Kent State player forgets the score and fouls Akron to lose the game

- During the MAC tournament college basketball game between Akron and Kent State, a Kent State player made a brutal mistake when he intentionally fouled Akron after the Golden Flashes had just take a one point lead with under ten seconds to go. Akron was in the bonus and hit both free throws to take a one point lead with under five seconds left. Kent State was unable to score on the final possession and the Zips won 62-61 to win the MAC and clinch a spot in the NCAA tournament.

The fact that intentional fouling is an integral aspect of strategy in basketball, disqualifies it as a top tier sport.
Insitute a 4 or point line if you want to allow for late game comebacks. Make 2 point fouls worth 3 shots, 4 shots for 3 pointers. Then cut back on ticky tack foul calls. Would be a much more watchable sport and eliminate free throw fests at end of game.

How do you not have score awareness in this situation? Even the crowd reaction after the made shot should have given it away.
He had it in his brain they'd be down 3 when the opponent as shooting free-throw, they missed the first of a 1-1 but in his mind they were down 3, then when his team scored he thought they were still down 1.

I remember playing intramural basketball in high school. My class was undefeated and a lock to win the championship. In our last game; the student-referee called a foul on a senior in my class. He didn’t like it and started yelling and cursing at the referee. He called a couple of technical fouls on him and ejected him. That meant an automatic forfeit for our team. It also meant we were ineligible for the playoffs. Our season ended because of him. Nobody spoke to him the rest of the school year. This is the third time I've seen this happen. First time was to Vanderbilt against Northwestern in the 2017 tournament and years ago to Arizona in a game against UAB that was on ESPN.
This happened in an NCAA tournament game between Vanderbilt and Northwestern in 2017 - Vanderbilt had just scored to go up by 1 with something like 14 seconds remaining and they fouled on the inbounds, thinking they were down 1 instead of up 1. Just like here, the Northwestern player made both FT's to decide the game.

Reminds me of Georgetown's Fred Brown passing to UNC's James Worthy. 😂😂😂
This happened to my team my Senior year in HS. Junior starting guard fouls their best FT shooter on the road and up 1. It was worse than this because we were coming out of a timeout and at no time did we talk about fouling. Not only that, the player who did the foul was an intelligent guy, ended up working for Rolls-Royce (turbine engines) after graduating college.
It not only lost us a game, but we got crappy seeding because of the L, had to play the same team again in the tourney, and then got screwed over on the last play of the game as the refs decided traveling wasnt a call they could make on the last play of the game, even though he clearly did. Our Coach didnt help, had the wrong big man in, had the scorer and not the defender/rebounder.
