My dad actually drove one of the cars in that commercial. Think he got paid $50 and a couple of those toys. Kenner is a Cincinnati based company most famous for the original Star Wars toys. Apparently, many other big toy companies laughed at the thought of movie toys and this little toy company in Cincinnati ended up making a fortune.
This commercial immediately takes me back to the early 70s when I was a kid, such a trip when you see/hear something that transports you back to a simple and innocent time in your life. Wow! I have two of these sets with all original cars and ramps including the boxes. The toys made by Kenner were well built and still work to this day! Toys were made to last. This is awesome stuff!! It was a lifetime ago but joyous nonetheless!
brought tears to my eyes. Feels just like it did the first time I saw the commercial. What an incredibly happy time those 70s were (the 50s and 60s too). Today it has all gone to shit. I've been getting more and more depressed with every decade that has gone by since then. I don't know how I am going to face another few decades the way the world is going today. The 70s was , to me, the last of the best times. Everything was better then - movies, sitcoms, weekly shows, the climate, food tasted better, people were happier, there was less crime, the cars were some of the best built ever in the 50s, 60s and 70s., families were a lot closer, etc, etc.
You remember the 50's and you are worried how you're gonna survive upcoming decades? Excuse me sir, but shouldn't you, like, be shopping for a coffin already..?
This was my favourite toy commercial from my childhood. I was mesmerized by smash up derby. Disappointed that my parents never bought this for me though... Thanks for posting this. So great.
Mine too! I am 52 and could sing all the words to this song. I distinctly remember riding my bike down a long hill by our house and singing this ad. Lol . I never had the toy either !
The toy came out in 1971 they had an updated version in 1973 and a bicentennial one in 1976 it was one of the best toys ever made. I had it and cherished it anybody who was lucky enough to have this toy knows what it was like to have it.
@@PetCactusA_HarmlessLittlePrick True but it's worth it if you want it bad enough. Also there are toys I got that I didn't know that existed at flea markets and antique malls . There is a place in Brooks Kentucky south of Louisville that us antique toy mall and it's fantastic.
I recieved Smash up derby for Christmas in 1971 when I was 7 years old, It was my father's last Christmas as he would pass the next year two days before Christmas in 1972.
My God,, i'm 57 and I had a set of these. For years I often walk around the house and sing the 'jingle' from this commercial. Today I thought of looking it up on YT and to my surprise here it is...... how cool!
My brother and I had the 1976 bicentennial edition of these cars. We used to send them down a long flight of hardwood stairs and launch them out the window from the second floor. While those cars were amazingly sturdy we did eventually crack the plastic.
Great toys of the past. I loved playing with this & the regular SSP racers. Had way more fun with these than sitting in front of computers all day. I've done both in my life, and what I wouldn't give to re-live the simpler days playing with those toys.
I saw this on tv when I was about 6. Had to have it. Got it for my birthday. I couldn't believe my eyes when I unwrapped it! (Being an upper, lower-class kid, unexpectedly receiving something that I really wanted, but thought I'd never have... you tend to cherish these moments. Anyhoo...) Right up until I discovered Star Trek (Yeah... I know.)... this was the coolest thing I had ever seen. I LOVED IT! Bestest present I ever got. "Comes with everything you see... right cheer." That, and a boxful of HotWheels... life was good.
I sing it all the time too. People just look at me strange, lol. They just dont get how much fun the 70's toys were and the commercials that advertized them
My 2 brothers and I had those, and we played with them all the time . A timeless toy that kids could use their imagination on how to and what to crash them into. The craptastic plastic of today would never take the abuse. Way too cool of a toy.
I got this set when I was a kid. I think I played with them every time the commercial aired. They eventually broke into pieces that wouldn't go back together. They sure were tough, though. The only childhood toys I have from that era are my tonkas. More steel than my new car.
Yeah, back in the 70's, I'm pretty sure ours wasn't the only family where 3 kids' screeching and tearing into a truckload of toys (no few of which we'd broken by noon), the need for ''some assembly required'', visiting relatives, and spilled food and drink culminated, by bedtime in a good tannin'. At least my father would ask us ''Do I need to take my belt off?'' a half dozen times before it actually went down. No harm done. And this was a great toy. We'd run them into our Evel Knievel stunt bike (in the house). 70's ruled.
Had the set, used to fly them off the ramp, they sure could fly. Crash them into things, parts would fly off, then put them back on. After awhile, the parts got damaged, after too mary crashes and the teeth on the t wore out after awhile. They were fun too play with, miss those cars, that's when you actually had toys that were fun to play with. Way better than hand held games, or cell phones, kids today don't know the meaning of real fun toys.
I had the ultra chrome set ute and vw beetle (released by toltoys in australia), Fond memories. (we had demo derbys on saturday nights on a dirt track speedway) Yeah, not a lot of string theory going on.
Holy wow ! i was looking these up today , when I was a kid there was nothing like the thrill of that mid air impact and all the pieces flying ( or ejecting ) off . I have a nephew who totally breaks things , but these are indestructable ( and breaking them is kinda the point ) What was retail when these were new ? I looked them up on ebay , fresh set in wrapper all the pieces , $500 . one car all the pieces and rip cord $200- $250 .Near full set in poor condition two cars , ripcords and minimal pieces , $150-$200 .
@odantoro Thanks for your response. The tears I shed over the cars I wrecked were caused purely by the capitalist in me, while the laughter over the wrecks was due to the sheer fun we had in our destructive little acts . . . having had time to think about it since my original comment, I would have to agree with you. We did have loads of fun.
My friends and I didn't waste our time with this - we used our Matchbox, Johnny Lightning and Hot Wheels cars instead! We called our stupid little contests "Car Wrestling" (after a concept we saw in an episode of "Speed Racer"). They took a long time to break, but when they did we laughed. Idiots that we were, we now look at the vintage cars we had and have to fight back tears at all the money we could have gotten for them had we kept them intact and sold them on eBay. God, were we stupid.

You are a liar! No way your dad could fit in one of those cars.
People will say anything for attention these days.
;-)
It’s interesting because many toy companies would do TV series tie-ins, probably counting on a multi-year run.
My dad WAS one of those cars. @@TomSteele93

One of my best Christmas presents ever growing up as a kid.
Same here but i coulda sworn I got mine in 72...oh, well...the parts flying everywhere and that whining engine really made my childhood!
Same here with me that was in the top 5 toys I got on Christmas
Same here!
I had this when I was about 8. The cars would crash into each other and the parts would fly all over the place. Good times!
I was 8 also.
And mom would yell: "Pick them all up, I'm tired of stepping on hard plastic pieces all over the place!!!"

this is the set I got for x-mas many many years ago, and still have.

I wish they would still make those. I'd buy a set for my son. It would give me a reason to play with them again. I loved those as a kid!
I loved the other ad that ended with "C'mon little Buggem, you can get it done. Smash, bang, crack 'em up. Smash Up Derby is fun!"

Those ramps also came in really handy for my Evel Knievel stunt cycle.

Yes, head-on collisions can be fun. Auto liability lawyer action figure sold separately.
We could put the Lawyer figure right in the middle of the ramp so he could get a close up view of the crash! JK LOL!!
Use Kenner's Oscar Goldman doll for the lawyer!
Hahahaha...Nice one
What a product. A toy that's supposed to break and leave the user happy about it.
Brilliant concept... destructive tendencies made fun

Playing Smash Up Derby with my brother while watching Killdozer on the Zenith console TV…..good times.
Great toy. I was never inside playing...
I still have mine, with all the pieces, but not the rip cords. I was 8 in 1973.
