Hahaha lemme say this.... I went for an interview at around 22 years for the promotion jobs and guess who was my interviewer? Just Ivy! This woman is tough! (I'm not complaining) We were a group of like 10 ladies and we all failed!! We went again for a different interview which Ivy was still the boss...I got the job,got to work with her and it was the best experience. Trust me since then she became one of the women I look upto...that's way kitambo even before Over 25...

I am a HR.... and I felt the attack by Julia 😂
About the CV, here is a standard format:
    1. Contact info-name, email, and mobile
    2. Personal profile- market yourself in a paragraph
    3. Skill- both hard and soft
    4. Work experience-( focus on achievement more than a whole hundreds list of responsibilities)
    5. Education
    6. Additional info
    7. Rerences
NB: No one has time to read a lot of stories on over 100 CVs sent for a single post, because unfortunately thats how it is, so many unemployed people, one job receives hundreds of applications. An ATS software is mostly used to track keywords relevant to a job. So customise your Cv based on the job you are applying.
    Thanks

@@emmamwanza2138 on work experience.. Try to indicate what you achieved in your previous position, that is if you are not a fresh graduate. By achievement it would be something like a contribution that led to better performance, an innovation, an improvement, meeting goals, etc. For example, a customer care personel could state "I developed and implemented a customer satisfaction survey tool that helped the company to measure the extent of customer satisafaction." That is a just an example.....

I hold the HR office at my firm and I have interviewed quite a number of people. My advice on CVs is send your resume in PDF opposed to word. My take is that it's a lot like a proposal where you don't want the recipient to change aspects of your work and it is simpler to be cautious in PDF than word
In interviews I would say that most people don't respond to sad stories. Don't lean on pity for the hire. Don't cry, don't give your life story, just work with your credentials and have them rep you. So many girls cry in interviews and I think it is not the most charming way to get hired.

I remember in my early work years I had to quickly learn to manouvre those sexual harassment stories. I basically acted a fool and pretended I didn't get when a guy was hitting on me. I ended up being called naive and clueless and also 'virgin Mary'. But that was my mechanism, nowadays I am very clear to steer conversation towards business so guys just leave you alone.
On the sisterhood front, yo! I get that Bravado thing, I remember once I just asked my Manager what exactly the issue is because I got tired of trying to figure out why I made her so mad. And she didn't have anything of value to say and I pissed her off more for being straight up. To the point I was taken to Hr but when I asked what the exact issue is so that I can rectify, she also couldn't pinpoint it. So basically just be you, don't let anyone intimidate you. Do your job, be a team player with colleagues and maintain high performance. Watanuna, watachoka.

One thing they don't teach about CVs is that there is no such thing as one size fits all. You have to cater your CV to the job and/company you are applying for.
For some, the emphasis is your education, others it's your experience, etc. You NEED to research the organization and know which one they are more interested in.
And how to sell your experience when you are younger - that attachment, that side hustle, that holiday job you went to, the hawking you do, etc. There are so many soft skills you master there, but you see CVs and someone just doesn't capitalize on the soft skill learnt on those odd jobs.
Experience does not mean white-collar job experience only.

The investment industry has come a long way, back then the MMF and other liquid investments had a minimum investment amount of like Kes 1m which later changed to Kes 100k, then Kes 1k then today most do like Kes. 500 bob. This was mainly coz of the limited amount of fund managers in the country so with every new entry we got more flexible requirements coz every new player needed a market share as they joined the industry. Similar to banking and loans, new players in the market meant new ways of doing stuff. Imagine how high end banking was before Equity.

Remember you’re also interviewing the company! The other side of the picture is maybe you don’t want to work for people who don’t focus on your results or have a culture that’s very far from your values and beliefs. A good hiring manager knows that the best talents are also interviewing them.

SALT was a church ministry for youth main ly in college and in Uni and since the church was inside UON it meant 99% of the guys were in UON. Anyhu so the last year we'd have different courses by the alumni who left SALT come prepare us for the job market. We'd do like a 3 month course on CV writing, we'd do dummy interviews (proper coz the alumni were senior managers in their line of work). We'd also do courses and case studies from the alumni entrepreneurs etc. This really helped me out. The one thing i wish i was prepared for is something similar to ponyoka na fresher. We had events in school (1st month) then 3rd years would come intentionally to date or have a one night stand with freshmen. People should know that most work places are similar and prey on the freshest thing in the office.

What I have learned over the years is the difference between a CV and a Resume. First question is what does the job posting say, if you are asked for a CV provide a CV, if the job asked for a Resume provide a resume. A CV is expected to be long presents a full history of your academic credentials, so the length of the document is variable. On the other hand, a resume presents a concise picture of your skills and qualifications for a specific position, so length tends to be shorter (one page is best practice) and dictated by years of experience

I live in Sweden and one of the main things that make me want to stay here is the feeling of safety as a woman. Consent is non-negotiable even for things that one may not think about. For ex, at work it's common for even bosses to say sth like 'Is it okay for you to do abdc... Or... You can check on that report if you like'. The toxic patriarchy in most developing countries is so normalised and I think that is why we never really move forward. I really hope one day we will move past this. One thing I know for sure though is that in most countries where women feel safe, the government has a framework where women can report harassment and immediate action is taken. Truth is, if men are left to their own devices without accountability or consequences they will do literally anything and get away with it.

A CV should contain at least 5-7 roles and responsibilities per role you have held or at least a brief description of the activities you do/have done at the role, remove ID number, gender, marital status, tribe and all these bio data. Your cv and cover letter should be relevant to the job you are applying for and have achievements like Julia said. Save as pdf with your last name then first name.
Before an interview, do market research to help in negotiating the salary. Do research on how to answer questions like strengths, weaknesses, motivation to work at the company and this can be found in the job description of the role.
Be as calm as possible and view the job as a conversation because that is all it is.

I think this is the most empowering episode from you. It just opened my eyes on things that I have experienced or seen other people go through in the work environment, rn I can look back and think "..omg, that was sexual harassment'' and I had no idea at that point in time. Another frustrating category are the ones who think they can order you around in the workplace and you cant say anything coz of "Respect for Elders", wtf. I remember this one time a colleague of mine who is even younger than me thought that it was okay, and I had to explain to her why it is not okay coz your opinions matter and how other people treat you and make you feel also matters.

Public Speaking, Project Management, Negotiation, Conflict Resolution, Software development, Accounting, Financial planning, Critical thinking, How to mentor, Business plan Dev, People management and Customer service. These are some of things that our high school curriculum lacks. If we have such reforms in our curriculum a majority of high school graduates will be finishing high school and they can start working while studying in campus.

I'm in HR. This was a good topic other than the stereotype that female bosses are bad.
One or two women judged them (especially Lornzie's point) and they made it an "all women thing" but when one or two men sexually harrased them they judged them as individuals..... This is a societal problem that's extended to the workplace and needs to stop! Like Ivy said, there bad female bosses and good female bosses ditto to men. Speaking from experience as well....
Also, some men will send women to tell other younger women they need to dress more decently or give any other feedback and make it a women problem.....not all you see meets the eye.
Don't forget you're women as well, are you saying you're /will make bad bosses because of the fact?
On C.V.s, find a sweet middle ground, avoid personal details (and photos unless requested) as they can be used as grounds for bias; lessen the description of the job (only key points); and have key achievements listed as succinct points (unlike my post hehe). Don't have long repetitive sentences; list your referees, *don't write* available on request.
Also make the CV visually appealing and not too crowded, google various formats. And don't make it long, for entry positions, max two pages!
A CV should be unique just like you're a unique individual, there's no all fits one formula.
      All the best!

I once applied for an internship and had to go through *FOUR 1-HOUR INTERVIEWS* which were extremely hard, consisting of technical + behavioral aspects. + I’ve never attended an interview that was shorter than an hour (unless it was the final one kabisa)
Maybe Jules was favoured coz of her UK education background - which companies do a lot sadly

      1. Research the company. Most companies have websites. Visit them and understand what they do, the products/services they offer
      2. If it’s an international company, you’ll probably find interview formats on google or YT. Just search for example “Deloitte Interview structure”. You’ll get insight into the types of interviews they conduct. Could be purely technical or a mix of technical and behavioral. Also on the technical part, some companies have certain types of questions they ask, so that google search may help you
      3. Read the job description and think of ways you can demonstrate those skills even from school experience. Again, YT can help greatly with this. Just search “how to demonstrate experience as a fresh graduate” or something like that
      4. It would help if you could find someone who already works in the said company and ask for some guidance. LinkedIn is a great place to reach out to people if you don’t have their contacts or don’t know them that well
