“As iron sharpens iron, one man sharpens another man.” Prob. 27:17. Sincere thanks for all the sharpening I have received from you. I think the thing I respect most is your humbleness; it’s a rare trait for these strange times in which we live.

This shows the strength of a man who can step outside of his skill set and do a task that ...."is no big deal" Mike H... Then invited a friend with that skill set to demonstrate what really needs to be done.... Mike again you show yourself to be a true tradesman and a great person... God Bless

When I was an undergrad in geology I took a class that had a field trip to an old cemetery with limestone headstones. The professor explained how the erosion rate for the locally sourced rock could be easily measured with the dated stones. Your video reminded me of this.

While it is possible to carve a date or a few letters in soft stone for the past hundred plus years pneumatic tools and sandblasting has been used to carve lettering on gravestones and monuments. When you need to add a date to a gravestone, a rubbing just as you did is taken to copy the style of the lettering IF you don't have the stencils in the same font to lay out your own. A piece of rubber is glued to the face of the stone and the new lettering is transferred over to the rubber. Then the lettering to be added is cut out with a sharp knife. The letters are then cut using grit blasting. Holding the gun at an angle lets you carve the sloped V-shaped profile of the letter in the stone. The same can be done when carving flowers or logos into stone. Using a technique similar to silk screening where you uncover different areas to blast them then replace the cutouts to protect that area during the next blasting session.
Your process will work well for making a cornerstone for a DIY project or to add a personal touch to ones home.

Hi Mike, the way you adjusted the spacing of the 1 is a process they call Kerning in the print / design world - its "the process of adjusting the spacing between characters to achieve a visually pleasing result". Fun to see it in one of your videos, does show design happens everywhere.

As you know most lettering is done by sandblasting, CNC or insomar machine but you can't beat hand cut. One tip Mike, you might like to invest in a Vitrex VITGO200VT grout removal tool, very cheap but is perfect for small lettering with its hammer action tungsten tip. As always excellent presentation and Happy New Year to you.
