@@HistoryMysteryMan 6 months later re visited your excellent video and saw my error. The other country was USA. I went to Knoxville nationals in 1989 and ended up crewing. Amazing experience. Wolfgang won it that year. But Pevely was my favourite track. Hard to comprehend how fast they are there. Watched Steve and the family at Parramatta to against the Ozzie's and New Zealand's Barry Butterworth in Jan 1987. I think Steve won that one. Then we flew back to New Zealand a few days later and there was Steve Kinser sitting in economy with the whole clan. Randy, Kelly etc. on their way to Auckland for a connecting flight back to the USA. The Kinsers probably didn't realise that when they landed in Auckland they were little more than 10miles away from Western Springs Speedway, famous for its running of the 50 lapper, a race won by many Americans. Finally got to see him race in New Zealand in about 2018 at Western Springs. Not the best track for Sprintcars as very little banking and only a quarter mile. But he won the feature there to. Steve seems like a great guy. Enjoyed watching it again.

The first time I even heard of Steve was at Ascot speedway. It was at the Peabody special in 1983. Everyone around us were going nuts about this guy. If I remember right, he timed in about 14th fastest. In his heat race, he moved up 1, maybe 2 spots. I think he started around 8th in the main. If my memory serves me right, it took around 5 laps for him to take the lead for good that night. He was racing wingless. The next day, we were at the old Riverside speedway to see an unknown by the name of Bill in a number 9 Ford thunder bird win his first ever Nascar car race.

I loved that both Him and Karl were as nice and polite to Us as competitors as they were to everyone else.. there was Zero "Ego" with them.. Total Respect for them. Even Asked Karl for some Advise one night on OUR setup.. and he came over and gave us his opinion.. Not many would do that..

You nailed it again Don “all the gladiators and pioneers who paved the way” sure is true…..i saw Steve race at our local “Baypark Speedway” here in New Zealand back in January 2006 along with his son Kraig, Swindle and others. I also saw him race at Baylands, CA in 85/86. What I get from this and other interviews is the “dirt” lifted these guys out of what may have been a life of unknown mundane 9 to 5 work/job(no offence intended), Steve(I guess) would have been a block layer following in his dads footsteps possibly, but also what such a pleasant and humble man, much respect. It may have been racing at its best but they were really in the “entertainment” industry, just so cool and way better than anything Hollywood as this was REAL. Us Kiwis and Aussies so luv America and all its fantastic people like you, Steve Kinser, Allan Barr and many others in the racing industry.
