Update: I took the car to the dealership shortly after making this video, and they did fix it. If I recall correctly, they reflashed the ECU and it fixed the issue!
I wonder if they actually replaced the part others have mentioned here and they said they reflashed the ECU just so that you and others can't know how to fix it and have to pay to have it done. Either warranty or out of pocket they get paid.
My Elentra 2016 with 190k KM did that too and i changed the inhibitor switch part number *42700 26700* cost me less than 45$ box and i fix it my self it's located under the air filter case. Very easy job no need for a workshop
Yes, this is a serious problem. I'd describe my 2013 Elantra as a lemon at this point. The problem first popped up when the car was just under 18 months old. The dealership told me then, "All you have to do is pop off the little tab and jab something small down the hole." That did work -- but how would THEY like to be told that they need to carry a tiny screwdriver around in a car fewer than two years old? They've tried twice since then to deal with it in other ways; I noticed when they "fixed" it last time, the car lurched several times as I was starting it up and moving backward or forward. Now it lurches when I'm on the road so this is very serious. I'm taking it in again tomorrow.
This issue I faced it in my elentra 2013 .. you need to remove inhibitor switch male female plug and see the terminals may broken. And look to cable and wires may damaged. I hope this going to help you
The ones saying Elantra is bad no mines at 200k and it’s still going I have kept up on it no issues so whoever said that there crap no you might of put it in the ground by being hard on the car.
my car has same issue. only difference is it push start. I put in neutral turned car off. then turned car back on but still not able to move it to park
My issue is resolved by changing the Neutral safety switch which is under the fuse box in Elantra hood. The issue was serious and got resolved after changing it however, better to clean the connector as well. Good luck or for any more queries you can reply and I would be happy to help.
Emerito cotto no it’s not but if your Car’s rpm is bit higher than normal you can get throttle body cleaned or when was the last time you changed the gear oil or check the gear body support as it might need a replacement. Give me more details what exactly the issue you’re facing and is it frequent?
Syed Zeeshan ul Hassan mine problem is a little bit different. Mine shifter moves freely but the display on the dashboard shows neutral. In effect the car doesn’t move forward nor reverse.
My 2011 Entra started doing the same thing. I have the electronic start and have to mess with turning it off and on to try and find Park or Reverse. Mine started up while in the driveway. Wouldn't go into Reverse right away then shot really fast backwards and scared the crap out of me.
Never had this problem until today. I freaked out cuz it happened at work and a coworker said it would probably cost 3k-4k to fix. Luckily I stuck a screwdriver into the "shift lock release" slot and it worked.

if you have receive a new motor,,surely the mechanicien have not connected the transmission wire correctly on the transmission..the little bolt is not correctly fixed,,and can't change the position,,,i have already had this problem right after a new motor,,,,,2 day after,,,this bolt is enough easy to find under the hood ,

William Reed this seems to be a common problem I have a 2012 with 56000 miles and its starting to make noise when I start it or sound like it won't start

Very good congratulations. I love Toyota, I had one where I was living before to come to USA, it never give me this mechanical failures and it was a Toyota Corolla Luxel from 2001. I was driving that car everywhere, even outside of the city. For that reason Toyota all the best :-)
I popped off the little tab (far left) stuck a pocket knife into it and released the gearshift no one tells you that this is an option but after having my car towed and it wouldn't duplicate being locked into drive or reverse- I found out what that little tab is for. I love my Hyundai but have had this issue for three years 😡
I suppose that when we buy a Car this one has all the mechanical parts tested before to come in the market, those companies has a lot of money to do that and they pay a lot of money to engineering it. why it looks like we (costumers) are rat lab for then?

Luckily you have a 10 year/100k mile power train warranty...unless you brought it used...then you're screwed.

Had that problem adjusted the neutral switch went in Reverse okay replace the switch problem solved

Restart the car, don't take the key out while it's in neutral. It needs to be in park.

Hyundai will fix it for you. Take it to the dealership. It's a known problem, and they have addressed it.
I was going to get an Elantra. After seeing this, I'm not so sure now. I don't need another problematic car.

The dealership fixed mine free under warranty. I forgot the problem exactly but it was a quick fix.
