The Moment Waves Broke a Laguna Beach Lifeguard Tower: Largest Waves in 50years?

- Back to back Bomb Cyclones send massive waves along the California Coast. I witnessed the most impressive waves I have seen in my lifetime of living in Laguna on January 6th. On January 5th we drove up to Santa Barbara in hopes to find some rideable waves. When we first set eyes on the ocean along our drive on the 101, we realized the swell and energy from the ocean was much more than we had imagined. We proceeded to spend the whole day in Santa Barbara at a break called Sand Spit. This is normally break that is very protected and blocked from most directions of swell but this time was different. In my previous experiences with this wave it has usually been in the 2-3ft range but if it was an exceptionally big swell you would be lucky to see some 6ft waves. On January 5th it was so big that people were using jet skis to get in to waves and to battle the crazy current that wraps around the harbor. Some of the largest sets i saw this evening were easily in the 10ft to maybe 12ft range. There was so much water flushing down the coast that it was not uncommon to see debris such a massive boulders, crab traps, or even the occasional stray surfboard wash through the lineup. When we first pulled in to the parking lot I listened to a much older fellow, probably double my age, say that this was the largest surf he had seen since the 80s and I am pretty sure he was making that assumption before the swell had reached its peak. While chasing the swell and finding waves during these types of storms can be an incredible experience, it is also important to be aware of the destruction these types of events can cause. Many communities along the coast were severely impacted by this swell. I think it is safe to say that not a single coastal community in California went without some damages. I am not a climate scientist but events like this do worry me for the future of our coastal communities and beaches. Climate scientists predict the west coast will continue to see more dramatic storms, like this, and accelerated erosion with climate change. Now is the time to support organizations responding to these impacts.

I had to tip y'all for this vid. I'll be 65 in 2 months, but I used to surf in high school (up to 1976) from Ventura Co. line down to Carlsbad. You all got me so stoked with this vid! Such awesome photos and drone footage! Loved and subscribed! 🤙
Thank you so much Sean! Hope all is well in Ventura for you these days. Looks like some of those rains caused some damages in you neck of the woods. We will keep an eye out for your comments in future videos. Really appreciate your support
I'm 62! New subscriber here too!
@@verlindaallen3335 when and where is the next big big swell gonna be?
@@veromeeker445 I'm not really sure .
@@SkidKids looked like a whole lot of fun, danger, and a lot of buoys too. Lol
In the late 60's into the 70's our family was blessed to have a second home in Laguna at the top of Brooks Street. My grandparents had one at Mountain and Catalina. My grandmother was the one who taught me to body surf/ride the waves in! What an incredible childhood growing up on those beaches. Houses long gone from us but not those amazing memories. I just found this channel today and subscribed. At the ripe old age of 60, I continue my love of riding the waves, little kid style, with my boogie board.😄 Looking forward to more videos!
Do you remember the A&W at Main Beach?
Loved reading your comment and story!
I grew up in a tiny studio on Pearl street overlooking the ocean .
Best place to grow up in the ocean in the best place.
I recently found family pics of Laguna in the 40's...melted my heart seeing the hills...as just hills
@@shannono8397stay SAFE BRAVE SOULS!!! 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
60 yrs young! 👍
MUCHO DINERO!!!
I live in Laguna from 1949 to 1968. I was 7 when we moved there. What a great place to grow up. Free diving for lobster and abalone. Surfing wherever we wanted to go. Most of the property on the ocean side of 101 was undeveloped in the 50s. I traded weed pulling and yard work to Hobie Alter for my first balsa wood surfboard when I was about 15. Sorry to say, it's too crowded and way too expensive now, but I do have great memories.
I grew up there in the 80's, but recently found family pics of Laguna and the beaches, I was so happy to see the hills as they were, with beaches with just natural plants with a few homes.
I loved reading your story, I have fond memories of getting abalone and we had a wall that we inlayed with our saved shells. Best best memories on those beaches. Your first board must have been so nice!
Damn man that’s crazy to even try to imagine. Before all the soccer moms with fake boobies… good old days I’m sure
I first saw Laguna Beach going on Sunday drives with my dad in the 50's. I got involved with the Art scene in the 60's and lived several places there in the 70s. It's still a Beautiful town, but when I was there you didn't need to be rich to have a cool place. Thanks for giving an old man some memory fodder. Many of my best times were spent right there. Happy New Year from the Thai jungle.
I lived in Corona del Mar for years, and showed my paintings at the Festival of Arts for several years. Love it there. My family and I go yearly to the Paegent of the Masters.
I'm no surfer but I live not too far from Mavericks in Half Moon Bay in Nor Cal. Some of the most TERRIFYING waves I've witnessed in my LIFE during the Cyclone. You guys are SAVAGES! Big Respect.
Insane how rough the ocean is after these storms. Just craziness going in.
Beautiful to watch
High quality production in every way - camera work, editing, music, etc., made for seriously pleasant viewing. Thank you! 🏄 ❤🙏
Just came across channel. I just had my 72 BD yesterday. Lived on Oahu in 60's learned surf there. Dude those waves are freaking brutal. Memories came flooding back. Thanks
wow 1 million. congrats Blair! Love the piano music during that insane Sand Spit session. That backwash rip was nasty!
I could watch big waves break forever. It’s wild how mesmerizing something so life threatening can be
That’s actually part of the appeal I think, I have spent many years working on boats and iv always loved hitting massive swells, always exciting, dangerous, fun, thrilling, death is a possibility, and it’s beautiful.
I grew up at southern California beaches with my brother and friends surfing 🏄♂️ so fun. I miss that.
NPB girl here! The Wedge is my backyard. Maybe I’ll see you guys up here soon! ❤️ That drone footage before & after of the shoreline is on point! Thx 4 that!
I’m not a surfer but I LOVE the surf, the bigger the waves the better. Thank you for sharing the majesty of the ocean.
Grew up on So Cal waves from 1981 - maybe 2008 and rode waves at most of the beaches you frequent in Orange County (I was a boogie boarder and a knee rider.) Living in Central Texas now and really far from the waves so I very much enjoy watching your vids because it brings back so many great memories. Many blessings to you as you continue to grow your channel and congratulations on being within striking distance of the big 1mm!! I'm absolutely confident you're gonna make it.
From Redondo here (born & raised) my brother loved to surf OC. He went to Vietnam so I'm a bit older.
I left Dana Point in 2008, moved out of state as well. Just recently returned after being gone for so long though I’m up in Redondo now. Feels good to be back
@@LeTrashPanda welcome home brother 🙏
Grew up in Tustin (Foothill Knights! ‘78), my childhood was on the beaches at Santa Monica, Will Rogers, spent all my high school summers in the water at Newport, CDM, Laguna, DP, Oceanside (is Olamendi’s still there?)… didn’t know how good we had it. I, too live in C. TX and miss those waters more and more. Thanks for the great video, those are some killer curls.
CA- the surfer bum capital of the world. I love it!
Just subscribed to help you hit 1 million! Awesome video!
Hwy 133 grew up in Laguna (The greeter days like way before)..! El Morro kindergarten class of 1969..! gnarly sets Cheers from Newport Beach, CA. 🌊🤙🏿
Loved watching the skim boarders at Mountain Road. All the boards were homemade out of plywood, and specifically remember a guy with an orange one who was there every weekend. Saw that sport first hand before I ever saw surfers. Love that skimboarding is still a thing!
Nice edit, narrative and music pairing. Well done. ✨
Great capture of the waves! Love Laguna forever.
Yes and so strangely true. All the love of our past favorite beaches, and each town we grew up in. And I too, love Laguna best. The snorkeling at Diver's Cove just North of the main beach.
The changes in SoCal from my days there in '76 - '82 are immense. And I am sure for those there before that even more so. But to see the wild sun bleached blonde cascading curls and the eager and simple love of the waves shows how nothing really changes our feelings and memories of this beautiful planet. Thank you Laguna Beach, and the "Divine Love" that creates such things! Laguna represents all that is purely heaven sent for me. So glad the American Surfer is still alive and well!
Great vid Skylar. Kinda epic that this mega swell hit in tandem with you hitting the big million. Hope everyone has come through unscathed and the next swell is even better. 🌊🌏☮️
1982/1983, the winter when the Huntington Beach Pier came down and PCH was covered with ten feet of sand. Gnarly.
Laguna Beach is 10 minutes from my house and we will go to watch the surfers when the waves get big & I ALWAYS get so scared for people in the water: it’s nice seeing you enjoy it it’s nice knowing there’s experienced people when I watch
It was going off biggest I’ve ever seen it and I’ve lived here my whole life 26 years thanks for not blowing it up by giving the name
Those are some waves. Amazing the way you? rode that, missing every head, body, and board, Just weaving in and out. I haven't been back home to Santa Cruz for so long, but it took me back to lighthouse point....similar but less palmtrees.. Loved it.
Wow! 1 MILLION subscribers! Congratulations! (just proud to be 1)
This is a hugely entertaining video! Smartly laidout & informative, too.
In my time connected with the California surf-line (coast), I've not seen any larger swells along our coastline (& I'm 75).
Everyone would do well to heed all warnings about increased storms & the potential for coastal and climate related damages.
Be safe. Have fun! Keep skimming!
I’ve driven down Laguna Canyon Road a few times. Beautiful drive!
I grew up in Laguna in the 80's & 90's , never seen a swell this big.
I do remember Aliso Pier, that was a great pier & was sad when it was lost.
Great video, wow...the editing and footage is so beautiful!
Blair and friends: You're about to hit 1 Million subscribers. I've been following this journey since you first started making content with Raw BEEFS and branched off to your own channel. Congrats on all the good karma that's lead you to this point. Much love from HB surfers...
Yeah, Blair's gonna hafta show us all the goodies he gets from CZcams when he hits 1 mil! There's quite a bit of prizes they send!
Way to keep it humble bro , your a gentleman and waterman 🤙🏽
Oh Wow!!
How much I miss Laguna!!!
Always found my way there for Happiness, Bliss, Love, Vibe, and the Oak St. Beach Taco Bell for worthy
Psychedelics, & etc. Substances. Not to mention the Sawdust Festival every July...
Used to thumb down from high school to do my homework
on Victoria Beach atop a large natural Divan rock, digging the then Auburn -coloured Sunsets. There was a castle on that beach, very Lichtenstein- like with turrets,
spires and such. So far out!!
Had a Really good buddy in the Canyon; Bumped into him years later in New Orleans, running under the Radar.
Ah! Sweet Youth!!!
My grandmother loved Laguna beach so much. She wanted a burial at sea/ashes in Laguna. Oh, the years we spent walking along its shores and wading in the water. The rock pools with all the starfish and sea urchen were plentiful. Thank you for sharing your video.
I am on the East Coast and grew up swimming in Long Island, New York waters. Always had to beware of the vicious riptides and undertows.
Living in Southern California, paradise on the beach...
Here in Florida that was a great skid kids,to get a first-hand look at the swell. That was probably one of the best examples This Old Man has had the pleasure to view yet,not to mention a great vibe just a great vibe.
As always, great content. And no, thank you for sharing your videos.
Epic scenes ! Never seen anything like it in my lifetime ! Thanks for taking us along with you !
Someone needs to be fired for letting a very portable lifeguard stand be washed away when they had a WEEK of warning and at least a day of it getting hit by waves. It could have been easily winched up to the top of those rocks.
really loved this edit! the music sequences were dreamy! great job!
Awesome!!!
Early congratulations on the upcoming milestone. The surf sequences were amazing.
Jet ski pull in was whimper. Cray cray they didn’t close the pier.
Always looking for any and all things surfing and I can’t believe this is the first time I’ve stumbled on your videos you should be doing what you love I’m so happy you’re able to do what you love young man! surf’s always up 🤙🏽🏄🏼♂️
Music was ruling in this one.
I’m from Santa Cruz and grew up on the 60’s. Your video was beautiful to watch and so comparable to what we just had. Went to Carmel the other day and they were HUGE there as well. Insanely huge. Thanks for the great footage. Stay safe. 🤗🌱
Almost 1 mil subs nice🎉
Great vid! Music, editing, footage. Thanks!
Great vid again ! Hope all is well with your family, I'm 65 yo and never seen the ocean like that. I don't know about the size of it. But it's for sure a once in a lifetime event. That lifeguard tower needed to be replaced anyway😳😝😝
Wow! That was amazing. Fun & scary.
Thank you.
Can I just admit how jealous I am of you guys; looks like such a rush!
Serious grindage bro
Homesick even more now, this is really great footage 🌊 thank you 🌊
That's normal beach weather here in the Northwest. lol. Hope Everyone had fun and safe.
Congrats on a million subscribers!
I jumped on when you were at about 1.5K. I new this channel was going to grow. Looking forward to many more successes. I love it when good things happen to good crew. Sending good vibes from Malta (in the Mediterranean).
Absolutely beautiful!!
What a scene! Lived in Oceanside since 1974 & that area for 30 years. Only Boogie Boarded in Oceanside & Carlsbad. Swam in Laguna & Huntington Beaches. WOW! God BLESS you 🙏
God’s beautiful creation!🙏❤️
Great video. You and your friends spent a great day which you will never forget, I sure.
Congrats on hitting 1million Smiley! Well deserved!
Amazing! I didn’t realize how lucky I am just 20’ from Laguna 😮beach.
Sandpit waves were sick during the storm love the channel your almost at 1 million subscribers that's a huge milestone on CZcams
Dude that wall has seen some stuff so kudos to it making it that far. As far as this swell goes, it's got NOTHING on 1987 (which that wall somehow made it through). I watched 20'+ waves breaking off Thalia and waves breaking OVER the Aliso Pier which was 35' high. This was a good one but it can go even bigger! Thanks for the beautiful video!
congrats on 1 million 👏
Looks like pretty rough surf to me. Never surfed; just tried to windsurf a lot. Looks amazing but on a calmer day.
Thanks for the video
Just subbed. OMGOODNESS!! Amazing footage!
Sick
Epic swell 🤙🏽
Awesome shots Scuyler
Amazing waves,
The photography is beautiful.
Amazing footage man, loved seeing the before and after comparison with the drone.
I live in Seattle so driving 3 hours to get skunked is a normal trip to me. But it makes you willing to go out and ride ANYTHING you can just to get something in . Many a time I've surfed piles of foam straight into the shore in 2ft of water . Makes the good days even better though .
Great video. Really nice drone comparison. Thanks!
Thanks Peggy! Glad you enjoyed those. I am going to try to do more of those in the future
Congrats on 1 million Blair
Loved the drone comparison 👌
Minus the destruction, it was a pretty good storm and your video is very relaxing!
Angry surf was mesmerizing, great video.
Great vid! Instant fave!
Nice to see the county’s full effort to keep the structures and debris from entering the ocean
I love my Laguna
Blair is the future of surfing. A million subs are only the beginning. Good call on taking it up to Sandspit, even though it wasn't the best.
Awesome ♡♡♡
So happy you’ll have 1 million subs. Been watching since you has 200k.
Thank you ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Пчёл тоже люблю ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Sickkkkk This is a great spot
Best yet. I loved seeing the shoreline in Laguna before and after the big swell. Incredible!
Sounds like Post Modern Jukebox music. Excellent!
GREAT VIDEO AND I REALLY LOVED THE MUSIC
My voice was as loud as the ROAR
WATCHING THIS 😮❤I am piptypive now & never saw this in our day bow
great footage of awesome powerful Mother Nature and surfers who love her!!!thanks!
Grrreeaat Video
Lived in Ohio most my life. Find this fascinating! Thanks for sharing!
Save the bees we need their pollination work on all our veggies.
I live behind Urth, right next to Heisler. Those bees have been there for a year. Great vid. Superb music.
Usually surf Thalia. Rock Pile was psycho.
Love the music 🎶 🎵 ❤️
with 30 years in the moive making biz and a back ground in film history...I will say one thing guy. You have a good eye for camera work and framing your shots VERY well and your edits are great!
Yewwwwww so good!!!
What a great idea to show the before after of the sand movement.
