I had moved to California in the late 90s during the dot com bubble. Lived there until the late 2000s before finally moving away to Florida. The main reason for the move was the high cost of living. Despite having a hi tech salary, I simply could not get ahead over there. My standard of living was far lower than college classmates of mine that lived in other states; even though my salary was higher. Since moving to Florida, I now own my home outright and I also have an investment property. Standard of living is light years ahead of what I had in California.

I, happily, left the Bay Area 10 years ago. Life, at least economically and politically, is so much better. After living my whole life in California (40 years) I realize I had no idea how hard life is there. Beautiful state, but they've made it normal life inobtainable for the average joe there. Great place to live if you're part of the 1%.

I visited the Bay Area last fall, we couldn’t go across the bay because of gang activity, we had to avoid some neighborhoods because of risk of violence, and right in front of us an acid attack occurred in what appeared to be a safe tourist area.

Eden Ternian I'm all for it! I would prefer that non-citizens not even be allowed to buy residential property; corporations/hedge funds should not be able to buy residential properties, either. This is extraction and the creation of serfdom and a share cropper economy.

James Allen. I agree. It's brutal. If you grew up before The Valley of Heart's Delight turned into Silicon Hell, you can't go back again. It was so wonderful in the 50s and 60s, 70s. Even if you can afford it, the traffic is beyond endurance. Long before I left, people were already commuting to the Bay Area from Sacramento.

Basically, California is too liberal, has way too high taxes, is heavily polluted, and is overpopulated/overpriced. It's a shame, because it really is a beautiful state with warm weather, nice beaches, a strong tech sector economy, and lots of fine colleges.

You really shouldn’t generalize California as a whole, apart from the stupid tax hikes. Several cities are not as snow-flake-infested as you think. Consider Northern California’s bay area as the epicenter of why people hate California. Other cities like San Diego and Pasadena have an excellent atmosphere. Remember, it is a very big state.

To name a few top issues in addition to housing costs: illegal immigrants/migrants, top heavy population on government support and payrolls, sanctuary cities, under-educated politicians who favor sanctuary cities, and protection for illegals and illegal criminals, crime.

Every new tax California state tax that has been applied in the past twelve years has had to lower their expected revenues because people drastically stopped using that service or product. Again they want to tax fuel. Do they have the same delusions of grandeur of the massive revenues that they think that will come in? People are leaving, so they will not be purchasing as much fuel. Fuel will be costing a lot more, so more people will be finding alternative transportation. With both scenarios, there will be significantly lower fuel purchased and significantly lower tax income. Another delusional bubble burst. Color me surprised Governor Brown.

Move 5 hours away and stay within the failed state.

Want to bring Bay Area housing costs down? Pass a federal law forbidding non-US citizens to own real estate. The price hikes are mostly caused by bidding wars with rich foreigners. They want second (or third or fourth) homes in our country, and can outbid US homebuyers.

Californias golden era was over decades ago. Its horrible, The cost of living is ridiculous. The people are the most unfriendly I have ever been around. Ive been here 8 months. Im leaving tomorrow. Either for Boise, ID or maybe back to Colorado. Texas is okay at best. Shit weather in Houston with humidity that rivals parts of Florida. and no real outdoor life. Super red state, nearly brainwashed about religion. I need a middle ground. SOme conservatives views are fine. Where are the freaking down to earth folks?? Nebraska?
I don't like that everyone is going into extremes, either hard Blue or HARD red. I need a middle ground. Life is more than seeing black n white.
For me the main thing about living somewhere is the wholesomeness of the people. because in the end, people need people.
    Arizona sucks too!
I agree with the stress here, I never feel at peace here. I have a very close special friend but she has family and a good job here but works her ass off and she has a PHD and barely gets by. Does NOT make sense. I hope she gets out too soon.
    Cheers!!
