Searching for 140 year old Gravesite (Henry Chad Christian)

- In this video I head down on the Huon Pine cruise ship Arcadia 2 to the notorious Pieman Heads where hidden beneath the scrub lays the remains of drowned constable Henry Chad Christian. Christian, (grandson of Fletcher Christian - HMS BOUNTY) was drowned at the heads whilst attempting to cross the dangerous sandbar at its entrance in a small boat in 1879. His remains were found several days later and he was buried on a hill overlooking the scene of the tragedy. The location of his grave has since been lost but using an old surveyors chart and some newspaper articles describing the gravesite I head out in attempt to find it.

Schools need to use your vids for teaching Tasmanias history. Lessons wouldn't be boring. The Tasmanian tourist board also need to cut you a wedge because your doing their job for them. Looking forward to part 3. 🙏
One day! I know some primary classes are watching my In the footsteps of the Franklins series which is pretty cool, and some college classes have been using my Fincham episodes in their outdoor education. As for the tourism board well I'm sure they think reposting others work for free is good enough to promote the state.
My gosh, that is a stunning part of the world, isn't it?
As usual I love the historical slant you have on your adventures. I'm so annoyed that I didnt do quite as much investigating when I lived there in the Glazier's Bay area. Wonderful video x from Sth Oz
Cheers mate. Yeah there's a lot of good history down that way. Always easy to sleuth online thats what I normally do on rainy days to find my trips.
So he lost his life going back to try and save his boat, there is a lesson in that for all of us. I think you got pretty close to the spot and the view was stunning.
Love your work Rob. I'm captivated by the look of the Tassie wilderness, and the history is super interesting. Great work with the vid.
The adventures continue. Keep them coming Rob. Cheers
Oh, and thanks to you and Levi for the coordinates to Weaning Creek, spent 2-3 hours trekking up and down the creek taking photos. Had to walk about 5 Km there and back to get to the creek because of a tree across the road, both worth it. Thanks again.
Great to hear mate!
Just discovered this channel. This is what CZcams is all about! Awesome job Rob!
Those 3 parrots flying at the 9.04 mark look like Orange Bellied Parrots & if so, they are incredibly rare. The coastal habitat is certainly their environment.
slick bro your editings getting wicked too great vid story and footage five gold stars hehe
Much appreciated lad
Mate I love your videos. Have you ever thought of maybe doing a week down the west coast in the scrub to set up a bunch of trail cams to try and get footage of a thylacine?
It would be one of the greatest discoveries in the last 80 years!
Keep up the good work!
Thanks Micheal, glad to hear you enjoy them. I'm actually working on a Thylacine trip as we speak. Looking to head out in December. Let you know how I go, cheers.
G'Day Mr.Parsons👍🏼 01:20hrs here and Good to get an update on Your search. I imagine several storms over the last century plus has filled the sunken depression from an old Grave. Beauty scenery though and outstanding attempt👍🏼 Surely the Spirit appreciated Your presence🙏🏼 As Your Viewers appreciate Your videos✌🏼 Cheers🍺
What a beautiful part of the world. Great video Rob thanks
Another brilliant story and video, thanks so much Rob 👏👏
What a magic spot Rob and so much history keep them coming and I'll keep watching.
Thanks Rob, another fantastic journey through time mate. I can’t wait until your next segment.
This has been really cool, looking forward to part three! I have a Ferry very similar to the one you showed, near me. I often go a bit out of the way to enjoy riding it.
Thanks again Rob. Really enjoying the series once again.
Much more exciting and enticing than I would have given credit for. Great video and im looking forward to the next instalment! 😀
Thanks Kerri stay tuned!
Glad you gave it a shot, lovely looking place.
Thanks I tried
I remember how clear the colours and the sky was down there.
Lovely memories.
I find it sad that the people that died are no longer remembered by most and that the places they rest are long long gone in most parts
Great stuff mate had a ball watching this and learnt a heap 👍🏻
Another wonderful video , keep them coming !
Absolutely love the way you put this together and tell the story. Great investigation! Gosh Tassie is beautiful
Thanks Jess
Nice place you've got there in Corina Rob... But that trek you went on was in the very area I'd been to many years ago when I was just a lad with my late farther who was a member of the North-West bush walking club in the 60s/70s at Ullverstone . Can't wait for your next adventure along the Pieman River should be very good....Pete from Devonport... 🚢
Thanks Pete, that area is pretty amazing I wasn't expecting that type of scenery. definitely will do a good walk along there one day.
@@Rob.Parsons Just want let you how I appreciate at helping to Tasmania on the map by not going into the Touristy areas...Pete from Devenport...🚢
Gosh I love that area down there awesome bit of history mate thanks for sharing
What a wondrous spot Rob 👍
Thanks rob for another great video, well done.
Love it mate, what a top bit of country!
Thanks for these vids mate, awesome adventures 👍🏻
Cheers lad!
Thanks Rob for another awesome movie

Thanks Rob 👍👍 did that trip a few years ago now ..makes me want to go back . Cant wait for 2morrows adventure 🛥😃
Thank you Rob. Looking foward to "next time" Rick.
Thanks rick!
stunning vid Rob!
appreciate that thanks!
Another masterpiece Rob. My wife even watched it. I like that Pieman. Looking forward to the next one.
That was interesting. Scenery was great as well. Can’t wait for next one.
A special part of the world Rob, have loved my time there at the family shack since 1970. When we were allowed we used to drive old buggies cray fishing out the North Shore tracks. Cracking weather you got. I rate The Pieman over The Gordon
Its a hard choice for sure!
Oh wow, Webster and Foster were my ancestors. I'm assuming this was Gamaliel Webster who's pine headstone still exists in a museum and has been replaced to preserve the original. He previously owned the Trial Harbour Hotel,
A couple of times you mentioned "rocky inlet", but the original report you showed, referred to a "rocky islet" or small island.
Good point! The rocky islet would still be misery island. (in my interpretation)
@@Rob.Parsons
Agreed.
They used very decriptive names for features back then.
I used to prospect a creek named Misery Creek. When the March flies were out, was very aptly named.
Oh Lord!!! this hill is very beautiful with very beautiful and blooming flowers, also there are cute animals looking for food 😍😍
So nice, thanks!
Keep at it Rob I enjoy watching you on your adventures cheers
Brilliant
Thanks
You're a legend mate thanks!
Shame you couldn't locate the grave, but a fun adventure nonetheless. Great vid Rob! Do we really have to wait a whole week for the next installment? Sigh!
Thanks Terry it was a great little day out on the coast for sure. No you don't have to wait for the next week I've just uploaded the new one to all tiers of Patreon! 😉
Epic.
Good job, bob 👍🏻
Good on you, rob..
Never disappoints this lad.
Appreciate that mate thanks!
Gorgeous area!
❤️
Very professional production mate.
A TV series should be out there for you somewhere, sometime !
Thanks Sid
We towed buggys and motor bikes and four wheelers and such down to the heads on barges. A few of the buggies were lost over the years. I don't think we lost any tho.
आप की खोज मेहनत और लगन से मैं बहुत प्रभावित हुआ हूं यह सब बहुत ही सुंदर है मुझे ऐसा ही पसंद है।
I reckon you might’ve been on the money with that location. Great vid, man🤙
Cheers Mattsy
Can’t beat that place for solitude!
Thanks for another epic vid. I just love the history of Tas.
That pigface is stunning! What a top spot 👌
Glad you enjoyed it
Great tale - & what a decent chap to take you safely, where you needed to go. Am impressed with that location - wonder if they allow Kelpies? If I ever get mobile again has to be on the list. PS: Are Congratulations in order? Hope Erin is super-good? Cheers!
Thanks for the congrats. :-) As far as dogs go I think that area is prohibited from memory.
@@Rob.Parsons Reckon you're right - proper wilderness, no pets allowed - but really hope to get over there one day. Do wish you & Erin Everything Wonderful & Happy - take care of yourselves. 🥂🍾🥂🍾
When I looked at the map for the first time I figured the grave site was on the southern side of the river. Down in front of where the shacks are
Thats interesting!
@@Rob.Parsons pretty sure there used to be a fenced off area there too. Near a footbridge over a ditch that user to fill up in winter like a drain almost.
I think there was an easy west row of tea tree close by too.
You must of sold some of that gold to afford the accommodation, not cheap for old shacks , it truly is a lovely spot
There is a few snakes in that area too Rob 😥
maybe one on the tarkine logging to give a local-ish perspective?
A hard find, that one is, mate...
Rob, was the ‘slab’ at the gravesite, a slab of wood or a slab of concrete? Thanks for sharing your adventure. 👍🏻🙏🦘
Just a slab of Huon I reckon
Gooday Rob, could you tell me what metal detector you use? Thanks.
That ones a gold monster 1000.
Rocky 'islet', not inlet. A small island of rocks.
I’ve now watched all over your videos. Please stop uploading then - as they’re too awesome and the scenery far too stunning it makes me want to run away from home and move to tassie
Thanks for the good vids keep up the good work 🙂
Glad you like them!
The ferry ruins the tranquility.
Thats not how you bake an egg lmao
That little critter at 9:00 minutes, is that a Wombat? You’ll have to excuse me, I’m an American.
that is a wombat!
What map App do you use?
avenza
@@Rob.Parsons thanks mate
Were the crumpets good? 😂
Another cracker video Rob, but damn you now I really want to get back over to the West Coast.
DO A FLIP!!!
