  • This is the first part of a three part tutorial on how to make a cross stitch pattern using images or sprites. It was created courtesy of GameCrafts. Their stores can be found at www.etsy.com/s.... There are two links mentioned in this video: www.spriters-re... and www.gimp.org/.
The second video works with KG chart and can be found here: • Creating a Pattern - P...
The third video works with PC Stitch and can be found here: • Creating a Pattern - P...

Thank you for this great tutorial! I have been trying to evaluate different cross stitch converter software and they are so complicated to figure out! You've made this look so easy. I am trying to convert a more complicated image while preserving more of the detail but haven't been successful. Will try your method and see if I can get a better image output. Thanks again!

I have a question. What is the software you use?

Primarily I use PCStitch; the photo editor I'm using in this tutorial is free software called Gimp

Random question - since you mentioned contacting artists before turning their art into a pattern.... I see lots of (really nice) patterns for sale on Etsy that are clearly taken from the original game art. E.g. the stock image of Link from the video game box art or whatever, and people are selling them, probably without permission from Nintendo. Do they get into legal trouble with the original game company for selling the likeness in the form of a pattern on Etsy? Was just curious since I want to start my own cross-stitch pattern shop on Etsy soon. Thanks!

+nozomiwhitewolf Yes. They could get into legal trouble if Nintendo decided to prosecute them if the pattern was taken directly from their art.

Shops are regularly closed for selling infringing items. The character owners can sue the seller too. it is illegal and a serious issue.

I have received a cease and desist order from Nintendo because of posting fan art before on deviantart. They are super hard on people who copy there stuff. They could have been far harder on me but I was lucky. I’ve heard stories of people being taken to court and sued by Nintendo for it.
