Good video! Having played OG Sleeping gods, Distant Skies and Primeval peril, i agree with your points. One thing i will point out with Primeval Peril is that you can play it in one sitting. Yes, more game is usually better, but our Distant Skies campaign was 20 hours long (and it could have been longer if we wanted). More over, as you pointed out, it's not possible to see everything in a first play of Primeval Peril. There's much much more that you can explore and do in multiple play throughs. I would say if you played OG sleeping gods, then Distant Skies is obviously what you want to jump into, but I would honestly recommend Primeval Peril to someone who wasnt sure about getting into such a large game.

Great video! Sleeping Gods still hasn’t interested me enough to buy it but if I do I think I’d go with the cheaper & shorter option!

@@Neon_Gorilla The only one I've played is Arkham Horror the card game, which I do like a bit. I enjoy the deck construction of it and I find the Lovecraft theme to be really interesting!
yeah I tend to stay away from narrative stuff myself, never wanted to dip my toe into the Arkham rabbit hole. I already have two giant boxes full of marvel champions I don't play.
@@Neon_Gorilla I got into it when I was playing lots of solo games and went through 3.5 of the campaigns. But I haven't played solo in a while and haven't played Arkham horror in around a year now.
The Arkham Horror card game is a great mesh of game mechanics and narrative. If the Neon Gorilla ever wants to go down that rabbit hole, I'm happy to help, I have almost everything released for it, all blinged out.
Good comparison. I think you undersold the narrative in the first part of the video. Yes, it's not as deep or fleshed out as the bigger ones, but it has an actual story, and the path you take let's you experience it differently with multiple plays. Most narrative games are very linear, there are surprisingly few which can be replayed without already knowing what the story is going to be.
Maybe you are right, I was not invested at all in the story on this first pass though, just my experience. I will say this was a similar critique of distant skies and the second play remedied that. With PP though I felt even less connection to the narrative hence the take. I actually don't see that as a negative though. I enjoy the actual "gameplay" and don't mind that I did not come across any interesting narrative decisions. There was one that led to something but it was very linear and short-lived. Which once again is the design as the time economy felt way tighter. I simply had no time to explore. Every action I made was in pursuit of blood flowers. I am interested in exploring it further but I wonder if the time is better spend exploring distant skies further.
@@Neon_Gorilla if you have both, I don't see any real reason to go back to primeval peril, unless you want to play with someone else who isn't looking for a larger campaign. The story is definitely on another level with Distant Skies (and the original).
I view games like PP, Paleo, Legends of Andor and Oltréé, and even Card Kingdoms of Valeria: Darksworn as games I'm happy to return to year after year, so IF I'd tap out after 20 hours of play, I'd KNOW there would be another 20 hours or so, a year or two later...
So the question reduces to: do you want a game that might take an evening to play, or one that might take a weekend or more to play...
I genuinely think the answer for me is: both.
well distant skies serves both since you can save it but you don't get that finality that you would with primeval peril.
@@Neon_Gorilla I'd forgotten the save system: half our dining room table is devoted to SG:DS!
The save system concept doesn't really appeal to me, here: I always want to go back for that extra bite!
BTW, DS is our first foray into SG games, and big box Lauket games in general, so I can't speak for approaching PP first. Have you had any good feedback/ answers to your question at the end of the vid?
I think many say the streamlining of the ship upkeep and battle greatly helped DS be much smoother so I am not really interested to go back at this point. I do hear the story in the Original might be better
Primeval Peril is actually the Sleeping Gods I've been interested in. The awkward thing is that isn't that much cheaper than the original where I am (30€ vs 65€). The original probably is the better value
That seems awfully cheap for the original. Price aside the question is if you want a 15 hour sprawling narrative adventure or a 2- 4 hour sprint

well to be fair it is meant to be played 4-6 times and if you like the system I think at least 3 is reasonable. Worst case is 5 an hour....I have had much worse return on investment :)
