The issue with Vallejos is that it trades utility for damage farming, but it can't even do that well, so you're just left with a mediocre ship
I play a fair bit of Cleveland and Wooster, and they both have IFHE specced. The damage is just so much more consistent. I think it would help this ship as well (I really don't understand using Top Grade Gunner on a ship with such good conceal), but I agree, I would not get this ship for 22K steel.
Yeah, pegging your dpm on fires is super inconsistent. Maybe you don't roll high for fore chance, or everyone DCPs them.

Appreciate the review. Over many moons of potato gameplay (sadly, not of the same potato quality as Potato Quality) I finally have a small stash and was looking for something to spend it on. Good input. Tier IX is an awkward tier.

Among the premium T9 usn cruisers, what would you recommend?
PQ, 3 things....
1. I put slot 5 rudder on mine and was much happier in open water. Without it 10.7 sec is too slow, and I still have 10.4 detect which is workable.
2. I'm sure part of reason the DPM is so nerfed down is it's a T9 cruiser. WG just flat wont give T9 cruisers decent DPM unless they are floating dev strikes like Neptune.
3. That said, I initially had hope at the beginning that this ship might at least partially break that Trend considering it was being announced for steel and was losing all utility. the thought was they would recognize these two facts and give it quite a bit better DPM to at least give it some sort of selling point. after playing a few games it's not bad but certainly not what I had hoped for. what I'm about to say next may seem a little brutal but it is how I feel. Of course WG is partially to blame, but quite a few of the players, that you probably personally know PQ, are also to blame. In testing I saw quite a few players in divisions doing things like a triple division with a Black and a Friesland (or a comp like it) back when it had the 5 sec and later the 5.5 sec reload. I saw Bonks doing it, and I saw one of the 07 sub clan players doing it 1 battle. I know WG tells testers to see what the ship will do but there's a difference between that and spamming these smoke division over and over again just to rack up numbers. I do not trust WG to go to the trouble to discern these numbers from regular play they probably just assume the ship is too strong and this is the result. You can't tell me you have not also noticed Cruiser DPM numbers in general have been falling in the last year or two for test ships. I can't help but think this is one of the contributing factors in this.
The one thing which is much better than Worcester is the ballistics. The arc is so much flatter.

I'd say Vallejo is for the Pan-Asian Cruiser players who are sick of having great on paper DPM but terrible applied DPM, and wants to see what a light Cruiser should be able to do without having to grind the entire USN light cruiser line.
I also agree with other commenters that Top Grade Gunner on a ship with 9.35 concealment is nearly useless. You would have been far better off running IFHE, then you would have had the 32mm pen to really farm BBs, and given the lack of decent 2 point skills for this ship, you still would have had a 7% fire chance from Demo Expert. Per salvo you still have a great fire chance, only you would also be penning 37mm of armor letting you really melt the squishier BBs.
I also want to note this isn't the first time Wargaming has released an American T9 premium that's kind of worse than the tech tree variant. Tulsa comes to mind, 6 203s that have lower DPM than Buffalo. Along with worse range, and worse radar to boot.

I was interested in Vallejo when WOWS first announced the ship. After reading comments others posted and seeing your review I don't understand why WOWS keeps releasing poor quality ships, and this one for steel. I used the 25% coupon to obtain the Burgogone for 22,500. This release follows the release of the equally poor performer, Anhalt. A really neat gift in an Xmas container.
The Wargaming Wiki review states
"Vallejo is a potent threat to any enemy aviation. Even without her Defensive AA Fire active, attacking her or nearby allies will be costly for many Tier X carriers, and potentially impossible for most Tier VIII carriers at the start of the battle." and "Thanks to her improved ballistics and fast shell flight times, she is much more comfortable engaging targets at medium and long range than most American cruisers. As she can keep her distance better, she is also more comfortable in open water, although players need to keep her slow speed and lower survivability in mind." These seem to be questionable statements.

I can say that you're 100% correct
She plays longer range than most American ships and does it "more" comfortably
Which is to say, she does it exceptionally worse than something like... anything else lmao
And her flight time is still dogshit. A Vermont is hard to hit at 16km

This ship would be OP with Wocs raw DPM because of the flat trajectory of the shells. At the range the Val shoots at, the Wocs would land very few hits so its effective DPM would be low. This is basically a T9 Lazo with a play style totally different than other US CLs. However, unlike the Lazo, the Val has a heal, good AA and airstrikes against subs, flatter shell trajectory, and better turn circle which makes it a much better ship than the Lazo which has poor AA, depth charge, floaty shells at long range, and turns like a brick. Note that the Lazo is not a bad ship so.... On the downside, the Capt built has to be different than other US CLs though to take full advantage of its capabilities and that is a problem for those who have only one or two Capts with lots of skill points. I personally think that this ship is well balanced if used in its role which is long-range fire support.

Those are battlecruisers, not super cruisers.
Battlecruiser is basically a cruiser hull with battleship size main guns 11in+
Super cruiser is a heavily armoured hull or battleship hull with cruiser size main guns
They're not the same thing they just aren't
USS Vallejo was a projected Fargo Class light cruiser
The Vallejo in game is just some fantasy monstrosity invented by wg so you're not going to get a more logical answer

Very spicy time. Ship seems like dog and i would never get it. That being said just bought the Rio De Janeiro with coal and that was a fun ship. Is the horn is festive too! Superb in current bronse ranked.

All Ccs I have watched are given them during testing just like any other.
I think they get a "press account" with these ships. So it's not on their own accounts, they would have to buy it on their mains
this ship looks like it belongs in the coal section, not worth the steel unless you are down to the last ship or two in that category.

If someone brings a US CL with spotter instead of radar to a battle, everyone screams and rants because they could have brought radar instead. This ship is for people who want to retort that they had no radar to bring.

Let us stop with the "It's a T9 cruiser, shouldn't compare with Wooster". If Seattle had decent firing angles, it'd be a downright better ship. If Cleveland was a T9 with a heal, it would be a better ship.
Even Helena out-DPMs the Vallejo, might as well make her a T9 and give the heal, reload upgrade, unending spotter plane, and improved ballistics.

Calling it now, in a few months they will be moving this POS to coal when they realize nobody save a few unicums drowning in steel gets it (like MalteseKnight, who has over 100k steel as he said in his review).

As a Spanish speaker, I agree with Harper. However, having lived there and stationed there back in the 80's, everyone pronounced it Va Lay Ho. On a side note, we jokingly called it Valley Jo.

AA is irrelevant anymore since nobody can stop cv drops. Without hydro or radar I can't see getting this ship since it has no ability to push up and support dds. Rear line spamming holds no interest for me.
You're my favourite entertainment for WOWS. Must you join the tunnel visioned view of other CCs by dragging this ship through the dirt? It's name is not Worcester, it's a different design, it's T9 and has a clearly defined trait in the ballistics and lack of utility that defines it away from regular USN CLs. Let it be a ship in its own right for Gods sake. People can have their opinion but you can't base that on mere comparisons if Worcester is the "bar" you've unfairly set for Vallejo.
