    I agree with the Jeff Gordon pick for Hendrick. JG turned Hendrick into a powerhouse, brought on and mentored Jimmie Johnson (this doesn't take away from JJ's achievements), and is still a part of the team today. He was Hendrick's biggest star: he brought a lot of new fans to Nascar and was known outside of Nascar more than most drivers. He also got the fattest paycheck of any Nascar driver, which might say something about his importance.

    I think for Penske Brad Keselowski or Joey Logano could be argued to be better. Keselowski had 34 wins and Penske's first championship in 2012, and Logano currently has 30 wins and 2 championships. Of them, Keselowski I believe was even more important than Rusty Wallace because he came in, completely revitalized the team, brought them a title, and made them a top-flight team.

    Denny Hamlin will be in the conversation of best driver never to win a championship if he never gets a title before he retires. as he has 51 wins to Martin's 40, and he's still active. No point in saying anymore in case he wins a title before hanging it up,
    As for Hendrick, I have to lean toward Jimmie Johnson. 7 titles with FIVE IN A ROW. 'Nuff said.

He’s clearly the top-dog at HMS currently, had that dominant 2021, and finished 2nd this past year. 3 seasons in, the worst he’s finished in the point I believe is 9th in 2022, and I don’t see him slowing down anytime soon. If he can rattle off 3-5 wins a season for the next 10 years (assuming he stays at HMS) and can pick up another title or two, I’d imagine he’d have to be in the conversation, right?

    Under Winston cup system Gordon would’ve had 7 and Jimmie would’ve had 4. The Winston Cup system rewarded consistency throughout the entire season whereas the playoffs/chase definitely favored the end of the season. They’re both definitely great drivers, but IMO over Gordon’s career he was more consistent and just better than Jimmie. Having the 3rd most race wins ever is no laughing matter! Especially with the fierce competition Gordon was up against! They’re both phenomenal, but in my heart I know Gordon was better

    Kia credit whenever you consider how the point systems changed that if you analyze how Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt won their championships that Jeff Gordon also would’ve won seven championships under that format, and Jimmy Johnson would not have nearly as many that I think it’s really fair to say that Jeff Gordon is the best driver ever from Hendrick

    • @davemall1
      @davemall1 Před 6 měsíci

      You can't analyze the drivers using different points systems. It's apples and oranges. If I put the shoe on the other foot and applied the Chase format to yesterdays drivers, for the most part they wouldn't have as many championships as the have now. I have actually done that before to prove a point. My results are lost in some CZcams comment section, but nearly every great driver had fewer championships...not because they are less talented at the Chase format, it was because the old format didn't require them to practically win the last race of the season after going through an elimination format...it was because the rules were different. So just like you cant judge yesterdays drivers by todays rules, you can't apply yesterdays rules to todays drivers.
      There is no proof that Gordon would have won 7 titles. There is some evidence that Johnson would have done just fine in the old format, because he did, in 2002 he finished 5th and 2003 he finished 2nd...ahead of Gordon. In 2004 I would argue that Jimmie would have won his first championship if not for the Chase format being implemented. Jimmie had the best stats of any driver that year by far, but Kurt Busch won. New rules require new race strategy.

The killer instinct was definitely still in him though as was shown in the 2019 Roval race.
