  • A Trip up a very popular mountain in the Arrochar Alps - Beinn Narnain, and how mistakes were made on prior trips to the same area. If anything experience may make you wiser and you learn more from your mistakes than your success's - something I certainly did many moons previously on my first few trips up Beinn Narnain.....

    Narnain was my 1st on March 25 2017 on a glorious blue sky late winter/early spring day right up the Spearhead thanks to my brother's penchant for doing things the less easy way. Got halfway up and thought this is for me. Thanks for the advice on making mistakes. I made a navigation error on a Corbett on Mull recently. Felt daft and a bit mortified. Learned the lesson about why it happened and will make sure I don't do that again. One of our group helped me immensely by saying even the most experienced folk get temporarily misplaced at least once a year.

    Gosh, your story of the thunderstorm really evoked how terrified I was on top of The Cobbler in a thunderstorm. Had kind of resigned myself to getting struck by lightening - as I was tied to the top of it and my climbing partner was stuck - and just felt like a bit of a numpty. As you said Murray: lesson learned, I definitely don't want to repeat that experience!

    I’m loving these vlogs Murray. The way you describe the weather is brilliant, you only ever hear a Scot say “claggy” and I know exactly what you mean!! I had a good walk to Ben Ime from The Cobbler a few years ago, I got to the summit and it was shrouded in cloud but I decided to stay and have my lunch, just as I finished, the clouds cleared and rewarded me with some amazing views. Sadly, I don’t work in Glasgow as much as I used to and don’t get a chance to enjoy the mountains as much as I’d like. Your films are replaying some amazing memories though, thank you.

    Great trip Murray. You reminded me of a couple of misguided routes Ive done too, even as a qualified mountain instructor !. One rushed solo trip included dropping the wrong side off Sgurr na Lapaich in Affric looking for Loch Mullardoch when I was actually in Glen Strathfarrar. Couldnt work out where the loch had gone. wot a muppet, but as you say, good lesson learnt.

    Beinn Narnain was my second one back in 21 and had the exact same conditions as you, claggy and nothing to see. Of course I done it via the Narnain boulders and followed the crowds as you do as a beginner. Liking the trousers you wear, I got in touch with RVRC and ordered the exact same colour and the red and black ones today in fact as I was really impressed with the quality of the baselayers I ordered last year. Great company and decent gear. Looking forward to the new season, climbing Cairngorm and Ben Macdui next weekend which will be my 50th! All the best Murray and I look forward to your next one as always. Cheers

    When my wife and I first met 22 years ago, we bought Cameron McNeish's munro book and off we went. Narnain was one of the first. We set off late in a winters day, and worried about darkness took a right at the boulders to climb the face rather than go round the back and up the path. It was so steep and slippy I had mud and grass in my fingernails! I hate heights, and will never forget that climb! 😂

    I haven't been on Narnian since the late 1980s, and can't remember much apert from forest, drizzle and midges!
    Was it Napoleon who is supposed to have said "we learn more from losing hard battles than winning easy ones"? That sums up my attitude to making mistakes on hills. I remember the days of desperately trying to keep the map dry while even more desperately trying to remember what I read about the route in a Munro coffee table book the night before! Loved this for loads of reasons, Murray. 1) About 20 odd years ago I was one of several leaders taking our scout group up the Cobbler on a sunny day. Eventually we said 'wow that's a busy mountain over there!': oh yes we had taken the wrong turn and did Narnain instead! (the association has wisely brought in safety legislation since then!). 2) Farther back in the 70s a mate and I had stayed in the youth hostel at Ardgarten and tried to do the Cobbler but I don't think we ever hit the good path, got caught out by darkness and snow falling and knee deep in snow at one point. Clueless! 3) That first boulder you sat on was where our group stopped for lunch a few years ago.I painted that same view down the loch when it was clearer (and not mirror imaged, lol) and has our members dotted about in the foreground. PS I only ever got up the Cobbler a couple of years ago -and threaded the needle!! I can now die happy, lol! Thanks a million. Atb...Terry

      I know the feeling - trying to keep the balance right is very tricky TBH :( in terms of thunderstorms - I reckon I probably did leave a stain somewhere !!lol

    I thought the concrete blocks were bases for some sort of cable car to do with mining 🤔
    Think I read it on walk highlands when planning the route, I went up that same way.
    Good luck 🍀

      They're the bases of the aerial ropeway that was used to build the hydro scheme

    Used to be a hillwalker, had a few hilleberg tents from the Akto to Tarra. Coming to the hills in a car that you can run back to if the weather gets bad is let me see.......ah yes cheating.

    In NZ we have Hut Bagging, we have about 950 huts dotted around the back country and a few folk have made it to them all! May I ask why you double pat the Munro peak? I've seen others do this too, tradition? 😊

    • @ScotlandsMountains
      @ScotlandsMountains  Před 8 měsíci

      Ah , no particular reason for the double pat , just like welcoming an old friend I suppose lol

    You wear the yellow rr jacket alot and it looks nice and lightweight, can you remember what its called and is it waterproof

    • @ScotlandsMountains
      @ScotlandsMountains  Před 8 měsíci +1

      Hi Phil , cannot remember the name off the op of my head , but it is not waterproof, just a nice outer shell, i like the bright colours and try and keep the kit as bright as possible for numerous reasons (I’ll see if i can find the name of the jacket when i am home later)

    We love your videos and all your efforts to make them 🥰
    However, we hated the mirrored/ image flips. So disorientating. We had to stop watching.
    Please, no mirrored shots in the future. You're way better than that 😉😇
