    My sister was killed a month ago. I cannot find words to describe the grief. My mate sent me an email 2 weeks ago and today I realised there was an attachment with it. It was a link to Julie Fowlis' "O Sister" You Tube clip. I've just been sitting here mesmerised by this woman's beautiful voice and music in song after song. It is truly music for the spirit and soul. All I can say is thank you so very much.

      I grew up on KISS.. was a total 80's hair band freak...then God in His infinite mercy crossed my path with the venerable Irish fusion group IONA.. and then it just branched out from there to where I can honestly say if I were on a deserted island with a jukebox capable of playing one genre of music, without a doubt it would be in the Celtic vein...
      I still get a "fix" now & then with Yes, Styx, heck even KISS once in a great while...but putting on stuff like Julies music, feels like a cleansing of sorts, and my soul then breathes again..

    I almost don't know what to say... my late father was from Milovaig (Mìlolabhaig) in Skye... a proud Gàidhlig speaker and excellent piper.... my parents moved to New Zealand in the early 50's.... so I never appreciated his enthusiasm until now... which is too late to share with him .... I've started my Gàidhlig journey just now and your music Julie (which I discovered several years ago) digs deep into my soul and being ... dad would have adored your music and I feel grateful that you have shared your talent and beautiful voice and music with us....to keep our heritage alive.... this song is absolutely a realization to me of the power of where I came from.... and a beautiful collection of senses of the spirit of Scotland.... thank you so much !

      Congratulations. You are blessed with a virtue that can lead you to an understanding that few people have. My extracurricular studies have revealed some very, very, VERY interesting historical facts - namely the intrinsic connection between languages we know as "Gaelic", "Old English", "Saxon", "Old / High German" - and - ( are you sitting down? ).......ancient Hebrew. !!!!!! I know! Super - WOW !!!
      Even the way traditional Celtic, Gallation and Phoenetian language from long, long ago ( "phonetic", yes Sir - there you are... ) resembles in some remarkable ways to ancient languages of what novices like me have been taught are the "first peoples of the Americas".
      Case in point: ( this should really rock you ) a priest / ambassador from a recent Roman Emperical period was tasked with searching out communities in what is now known as "Northern Europe, The British Islands and the Scandinavian Peninsula". As his journey progressed his reports back to Rome held a growing number of key bits of information. Namely, often, written language and codex type symbols that in a remarkably similar way to ancient hebraic language - articulated the "Names ( characteristics ) of THE CREATOR".
      About 1000 years later....the apparent "new-comers" to the Americas discoverd remarkable similarities between "aboriginal people" and the ancient knowledge of "The Name of GOD". On stone tablets, etched on stone walls of caves, in ancient sites where "worship of The CREATOR SPIRIT" was conducted, etc, etc.
      Summary: the modern "English Language" is the direct decendance of the language spoken by the Father of Abraham, Issac and Jacob.....
      So.....in song how are we governed? Answer: by our spirit, our feelings, our interpretation, as it were. If our minds and hearts are on the "things of GOD", the we will not only imagine how beautiful the language spoken in Heaven will be like - but also how connected all people today - known as to some: "The English-Speaking Nations of The West".
      There is a very real and 'good' reason why a certain kind of music resonates with certain people. Imagine how beautiful King David's music might have been - with his immense faith and the immense Grace he received from GOD. Imagine the most humbling and mesmerizing voices of modern / traditional Celtic / Gaelic music voice talents - singing King David's Psalms.......
      there would be "rock music" all right. Songs that would truly "move mountains".
      Seek The TRUTH in all things. Pass The Word. Our words - matter. Each of us - matter.
      Station.

    A selection of verses from an old traditional song, the lament of an each-uisge whose human lover has deserted him, leaving him with a child he doesn't know how to look after (and probably couldn't look after even if he did know how). (Generally an each-uisge in the old stories would be a dangerous monster, but in this song he's a deserted lover).

    though it was coldly that she nursed him

    The darling child3 of my song,
    The darling child of my song
    was beside a hillock
    without fire, without protection, without shelter.
    Hill ò va hò
    Hill ò va hò.
    Mòr4, my love,
    Mòr, my love,
    return to your little son

    I'll be 62 last week. I've spent at least half my life travelling the world just to go and be amazed at the sights. Just to live amongst them, if you know what I mean. But I love this sound of home. It's he sound of an angel singing out of adversity. You can't eat the scenery as the saying goes. But you can look at it through a soft lens while you drink the edges away..It's the heritage

    Melody is what connects people. The sound and the specific vibration levels, words just add meaning to the melody. That's why we cry when listening to a tune we have no idea what's it actually about. I've experienced it so many times with Gaelic songs, Chinese songs, Mongolian, Slavic... Cultures that have a rich history of folk music. One might say it's in our collective mind. However, you want to understand it, it exists and its unique and i wish we had more of it in this world. Not everyone is open to these emotions, maybe even most people aren't. So much sadness in the world, anger, resentfulness... It'll all be ok once we're gone... Thanks for the lovely song. Peace V

Several nights we slept in abandoned crofts, with deceased people's belongings strewn around - which we treated with great respect. And now there is a big cultural regeneration, people moving back & able to work via the internet. Wonderful. Return visit long overdue.

      I think that Julie Fowlis is herself from South Uist. I know very little of South Uist but somewhat more than nothing of North Uist. In Google or some such search engine, type in "Land Raids, North Uist." Also go to Julie Fowlis's rendition of An Eala Bahn (Bhan) on You Tube. Get the Gaelic spelling of its author and then do a Google search for that name. It translates into "McDonald." These are fascinating pieces of history and all interweave together.

      Theo N de Bray, I researched the Hector but was only able to find a brief outline of one of her voyages. Out of 186 or so emigrants, a dozen and a half died of pestilence in a stormy eleven-week passage Nova Scotia. The promise of year's provisions was reneged upon, and the people starved their first winter, but it did not say what came of them after that. There is now a fairly large organisation of their descendants in Canada. In the historical context, I have no cause to believe that the voyage was remarkable except that it was so typical of ill treatment accorded dispossessed highlanders.

    • @theondebray
      @theondebray Před 4 lety +1

      @@Quentin217 Feis Rois, the travelling music school in Scotland, did a performance of 'The Voyage of the Hector', very moving without being sentimental or twee, which is how I came to know about this terrible tale. Nearly a quarter of the passengers & crew died of starvation, dysentery, unknown diseases, mothers throwing dead babies overboard; they were within sight of land, Nova Scotia when they were driven back far out to sea by a big storm. When they eventually got to land, promised to be open & fertile, they found forested wilderness - and if you know that part of the world, you will know how bleak that is. Feis Rois musicians & composers based their work on records from that part of the world, and some of them descended from relatives of those families, which added considerable poignancy to their performance. I would be interested to know more about the organisation of their descendants.So much history, so much music.

    • @Quentin217
      @Quentin217 Před 4 lety +2

      @@theondebray Go to www.shiphectordescendants.ca/. The closest I ever got to Nova Scotia was landing at Goose Bay, Labrador in early September, 1984 on a military transport plane. It was a damp, penetrating kind of cold. I was lucky to have one of the few window seats on board. I saw dense, lush forest with many ponds, probably breeding mosquitoes. It looked like moose country to me.
      The story that I read was from Wikipedia. That is not always completely accurate as anyone can write anything on it. Of course, an entertainment script is not always accurate either. Here in my country we have Hollywood. It is a complete dreamland in which historical truth is mostly irrelevant. Hollywood's very heavy leftist political bent and artistic licence take precedence. Anyway, I shall definitely research the Hector further.
      In God's creation, nothing ever happens in a vacuum. Everything has a cause or usually several, and everything that happens is a cause of events yet for to come. It is very complex. In my mind, I date the Highland Clearances back to April of 1746 with the aftermath of Culloden. The combat deaths, the hangings, and the deportations arising from that defeat were the start of not only the Clearances but also the impetus for numerous repressive and brutally enforced statutes that further broke the power and organisation of the highland clans and rendered their chieftains into lairds. Then came the breeding of a breed of sheep that could withstand the highland winters. The sheep profits were mathematically compared to the crofter rents, and it was generally decided that the lesser sum of money must give way to the greater.. The lairds by then were under the protection of the Crown, so there was no longer any need for a militia of armed men. Basically it was a case of deliberate social engineering.
      I have read that there is a movement in Scotland today for to try to restore the highlands ecologically to what they had been in former times before the Clearances. Where it has been tried, it has met with much success. Deer and sheep were fenced out and native plants were brought in. Forests are returning to the lands that are thus protected. With them gradually came increased numbers of the native birds. I hope that such will continue.

    Dh’èirich mi moch,
    dh’èirich mi moch,
    B’fheàrr nach d’ dh’èirich
    Mo chreach lèir na chuir a-mach mi.

    Bha ceò sa bheinn,

    Bheir mi dhut fìon,

    ‘S gach nì a b’ ait leat,
    Ach nach èirinn leat sa mhadainn,

    ’Nighean nan gamhna,
