  • The Paraguayan war was a conflict in the mid to late 1800's between Paraguay and the Triple Alliance of Uruguay, Brazil, and Argentina. The end result would be a total destructive and decisive defeat of the Paraguayan nation which would lead to the most deadly armed conflict in South American history with the total population of Paraguay being cut by 60% and the male population by 90%.

Another story south american that needs to become a film: In 1851, the Argentine Confederation declared war on the Empire of Brazil, The Caudillo Juan Manuel de Rosas, said: "Poor Brazilians, I will make your emperor my butler". In 1852, gauchos loyal to Pedro II and Uribez marched triumphantly in Buenos Aires, while Rosas fled in disguise and embarked on an English ship. Before leaving Argentina for England, he said: “It was not the people who brought me down. It was the monkeys, the Brazilians''

In some books it is stated that a small group of men, along with women and children were serving the army by finding weapons, food, etc. These people unfortunately tripped into the Brazilian army and fought what we now know as the Batalla de Acosta Ñu. Shortly after the gunfire started, el Mariscal noticed it and sent 500 men commanded by Bernardino Caballero.
The battle was lost by the Paraguayans, and the kids fought for their lives, not because they were forced. At least that's what this book said.
Another interesting fact: Among the kids in Acosta Ñu there was Emilio Aceval, the kid who would someday be president.

Paraguay only exists today thanks to the Emperor Pedro II of Brazil. After the war, the president of Argentina suggested to Brazil to split Paraguay between the two victorious nations. On the other hand, the Emperor expected that the next enemy (of a possible future war) would be against Argentina and it would be helpful to have the less frontier as possible with Argentina. However, time has proven them to be allies of Brazil in several other issues along time. Today, Brazil have no interest with Paraguai, as they export drugs and weapons by smuggling to Brazil and protect wanted criminals of Brazil and etc.

You only listened to the Paraguayan view of facts , check out the book "Citizen Emperor" I found it free in English for download in the internet (copyright expired , I think that was the government of Australia which uploaded it). From it's 311 pages 145 are about Brazilian external policies and wars , you'll see the truth (or at least another point of view) there

oh yeah, sure, the empire of Brazil should not have attacked Paraguay after Paraguay invaded the Brazilian province of mato grosso, raped and killed the local population, not to mention that the Paraguayan troops kidnapped the governor of the province of mato grosso and killed the same one of hunger in prison, right?
The fault of all this misfortune is Solano Lopez, who dragged this war for three more years even when he had no chance to win, and even sent children and old people to the battlefields ... This bastard invaded mine country and with his army killed and raped my people, and even after all the disgrace that this scourge caused, do I still see people defending this monster?

Francisco Solano Lópes was killed with a spear by a cavalry man know in Brazil as ''Chico Diabo'', roughely translated, as ''Francis the Devil'', he earned 100 cows for the deed, although the order was that Solano was to be taken alive, he also kept the golden sword of Solano, you can see both the Sword and the spear at Rio de Janeiro National Museum.

When the PAR soldiers led by Vicente Barrios stormed few fortified cities inside BRZ provinces the locals were totally unaware of what was goin´down. The neighboring BRZ province of Mato Grosso was such a backward wetland hell hole place, easiest way to get there was by sea, sailing around back taking all way up Parana river. Needless to mention the cholera, yellow fever, malarias diseases one could come across with, if seriously picking the high road, and so did the BRZ empire.
