biggest draw. The canal brought commerce alright, but also incredible diversity. The USD$ is their currency, but they don't worship it as a culture - "quality of life" is about family, pride in your work, community - and life itself. Unified, politically benign... it's gonna be wonderful to live in a country that the rest of the world doesn't hate!

He has to say Panama Canal when he's referring to ships crossing it and by the way the Gringos built the Canal not the Panamañians the Canal built by the gringos placed Panama on the map plus they gave your Democracy back by taking pineapple face out of power. True story. Stop hating the gringos that gave the Panas the Dollar! The U.S still pulls the strings there. Weather you like it or not.

Geographical clarification: Panama is not in South America nor in North America, but in Central America. THE AMERICAN CONTINENT IS FORMED BY THREE BIG BLOCKS OF LAND... Thus North America, Central America and South America. Again, the Central American isthmus does not belong to either North or South America... It’s independent and formed by seven countries and Panama is one of them.
