      The leading edge on the prop is always thicker than the trailing edge, like a wing so you did have the prop on backward and if the specs say 3 bladed prop with a 3s then do it, right? Overspin and the prop spinning easier because of being on backward? Operator error for sure, still, thanks for showing a 2 or 3s plane, I prefer the smaller ones for the fun stuff.

      It's good of you to admit to frying the motor by over-propping it for your choice of battery (contrary to manufacturers instructions); not so good to have buried the mea culpa deep in a response to a single comment, after dissing the hell out of the product up front.

      @christopherleveck6835 Před 10 měsíci +2

      Hey, you should have used the 3 bladed prop like they suggested because with a 2 bladed It's already spinning too fast, and you put it on backwards. Which means it's working too hard. You burned up your motor. Or speed control. Or both.
      You only make these mistakes once. No big deal.
      Someone might not because you did IF you tell everyone what happened.

    He got close by 'feeling' the ESC (which would have cooled down by the time he got to it), but it never occurred to him that he fried the outrunner by: i) swinging the larger 2-blade on 3S (which ZOHD _specifically_ says NOT to do), and ii) running the larger 2-blade _backwards_ (which has been demonstrated back in the early days of electric airplanes by both AstroFlight and Master Airscrew to draw more current).

      @@klikmausMy thoughts EXACTLY! If you fly planes surely you must understand what an airfoil is and know that a prop is an airfoil. Like you said you can tell which way a prop goes just by looking at it. On top of this we clearly see the numbers on the prop at the beginning of the video facing REARWARDS. 🤦‍♂️ How this confuses Nate is beyond me. Did he mount the wings upsidedown, no.
      Also that thin black plastic cover on top of the fuselage is to mount a GPS under, NOT for an FPV antenna, for which there is a slot just in front of the canopy. 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️
      I bought the Drift a month ago as a multipurpose plane to take along on vacation due to its quick toolless assembly and compact box. I haven't had a single issue with it. Great little plane!
      I've always said that people that believe in the sky fairy ("God") should perhaps reevaluate their education, I think we have a prime example of this here. 🙄

    I know everyone's said the props backward (which it is) and the way to remember- since motor is on the back, it spins backwards (reference a front prop as you think through it during assembly. At this pt during assembly you can correct motor spin by swapping wires if needed). Then lastly on prop orientation- the slants of the props act like a spoon scooping air so orient it so it scoops air and forces it back).

  • @Videolinquency
    @Videolinquency Před 11 měsíci +4

    It's on backwards, all right, but I think the main problem is the fact that you tried to use a house of cards as a trampoline. Drifts aren't meant for line of sight fun at all. They are minimalistic endurance wonders for FPV, meant to explore the next county at less than two amps throttle all afternoon. So their motors and ESCs are as small and light as possible, not designed to buzz around the field. There are even warnings from ZOHD that the Drift has a never exceed speed of 15 m/s or so. Don't criticize the model, guys, it's not designed for your part of the hobby, but for mine, and it shines there. Mine has more than 100 flight hours on it using the original motor and ESC. And the tiny lid on top? Not for a camera or antenna, but for the GPS unit. Happy flying!

    I have the white Drift and run 3S with the prop for 3S. As many others have said, you had the prop on backwards Nate and you defo should not use the prop designed for 2S packs when running 3S. It will pull way too many amps, especially when you fly it line of sight and are doing roles etc. If you had been in calm winds and could keep to around 1/3 throttle or less, you might have got away with it (especially if prop was correct orientation!). Better luck next time. My Drift flies great and I have it set up FPV. I wanted the 2 blade more than I wanted to follow my directions. They should probably make a bigger deal about that in the instructions. Also, you were flying pretty aggressively for this plane. @@markmcc21 all else being equal, sure. But they were clear in the video that the seller intended the 3 bladed prop for 3s use, which means by definition it must be a smaller diameter and/or lower pitch in order to present less load to the motor.

    In the pushers I have, the convex curvature of the prop always goes to the front of the aircraft for greatest efficiency, that is to push the air backward. Even then, the motor or esc should not have quit like that. I was looking at that plane for a future little fun plane. No longer interested. If a manufacturer decides to quit your relationship with them because you demonstrated their faults, that is your gain and their loss, and you are better off for it.

    The prop is not backward. It would not go forward with a backward prop. What you have is an over powered underproped motor. Similar to running it full with no prop. It needs some resistance, and didn't have enough. That click sounds like the esc is cycling, but the coating on the coil melted and is now shorted. 1) motor temp? 2) spin it fast with hand. If it stops immediately it's burnt. If it spins a few rotations from momentum then the motor is probably fine. A brushless motor has built in dynamic breaks(works great for multirotors) if you touch and 2 of the 3 wire together and spin the motor hard by hand it will stop immediately if 2 wires are touching. If none are touching it will carry momentum and spin a few rotations. In multirotors you can only spin up a motor as fast as you can slow them down(maintaining balance) so motor breaking is very critical for exact maneuvers. Brushed motors have no breaking, so they are used in cheap toy drones. And race drones all have brushless.

      😂 I use backwards props when my props have too much thrust. Backwards does not make it spin the wrong way..

    • @airfriedquadsbw
      @airfriedquadsbw Před 11 měsíci +1

      @nicksharp6950 what? Why not adjust throttle? What? Is your throttle on/off? If that is the case then get a different pitch prop. Putting one on backwars would just kill efficiency? And your laughing? You know a prop is just a wing spinning. Your using a clockwise backward? So the thin side is the leading edge and the thick side trails. What kind of flight times you get? What does that turbulence do to your motors? Do you use a flight controller? What does that noise do to it?

    The numbers on the prop ALWAYS face the front of the plane regardless of whether its mounted on the front or on the back (as a pusher). Don't feel bad, I did this same thing with another Zohd plane and put the prop on the right way and it was so much faster lol :D

    I believe the prop is on backwards actually. In my experience, I have always had numbers labeling, and what not on the backside or offloading side of the prop. Because if you have decals, and what not on the forward side of the prop that will mess up, how the prop cuts the air.

    Hi Nate, quick question. The plane looked kind of "squirly" while flying. Did you have dual rates and / or expo set up? I know the flight was short, but did you get a feel for how smoothly (or wildly) it fles? If you ever replace the motor, wouldn't mind seen a video revisiting the plane.

  • @Hoomi2
    @Hoomi2 Před 11 měsíci +1

    My Zod Drift had multiple problems with control going weird during flight. On the last flight, which wasn't a high number of flights for the plane, it suddenly rolled and went in, causing massive damage to the plane. I ended up taking the motor and ESC from it and put them on a Flite Test Sparrow, which has been flying beautifully for nearly a year now. I had more problems with the Drift than I've had with any other plane I've flown.
    The motor and ESC have been fine with the 3 blade prop and 3S power.
    As others have mentioned, the numbers on the prop ALWAYS face towards the direction of travel. The prop will work facing the other way, but the efficiency is severely diminished.

    Can you set the timing on the speed control? Sometimes there is a process to setting the timing of the ESC to the particular motor you are using.... The reason the motor worked is because the peak voltage was high enough to spin the motor. There may be a setting for the number of cells you are using in your battery, i/e 4s or 3s...
