"I've Got a Tiger By the Tail" is a song made famous by country music band Buck Owens and the Buckaroos. Released in December 1964, the song was one of Owens' signature songs and showcases of the Bakersfield sound in the genre.
In 1965, Dave Berry used "I've Got a Tiger By the Tail" as the B-side of his single "Little Things" and the single reached number 5 in the UK Singles Chart.
I've Got a Tiger by the Tail is an album by Buck Owens and his Buckaroos, released in 1965. It reached Number one on the Billboard Country charts and Number 43 on the Pop Albums charts.
It was re-released on CD in 1995 by Sundazed Records with two bonus tracks, both live performances recorded in Bakersfield, CA at the Civic Auditorium in October 1963. The album was included in Robert Dimery's 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die
Alvis Edgar Owens Jr. (August 12, 1929 - March 25, 2006), professionally known as Buck Owens, was an American musician, singer, songwriter and band leader who had 21 No. 1 hits on the Billboard country music charts with his band the Buckaroos. They pioneered what came to be called the Bakersfield sound, named after Bakersfield, California, the city Owens called home and from which he drew inspiration for what he preferred to call American music.
While Owens originally used fiddle and retained pedal steel guitar into the 1970s, his sound on records and onstage was always more stripped-down and elemental. His signature style was based on simple storylines, infectious choruses, a twangy electric guitar, an insistent rhythm supplied by a drum track placed forward in the mix, and high two-part harmonies featuring him and his guitarist Don Rich

Lyrics:
I've got a tiger by the tail, it's plain to see
I won't be much when you get through with me
Well, I'm a losing weight and a turnin' mighty pale
Looks like I've got a tiger by the tail
Well, I thought the day I met you, you were meek as a lamb
Just the kind to fit my dreams and plans
But now the pace we're livin' takes the wind from my sails
And it looks like I've got a tiger by the tail
I've got a tiger by the tail, it's plain to see
I won't be much when you get through with me
Well, I'm a losing weight and a turnin' mighty pale
Looks like I've got a tiger by the tail
Well, every night you drag me where the bright lights are found
There ain't no way to slow you down
I'm as 'bout as helpless as a leaf in a gale
And it looks like I've got a tiger by the tail
I've got a tiger by the tail, it's plain to see
I won't be much when you get through with me
Well, I'm a losing weight and a turnin' mighty pale
Looks like I've got a tiger by the tall
Thank you very much ❤️❤️❤️❤️
In 15 minutes the lyrics were written by Harlan Howard and the music was written by Buck Owens while they were driving an automobile and they saw an Esso sign “put a tiger in your tank”.
I have a mint condition 45 of this song! it pays to look for music at garage sales, sometimes you get lucky! (Blough rhymes with how).
I agree with that I'm a musician also
Brilliant
Let’s not overlook the fact that the beginning of Don Rich’s solo in the silence led perfectly into a key change on the downbeat. Mindblown.
I've listened to this tune a thousand times and never caught the key change.
@@stanmizerny5609
Yessir. Starts in E and Don starts his solo in F
@@dukeofearlbanjo i hear song starting in D# and changing to E at the start of Don's solo. The record just stays in the key of E correct?
@@peggyschenk826 In the record it does stay in E.
Such a polished out-fit! Very impressive
Those two fucking guys were meant to sing and harmonize together. I'm so glad I was alive to appreciate their combined talent
Don Rich always looked like he was having the best time. What a loss, so young when he died.
50 years ago this month (July 2024)
Wish country music still sounded like this! Buck Owens forever!
I love how you can hear Don Rich's smile in his singing.
Right! You can just see and hear how much fun these guys were having.
You certainly can! That’s a great way to describe it.
miss him understand one of Marty Sturats band owns that silver tele
Don Rich could pick with the best of them because he was one of the best. R.I.P. Don and Buck.
I just have to say this I think I saw my dad cry twice in my life time when I join the army and when I gave a him a CD box collection of buck and the buckaroos for Christmas my dad met and talk to buck a couple of times born in Mexico came to USA at the age of 19 because an American citizen in 1963 he loved this country with a passion my dad dress up in cowboy clothes all the time always wore his cowboy hat he loved buck
I'm a dyed in the wool stratocaster player, but Don Rich gives me tele cravings like no one, and I listen to all kinds of guitar players. Don's tone is so iconic.
If your a 'strat guy' stick with it and play like it (Ritchie Blackmore) 'Highway star' 'Man on the silver mountain' 'Smoke on the water'..what sounds better than that guitar tone?
Go listen to Roy Nichols. That’ll put you over the edge.
Those costumes aren’t cheap 💰🤩
Don Rich was truely outstanding. He and Buck harmonized well. On a sad note Don Rich died tragically in a motorcycle accident. Buck Owens was very effected by his sudden death.
+George Torossian OH no- so sad to hear about Dons tragic event!!
George, I remember Buck on A.M. radio and from the shitkicker bars back in the day in Washington. I have been a sessions guitarist for decades. Anyone with any music training will surely see Don and realize THAT guy is the real talent.
Affected
Hey Jason, make like a leper's arm and flake off, eh?
@Bill G Don was definitely the real article when it came down to playing his guitar and harmonizing vocals. Everything he that did looked and sounded effortless
I'm 54 and basically a hardcore punk rock / metal guy, but growing up i loved Buck Owens. According to my mother, my first words were Buck's name. Still listen to Buck in between Slayer and Verbal Abuse records and am planning on a Buck tattoo.
Don Rich and Buck Owens are in heaven having a hell of a jam.
Larry Tyler love those guys.
We are not God's counselor or his adviser. We have no authority to say what or where any of us will be or what we will be doing. We are only the creation. We do not speak for God. Eternity will not be about any of us or what we have done. It will all be about Jesus Christ who died on a cross to save us from our sins. We all deserve hell.
@@JohnSmith-uy7sv utter BS. fairy tales from the past. have you actually thought about what you wrote? i don't deserve a hell. an eternity of anything bad doesn't equal anything i ever did or will do. stop the koolaid and do some research.
what are they jamming with? hands, ears? are there sound waves in this "heaven" you refer to? brains, or nervous systems?

Today is July 17, 2024, and I'm listening to this great music.
They don't need 50 layers of production with those outfits on. Brings back memories of hee haw on Saturday night
One of the greatest partnerships in country music, Buck Owens and Don Rich.
That's not "Country Music" like we hear today. It is Country& Western!
Big Difference isn't it?
My wife's a tiger by the tail..and I've gained a few gray hairs. But after all said and done, I'd never trade her in. Robert at 68.
Some years ago I saw his son, an exact copy of Buck, playing on TV. I couldn't wrap my head around it, I thought it was Buck! But, But, "he's passed away!" My husband just laughed at me...
When I was a kid out playing with the gang, I always stopped, came in to watch the Buck Owens show. I wouldn't miss it.
When country music was actually country music
@Kenneþ Alansson Friþiby Mind explaining how this is rockabilly?
Ya, the 'Bakersfield sound' and thats when central California country was cool. Not that southern hick stuff, but then thats O.K. cuz I love Glen Campbell, Ernest tubb, and Donna Fargo, Bob at 66.
Agree, itsme 23 !!
Three chords, basic harmonies: Powerful and Enjoyable.
plenty of actual country music made today, confederate man.
@@bobmalack481 ya full of democrats these days im afraid
Buck and Don's harmonies are so great. Don Rich's guitar picking is superb! Love the solo on this.
These guys were GREAT. What natural entertainers without 50 layers of production. Just pure music, wonderful.
Rest In Peace Buck Owens. Thanks for sharing your talent with the world.
RIP Don Rich.
I believe Don could have showed a lot of rock Guitarist a thing or to
Todays,C&W musicians should listen to these guys and others like them perform. This is what you call talent not this crap we hear today. Great Video!!!!!!!
Damn right
Don Rich...what a killer guitar player!
+TheFashionbugs I don't think so, but he's bending behind the nut in his solo
+Dan Griffin I know everybody says Chet Atkins or Roy Clarke were the best but sorry people Don Rich was the KING!!!!!!!!!!!! HUGH LOSS TO BUCK AND COUNTRY MUSIC!!!!!!!!!
+Charlie Harper Could he play two different songs the same time, Chet could. Could he play lead and rythem at the same time? Chet could. How many albums has he sold over the years. Chet sold many.
There was only one best gtare and backup vocalist in the world and that was don rich. If you don’t get that, I hope you do someday.
@@intimidator6969 If Don Rich was still here with us, I bet he would still be playing and showing up with Vince Gill, Keith Urban, Brad Paisley, and other country music guitarists on awards shows these days. What a great talent taken that left us too early! RIP "Dangerous" Don Rich Aug 15, 1941 - Jul 17, 1974
I'm not the biggest country music fan out there, but this beauty is awesome!
You know, every time I watch those two guys sing together, they are smiling! You can tell they truly loved what they were doing!
Remember back when country music was FUN? Put a quarter in the juke box!
Hands down, my personal favorite Buck Owens song!
Don was the heart and soul of the Buckaroos.
Nonsense, Buck was the star
@@impassable Buck was, indeed, but after Don died in a fatal motorcycle crash in 1974, Buck retired for a time and only Merle Haggard was left to carry on the Bakersfield sound until Kentucky-born Dwight Yoakam emerged on the scene in 1986.
Bucks new Bakersfield sound laid some roots for rock. Agree?
I wish that someone would save and redigitize these great vintage tv shows and movies before they're lost forever.
For some reason, this song popped into my head.
Their voices blended together perfectly…damn son
E A B on all songs and you can't forget them! Buck Owens was the best!
Yes but here theres a chord change when Don starts the solo that the whole song is in another chords pattern, it looks like Buck plays F, B something and then C. do you know ?
Bud and Buck were in sinc like the Everly Brothers, that is to say Totally. A rare quality indeed.
Their harmonies are just a joy to listen to.
Buck is so damned underrated. Incredible vocal
What is there not to like about Buck Owens. He was a great entertainer and a great singer. I love the man and his music. He is a legend of country music and I recognize his excellence. Hee Haw was a great show and wish it was still on tv.
You don't get RFD?
whats rfd?
randy snide
I think it must be a TV channel that carries Hee Haw.
You were born too late pardner, but thank God for CZcams. "Rural TV" was the logo on the screen at rfd TV where I saw it. Good luck.
I grew up watching Hee Haw. No wonder my musical tastes gravitate toward traditional and country music.
Boy! I remember seeing Buck Owens & The Buckaroos in concert back in the day. The overwhelming impression was professionalism. These guys were dedicated musicians, at the top of their profession, in peak form. Great, simply great !!
.
This is good music all the way.😊😊😊😊
I always liked that Don Rich smiled on the TV show.
When the Nashville machine was putting out a bunch of music that all sounded the same these guys were giving the people something real and the record charts showed what the people like best.
I am a Canadian who loves Americans as my own! Please love me back!!!! America I love you!!! Keep playing your beautiful music!!!
Love that Buck Owens signature delayed lead-in, "I've...Got...a...Tiger by tail it's plain to see...
Wonderful to see all the young people viewing these old videos of Buck, Dwight, Johnny C & all the Country Music greats!
I love the Country music
Welcome to Buckersfield!!
Don Rich was fucking awesome!
My mother always loved to hear Don Rich she sing. She thought he was a cutie

My grandma's favorite country entertainer. She even lived in Bakersfield, CA for period of time where Buck had a strong presence there.

They made look so easy. Loved ‘em👍
Thanks for sharing
👍👍👍👍👍
if you have a strong woman--you do have a tiger by the tail. here is to the late buck owens-he was the hottie of his time.
Great song, great singin' and oh man, that Telecaster solo is sublime.
Are you deaf? He's playing the wrong scale. Great song though.
@@plastercaster8036 No one who loves this solo is "deaf." He starts out of the key of the song and then transitions into key - it's brilliant and it's 100% deliberate. It's a sign of high level musicality that a guitar player would even try this, let alone execute it to perfection. And it sounds amazing.
@@ArturoGofunkez suit yourself.
Love Buck owens great singer
Hello Susan 👋 how are you ?
Bakersfield's finest !
Awesome
Ladies and gentlemen I present to you the Golden Age of Country Music.
A lot of people don't realize how good a player Buck was. Google Buckaroo.
Too bad they don't make music like this anymore.
Music like this is made today, you just won't find it on popular radio
Humpy If that's true then name me someone besides George Strait and Josh Turner.
Come to Texas it's everywhere.
patrick keegan I was in Texas for two months and I agree with you sir. I heard a lot of classic country on the radio. It was awesome.
patrick keegan If that's the case, then I'm on my way.
From what I've read Buck Owens was a consumate professional that knew the business, stayed clear of it's pitfalls, and knew how to tailor a song that would be a hit.
So fun to sing this song out loud, especially saying "I got a tiger by the tail, it's plan to see!"
Love the "Bakersfield Sound".
These boys were some tight players. Miss seeing Buck Owens today.
love this,...love the hair, love the Matador Jackets, Love this!
I sure do miss him on Hee Haw. My favorite show to watch on the tube in the 70s.
my late mother emma martini just loved this buck owens and the buckaroos song I've got a tiger by the tail.
Buck Owens music is the best beer drinking music ever!
Brings back memories, as my father loved his music
In reality, Don Rich and Buck were a duo. Don was 31 when he died in a motorcycle crash, and Buck was devastated, to the point where he never really recovered. His music took a bad hit too, but to see these two best friends, so close they were like brothers, making some of the best Country music ever is just wonderful.
When I was a little kid I thought Country music was crap. I was a little music snob, but to my credit, I always watched those Country Western shows on TV on the weekends, like the Buck Owens Show, so I couldn´t have hated it that much. Now I look at these guys, especially Don and Buck and I get all emotional. The CW musicians today, maybe they´re as good as the musicians in the 60s, but how would we know? It´s all loops and effects nowadays, and the bands all sound alike. And I don´t know that the Bakersfield Sound would even be popular today. And what about the others? The Roy Clarks and Glenn Campbells? Could they make it today? I´m not sure they could. Maybe Willie could make it all over again, because he´s such a character but the rest?
Buck should have been a movie star, like in the song. He was the most handsome white guy who ever lived.
And a very young Merle Haggard on Bass too. :)
My Mom made us listen to Buck and I am so glad she did! WooF1
