- In this video, I head out to Triple Falls on Vancouver Island to make photographs with only one focal length. Unfortunately, the conditions are so good that I end up using my video camera, the Fujifilm X-S20, instead, since it has a focal length that is ideal for the waterfall.

Well, I think you let your expectations get the better of you, I don’t think that was a fail at all. Those Hasselblad photos were really nice.
Glad to see you back here. I’ve missed your local areas. 😊
Nice one mate. I must say the little X-S20 is great, if you recall I shot our January Spain trip with it - another enjoyable video, nice to see Triple falls in totally different conditions ❤
What are you doing watching videos? back to work ;-)
Actually, an entire series of well intentioned lens challenges always ending in cheating would be kind of funny.
Love everything about your photography and place of shooting. No fail here!
I really enjoyed this Pal ! The swirl shot is class and that framing with the Fuji inspiring.
Thanks, Darren!
I wish I could create Hasselblad 55 mm failures like yours, every image was a triumph! Maybe you can see this video as "Hasselblad versus Fujifilm XS 20." What Glorious images!
I didn't see this as fail - you still managed to get a great image with the prime lens. What a great location, looked so nice with the ferns. Great images.
I loved the compositions, if I could photograph like that I would be one happy guy.
I’m off to Japan in July and I’m only taking the 16-35mm so I can keep it light. So that’ll be a challenge. Probably less so than a 55mm but I’m actually excited to see what I come back with.
If you called it “One camera, one lens at a time” then it will always work 😂
Loved the wide waterfall with the swirling water picture.
Top drawer as always xx
Haha true enough
Foreground swirl @15:24 was a lovely capture. Cheers~Peter
A wonderful video Adam and the images were really beautiful. This is a great looking falls and I love those spring greens. Enjoyed this very much.
Many thanks
What an amazing place. A photographers delight.
Indeed you are the master of light and composition. Any lens or camera wont hinder you from the expressive command over any situation.
Love the swirl shots at the end, Adam. Lovely work.
Wow beautiful shots Adam………for a “fail” 😂 We have other commitments right now, but I am chomping at the bit to get over to the island and soak up some of the waterfall goodness. Great job of the video. love it.
Best swirl shot I’ve seen of yours from that location.
That shot of you at 1:07, a tiny figure against a primeval forest backdrop, reminded me of the scene in APOCALYPSE NOW just before when Martin Sheen and crew get surprised by a tiger. 😂
The swirls in the pic are superb I'm always on the look out for something similar yet to find but the quest goes on, once again superb
Nice shots of the swirling water along with the waterfalls, well done, Colin Devon uk...
Amazing location Adam rewarding you with some great images. Glad you had that little camera and wide angle lens 🙌❤️
Stunning swirly shots Adam i wish i had fails like those 😃
One more great video!.... I enjoy
Very much the second photo.
Really a beautiful picture... you
Could see it in a magazine like
The national géographic!....
Glad you enjoyed it
Thoroughly enjoyable as always…thanks Adam
Lovely images, thank you for sharing !!
Cheers,
Great images there Adam.
Love the last image.
Lovely photo's ..i really liked them.
Thank you for taking us with you..😊
My pleasure 😊
Lovely stuff . . .
Very nice photos! 🌞
Beautiful images sir. The one-lens challenge fail is funny. I tried it myself in Amsterdam taking out a prime and hated it. So frustrating. Zooming with your feet can make you bump into people, fall into canals, off precipices, just doesn't seem like a thing my life-insurance providers want me to do. And I have much less fun. Kudos to those that do it though, just not my thing.
Adam, excellent as usual. The Fuji shots surprised me, really pretty impressive. The one lense camera worked out pretty good you had some really nice shots there. As always great video Adam, thank you.
Great work Adam 👌
Thanks 👍
I’m visiting in Parksville so so you’ve inspired me to search out triple falls which I’ve never been to before. 😊
Great photos, Adam. The conditions were perfect for getting beautiful images in this hidden gem of a location. It’s interesting to see the same location in different conditions and times of the year, like the shot from the autumn. I’ve just pre-ordered Land & Light and am looking forward to getting my hands on it!
Awesome thanks for ordering I appreciate it
Nice video and those green colours - amazing. It also shows that no matter what camera you use, you make the best out of it. I also want to say that the Hasselblad shots were in my opinion not a total fail at all. I liked those that you showed very much.
The 55mm range is very still. Wide angle is more busy and more forgiving and lazy because it adds character of it's own. Capturing a scene with a 55mm lens is more transparent and truthful. When you do nail the composition with a 55 (which you do btw) I find it more compelling than anything with a wider angle. - Now to add to the challenge go for a square aspect ratio with that same lens. 🙂
Great image Adam. I do like it when you use the word challenge instead of problem
Beautiful image!
Many thanks!
Naturally all these shots look exceptional on youtube so it makes me wonder how the files are to work with during the editing phase. And also; how the camera is to use in the field.
The Hasselblad files are easier to edit. The Fuji easier to use in the field.
Fuji vs Hasselblad? End results are pretty good considering that the Fuji cost about 1/8 that of the Haselblad.
Splendid crop of images, that image with the frame of ferns is epic. Did the island get more moisture this spring? It looks a little more vibrant than last May.
Yes it's been much cooler and a bit more rain.
@@QuietLightPhoto enjoy the reprieve then!
Was it only the width that you didn't like about the first one? I thought it was lovely! And the swirl shot was magical of course. I especially loved that you didn't go too slow on the falls as I like when there is some detail left in the water. What a gorgeous location! You could do every season there!
As an APSC shooter, I found it interesting to see what you can achieve at 43mm in a situation where you would usually shoot at about 16mm (FF equiv). I don't own a superwide zoom so I am always trying to find compositions that are more 'zoomed in'.
That wide angle shot at 15:12 is awesome. Too bad the challenge wasn’t to use a 16-35 equivalent! Haha
Stunning images Adam. Waterfalls in my opinion are one of the most enjoyable subgenres of landscape photography. 2nd only to seascape for me because there's just something about long exposure photography that gives me a little extra satisfaction when it works.
Particularly loved the composition of images from the XS-20.
Many thanks!
Hi Adam - great video - could you not have tried vertical panos with the 55? Unless that's not the point of the one lens challenge?
yes that would have worked
Hi Uncle Grumpy! Did you see Fuji released a 500mm for medium format? Any plans to give it a try? That lens may finally allow me to take the plunge. I use my 100-400 a ton on full frame.
Yes I’ll be getting a loaner in the coming weeks
👍👏
When is land & Light out Adam please, is it next month? have Quiet Light and Aspen Zine, waiting to pull the trigger on release day! ❤
At this point it probably will not be until August
Sorry, I don't see any failure. Great video!👍👍👍👍
lol, well it was one camera, one 10-24mm. my favorite lens in close quarters
Couldn’t you have done a pano with the hasselblad to create a wide angle shot?
Yes
Good morning, good evening...but where is good afternoon? Like in whole Europe right now ;) Great video as always!
Good night
One lens challenge, who cares, get that shot, Adam!
nice Adam.. i dont know how you are doing your focus stacking in PS.. because ive tried no end with my GFX and every one especially if there is movement is a complete fail. The software simply cannot do it.
I used good dof with fairly high aperture and i take at least 4-5 shots so there is no chance of not getting the dof coverage in the image and no matter what there are still smudges etc.
How did you you make a success of the first hassy shot with just 2 images and a 55mm lens!?!!?! I mean you shot one of those at a wider fstop meaning dof on that one was shallow. How did ps handle that!? OR You using different software now?
Ive shot large format for a long while but cant afford it anymore, so without shifting the plane of focus, there is no way I can do what i like without stacking. Cambo systems are too expensive. Ive thought about getting the G adaptor for view camera, and going back to it but using the gfx, but i think im past using LF now. Wider lenses will not work with most of my compositions because i dont like those really wide/near and far field of views.. i like to compress the view, and I like my backgrounds really involved in the frame. Would appreciate if you can let me know thanks!
I’ll often do the stacks manually. You’re right if anything is moving then it doesn’t work very well. If you look carefully at the first images with the Hassy there are areas were I couldn’t get a good transition
Adam, at 0:45 , its 55mm x 0.79 ≈ 43mm equivalent 😉.
yep, thats what it says, thanks
The XCD 2.5/38V is awesome. It’s the most versatile lens of the new V and P lenses and edge 2 edge sharpest one.
@@QuietLightPhoto Thanks for the quick reply despite of the time shift. You’re in Vancouver I guess, I’m in Liechtenstein 🇱🇮, are you still up or already? 😅
55mm on medium format is considered wide, ~30mm when thinking in terms of 35mm format.
You’re right. But this isn’t really medium format, quite a bit smaller so it translates to 43mm. 35mm would have worked I think.
I see a new tripod Adam. What's the story on that.
Yes a new tripod from Kingjoy, just trying them out
Why did you need to focus stack?
If you plan a 2 shot blend to deal with foreground freezing (leaves/fast shutter) and then 2nd shot drag (falls/slow shutter), then you’d likely focus on leaves 1st as you’ll ignore the falls focus and then the opposite for the falls focus ignoring the foreground leaves. Just my .02
What Peter said 😉
@@QuietLightPhoto thanks!! Much appreciated!
I think more properly speaking, this is aperture stacking, than focus stacking. Not to be pedantic . . .
@@ronjenkins4257 hi there, not to defend my comment as I’m no expert like uncle grumpy here, but out of curiosity, why would you change aperture for this scenario?
That was no fail. You learned what doesn’t work….
28p is better for you
Eh, best laid plans and all that.
Perhaps you are only kidding, but it seems you are a bit hard on yourself. What was a fail?
Just click bait, no fails other than me not keeping to my script.
