  • The Porsche Caynne and more specificaly the 955 generation Turbo or Turbo S has been on my to do list for a while now. I've always lusted after one, more and more so over recent years. Today, I get my first experience behind the wheel of one, non-turbo 4.5 V8 Cayenne S and it didn't dissapoint!

I have a Cayenne 4.5s and totally agree with your comments in the video. It’s a great car with a fantastic engine! I won’t part with mine at all. Just keep in mind the running costs and when things start to break. I have experienced that this year with rubber hoses and radiators! Expensive, but once done, I hopefully don’t have to worry about it. Other tip, get yourself a good Porsche specialist to carry out servicing and works!

After years and years (20, really) of being in love with this generation of Porsche Cayenne, I decided to purchase one earlier this year, and I could not be happier. The V8 sounds and the build quality are worth the experience just by themselves. For all of those who are considering one and can find a clean unit with a replaced cooling system, I can’t recommend it enough.

I bought a Gen 1 base Cayenne a few years back after my 3rd L322 gave up on me. I found the power was a little lacking but I still fell in love with it and it started my obsession with Porsche (Cayenne was followed by a Boxster then a 911). Like others have said they drink fuel and eat tyres, so you’ll need to budget for that, and mine had a few issues (mostly electronic - lights and parking sensors especially in the winter) oh and the driveshaft which packed up on me, but if you find a good VAG mechanic a lot of the parts are shared with the Touareg (including the driveshaft!) so maintenance costs can be reduced a little. For me the sweet spot would be the 957 GTS - slightly sharper styling, nice interior upgrades and the best sounding exhaust imo. I often find myself trying to man math another onto my drive but the fuel consumption ultimately puts me off pulling the trigger again! Keep up the great content Joel!

I would definitely fork out an extra 2/3K and get a Turbo model. (maybe slightly impartial being a Turbo owner) However, the amount you get extra as standard with the Turbo and sheer performance you get, is definitely the sweet spot. Only thing the Cayenne S has over the Turbo, is a sweeter soundtrack. However I’m sure an exhaust modification can sort that out 😉

I happily waft along in my 650BHP 957 Turbo S and smile when I put it in Sport and hit the loud pedal, proud that the fuel gauge is going down visibly and my current MPG is reading zero. @@E50AK Yes, the V8 is a diva, this was the main reason I went with the V6 natural aspirated. If you take care (wait until is at temperature before driving at high revs, etc...) then is an engine that would last forever. No overheating issues, no gearbox problems, other than the "normal" tiptronic behaviour, that sometimes when going into 4th from 5th it smashes the gear abruptly in. It keeps giving me a heartache every time it does, but I heard, it is "normal" with those old tiptronic gearboxes.

If you're on the fence about a Turbo at 450 bhp, I'd say go for the Range Rover Sport Supercharged V8 which is 385 bhp and you won't be disappointed. I've had a few RR Sport Supercharged and they are great cars, but for me the Turbo S and 521 bhp is really tempting. Just make sure you have deep pockets to deal with the ongoing maintenance let alone the times it breaks down and needs big repairs. More bhp the better 🤣

Cayennes are different class to range rovers. They are way more reliable when the known few issues have been sorted, they are just as good off road but on the road the handling is next level takes corners like a car.

My Parents had one, swapped an X5 for it, it was actually brilliant!! until you’ve had one you don’t respect it. I removed one year it got snowed in like up to its wheel arches, and it just pulled off the drive as if nothing was there. Comfortable as well. More so than my disco 4. I have a soft spot for them I’d have one over an l322 but not an l405, black turbo one on autotrader for 13,995 in Bedford looks minter

I’m two weeks into my purchase of a 2003 Cayenne S. I’ve owned a Boxster and Cayman previously but this time fancies something big and great value. £3400 doesn’t seem right for this much car! I love it, ask me that after it’s gone for it’s MOT in a couple of weeks! Also has a battery issue at the moment but I’m hoping they will be sorted very soon.. fingers crossed. Ow and yes, the 14mpg isn’t fun but I don’t do a lot of miles per week. 😊

Vw touareg was one of the early 00s cars when VW went all out to make the best car in its class by a long way, cost be damned (See also, Bugatti Veyron, VW Phaeton, Audi A2 3l etc). So being based on the platform just means it got some serious engineering behind it.

Personally owned two Cayenne, found them very easy to live with. Never had any major issues, they like tyres, plus can’t pass a petrol station. One one thing I would say, change the battery, for a genuine Porsche, which is under the passenger seat, transformed both cars.
Would I have another, no, wouldn’t want to push my luck. Push your budget hard, you will save money in the long run

Look up on Google earth, we’re the car came from. If it’s been a London car, the miles maybe lower, but it’s average speed will be 5mph, sat in traffic. Go higher miles, regular use, recent money spent
