  • This video is to demonstrate HOW NOT TO SOLDER POTs and what to do IF You Screw one up and dump a ton of Solder on one. When I said I USED a TON of Solder on the ES POTs I never meant THIS MUCH. I should have been more clear. I used more than normal as in one drop. Mainly I exposed more copper wire for connections and groundings and made sure to cover all the exposed wire. THATs ALL. NOT an Entire TUBE or REEL of Solder on One Guitar! I mean come on. Looking at these samples is that what you THOUGHT I MEANT?

Never, thought to take the back off. Superstitions and confidence has keep me from most home repairs. Gonna heat up the old iron and clean some pots. thanks for the info.

Its a pleasure to watch this salvage job on good quality pots.Maybe put a meter on them to see how close they read to 500k, 250k and they would be good as new or is that worth doing. Me, I don’t know much so please excuse
my question if its not helpful.

I have some gunked up pots like that. I think I'll get me one of those de-soldering irons. Thanks for the tutorial

3rd Have ever seen to do this job. The soldering Iron he was using had to be 20 years old had tape on the cord in several spots for breaks and the connector was old style as well. So, I gave him a few tips and helped him out with one extra I had in the shop. If Im not mistaken his old one was only 20watts? Which sure didn't help the situation. You have to remember that these Irons are kinda Cheap for the common ones like 40watters maybe $20 bucks. Course the full control 1s can run up 2 $100

Good info Dave. I was hoping to watch you attempt to wrestle one of those pots ... no spectacular finale ? Whats with them pots ... I've made a mess inside my guitar cavity but that exceeds all expectations I could have ever had!!!

If you have issues soldering to pots, you also have a cheep iron, and not enough wattage, has nothing to do with experience. I have made tons of money cleaning up after this, people get the wiring correct, and burn up pots, cold solder joints, excessive dwell time, and horrible looking joints, the root cause is a cheep, underpowered soldering iron. A hakko 888 is only $100, it will last you a lifetime, it will solder pots perfectly. With little experience needed, a pro with a bad iron will make a mess, it’s wattage. I now use a metcal station, it’s over $ 1k, and worth every penny for me, chuck that cheep iron in the trash, and get a least a hakko,

I love your intro. What is the name of the tune? I’d like to play it n my tele but I might have to learn it by ear.

Well, thats one way of doing it. But added work if you just do it right. You can simply drop solder on the top and then TIN the connections or wire ends and simply press the two together with the iron and it's done. OR, Tin the wire and hold it in place on the pot and drop solder on both. DROP DROP and it's done. The connectors simply fill those in that are used. Fold over the connectors that are grounded against the POT and your done. The mess you saw was a first time effort by a friend. What

THANKS WES, Seems I need to start asking for subs since I am still at the same number for the last 6 months. Not growing any more and If you are Not Growing You are Dying. Right? At first I only wanted a few subs to talk to personally. But, that changed when one video I did hit big. So, to do some really fun things I want to do I will need more viewers and all I can do is ask.So, the NEXT video should be about the T-Shirt! Last Minute changes so as not to offend anyone with the Back of the shirt

I have a drone. It was zapped and fell 300 feet to the ground. Amazing no damage. A wire shook off of the circuit board. I was at an RV park with a couple people. I let one soldier the wires to the circuit board. The other said he burnt the pot. Can this be repaired from what I'm saying??? Am I even making sense?

THANKS for WATCHING...and Wes you go a ton further than I ever do on cleaning these POTs up. Normally, when I am switching something in and out on my friends guitars I just remove the very top layer that's form from some passes on the top with my "SLUG IRON". That top Sheen of Solder offers an excellent TIN top for the entire POT so I can choose where ever I want to ground a wire on the top. And makes it still only a 2 hand job rather than clips or vices. But, you have to feel sorry for the guy

Buddy, this MESS that I came across was the result of a friend Trying to do a MOD himself. You see the TONS of Solder? Well, he took me for my word when I said I used a TON on my work on the ES models. BUT< This is like 10 TONS. He really went well beyond what I was talking about and I showed him exactly what I really meant by using a TON of solder to keep these wires where they belong inside an ES model. STILL NO PICNIC.

Good idea, taking the pot apart to clean it...

  • @Davesintexas

2nd A MESS! He has just purchased those POTs! He tried to hold the wire and the solder and iron all at the same time instead of getting a set of large aligator clips or using something to hold the wire in place. So, as he explained, and as I tried not to laugh, the wires would fall off just as the drop was being placed to hold it. So, drop after drop he made mountains of solder on those POTs and one he came close to burning looking at the inside. All that Gel had melted off and vapor i guess

a better way to do this, may be to take the backs and use a heat gun and a small scraper to remove the old solder. Ive had quite a bit of luck using that method

Thats a Great Tip. Course gota have that Heat Gun and most players will have a soldering iron. Have a good one

I mean here he was trying his best to get those wires to stick and he's telling me that each time he heated the wire and the DROPs the wires fell out or rose to the top and were exposed. So, I showed him several Large Alligator Clips that would stop that from happening. Well stop from happening on the OUTSIDE of the cavity. Someone needs to make a 90 degree clip. Ive seen medical tools that have screw down tongs that are 90s but WAY expensive for this type work. Plus, he had the worst tools I
