    Original Lyrics:
    Early each day to the steps of Saint Paul's
    The little old bird woman comes
    In her own special way to the people she call,
    "Come, buy my bags full of crumbs;
    Come feed the little birds,
    Show them you care
    And you'll be glad if you do
    Their young ones are hungry
    Their nests are so bare
    All it takes is tuppence from you
    Feed the birds, tuppence a bag
    Tuppence, tuppence, tuppence a bag
    Feed the birds," that's what she cries
    While overhead, her birds fill the skies
    All around the cathedral the saints and apostles
    Look down as she sells her wares
    Although you can't see it,
    You know they are smiling
    Each time someone shows that he cares
    Though her words are simple and few
    Listen, listen, she's calling to you
    "Feed the birds, tuppence a bag
    Tuppence, tuppence, tuppence a bag"

    Rest in Peace Richard M. Sherman (6/12/1928 - 5/25/2024) 🍞 🕊️ 🪙 💼
    Now you’re finally reunited with your brother & music partner, Robert and your friend, Walt Disney.

    • @chriswybrew1740

      Walt's favourite song indeed so much so he asked the Sherman brothers to perform it for him at their concluding meeting each Friday long after they were all working on new projects. On first hearing them play it for his approval he told the brothers "That's what it's all about, isn't it?" So recalled Richard Sherman in a 2004 interview. Sherman called the song "a prayer for understanding - be kind, give love. It doesn't cost anything".

    When I was a kid I always thought this song was about feeding the birds, now as an adult, I realize that it’s more metaphorical. The writers meant for it to be about being charitable and humane, whether that means giving a little of yourself to others or helping an innocent animal or person when they’re in need. Such powerful lyrics and melody!! The best Disney song ever in my opinion!

      And although this song was sung to the children by Mary Poppins, Mr. Banks was the one that ultimately learned the lesson and had the biggest life changing moment.
      I think I recall Walt Disney stating that this was his favorite Disney movie song. I agree with both of you, and I'll add that not only are the lyrics poignant, but the music itself (melody, chord progression, dynamics) is amazingly powerful.

      I love how Mary Poppins manages to combine a heart-warming story with a deeper meaning and a lesson for old and young alike. In the end, Mary Poppins is not about Mr. Banks, representing all of us, who have lost the joy and light-heartedness of our youth, reminding us how important it is to keep the child in us alive and spread joy and happiness in a world that has become emotionally cold :)

    The bird lady in Mary Poppins was a veteran actress called Jane Darwell. Aged 84 at the time. She had been involved with over 100 movies in her career, won an oscar as 'best supporting actress' and even received a star on Hollywood boulevard.
    She died in 1967 at the age of 87.
    Every time I hear this song I can't help but think about her and feel sad. I also hope she finds it funny that after all of her years of hard work, she'll always be remembered as the bird lady.

      Adding on to this: she was Ma Joad in “The Grapes of Wrath”, acting alongside Henry Fonda. Darwell was basically in retirement at the time, living in an old folks home for actors/actresses in California. Walt Disney personally came to visit her, to offer her the role of the Bird Woman. She initially declined but eventually accepted. It was her final film role. She had been a film actress since 1914.
      (This was also Walt Disney’s favorite song.)

My morning walk took me through St Pauls Churchyard and around the side of the cathedral where the steps are where in Mary Poppins the old Edwardian lady sold her crumbs for 2d. Every time I passed those steps I thought of her and sang to myself - Feed the Birds. 😍

      Because the song asks us to do one simple thing which is so easy yet so commonly overlooked and not done enough and that is to simply be kind, to show just a little more love. We know it. But we just don't all do it enough.
      It's so simple, it may be in fact something so small... tuppence... yet something as small as a smile, a quick "are you okay?", a pat on the back or just being there for someone even if you don't know what to say... it's about the smallest things we can do for other people... that tuppence we afford for others can go a long way and change the world and lives for the better.

    • @chrisnorton4382
      @chrisnorton4382 Před 7 lety +7

      She was selling bags of crumbs to passers-by to feed the birds (tuppence a bag) - she was a street vendor, like match sellers in later times. Begging was illegal but selling small items wasn't, so people could give her money and she avoided prosecution for vagrancy. The song is about charity to those in need not about birds.

      Chris Norton I think the magic of Disney, is you can interpret these songs in any which way you choose. Their isn't a rule book of what the songs are about. They are about whatever you choose them to be about. Isn't the imagination a great thing?

    • @taylorb9484
      @taylorb9484 Před 7 lety +1

      Except that the song was clearly written with the scene in mind. Disney songs are, if anything, the type of songs LEAST open to interpretation as to what they're about. It is more accurate to say that Disney songs can be _reimagined_ in almost any way you choose. The intended meaning remains; the way you try to apply it can change.

    This performance of “Feed the Birds” is flawlessly sung by Marusia Louwence, one of the great voices of the last 10 years. At 33y she will hopefully be singing for a long time to come. The close, personal style of Julie Andrews was a perfect match for this song, and her version is dramatically great, but a studio version. Marusia knocks it ‘out of the park’ live in front of 10,000 people! A completely different demand than singing on a good day with 17 takes. Even Ms.Andrews would admit Marusia’s talents are of a different time and place. Julie Andrews is an icon of the 60”s, 70’s and 80’s. But her career was abridged, as the voice of an Angel was cut short by unneeded surgery. Imagine the world if ‘charity’ were the focus rather than war, money, greed, drugs and crime....

    Great song way back in 1964 all those years ago and still gets people crying when this song is sung. Can't beat the words to this song. Still sounds great even after all this time! Certainly gets my vote. Lovely!!

    Why is this such a powerful song?

    • @eduardo_corrochio
      @eduardo_corrochio Před 2 lety +1

      A few reasons, at least for me personally. First, it seems to be a metaphor that urges parents to give their children some attention; that's why Mary came to Cherrytree Lane, to bring this idea to Mr. Banks. Also, a lot of people have seen this movie early in their youth and that gives the film and its songs very powerful nostalgia-- hence, some of the crying in this video by audience members. Finally, even if you just take the tune out of its context from the movie it is still something beautiful and sweet that speaks to the heart. The Sherman Brothers made their masterpiece in this song.

      I admit, every time I see Mr. Banks walk through the streets of London to his bank towards the end of the film. I shed a tear.

      @@richardkinkead7823 I get a bit misty toward the ending when Mary is about to leave and her umbrella bird tells her she's no longer needed by this family, and she says "That's as it should be". Her job is done; the kids are no longer neglected.
      Mary Poppins is nearly a perfect musical family film. And it's Walt at the peak of his power and technical wizardry.

      @SamiDC Před 5 lety +85

      @@rileyhinds8616 That maybe a bit of an over simplification. Here's what I feel the underlying message is. It's a song encouraging people to be less selfish and more generous to those in need, to bringing out the compassion in people. In the film, you see the old bird woman who looks haggard and ragged and obviously impoverished. And yet, she's found a way to sustain herself while helping poor hungry little birds. So when you buy the feed from her, not only are you helping the birds, you're helping an old impoverished woman in need. It's a metaphor, one that tells us that having a compassionate heart and giving generously when you are able is one of the most rewarding parts of life. And, in this world, it's definitely something we need more of. Have a good one and peace out my dude. ✌
