I didn't have insurance so I just got travel insurance from World Nomads. $443 for 6 months which included any accidents and even dental as long as it was something natural, not a broken crown and such. It's kind of expensive but covered a lot including $1000 of gear theft, with some limitations, so I thought it was worth it. Some people complained that it doesn't cover accidental injury while intoxicated but those people were high all the time.

A sympathetic company, potential bonus and reinstatement possibility? Thats a great tri-fecta. Good thing to remember is that you can re-negotiate your salary / rate at the time of re-interview. Something you couldnt do if you had taken a leave of absence. This is because you have at least that much added value to another employer if you were to leave and go to them. The financial benefit to your current employer is they dont have the added expense to find and replace, on-board and train a new employee. In fact if you get 10-12% increase or better you'd be able to payback you expenses in the year following your thru-hike.

Thank you for sharing great info and insight on everything that goes into planning an AT adventure. I work in health care and if you do purchase health insurance, ask the rep exactly what it covers...ie...copays.... ED vs urgent care, inpt vs obs stays in hospitals, medication coverage if you have to stay in observation at a hospital, iv antibiotics, diagnostic test copays...just to name a few. Like hiking, the more knowledgeable and prepare you are, the better the experience will be.

As far as "getting in shape", that's obviously a good idea. But I've seen so many people vlogging their AT adventure who started out clueless and out of shape. At your age, it will probably be more of a mental challenge as opposed to a physical challenge.
Plus worst thing that could happen is you get eaten by a bear. No worries.

Congrats on your attempt! 2019 will be another great year of stories from the trail! Looking forward to yours! Being a fellow Buckeye and enjoying your channel even before I planned my 2018 Thru hike, I am sure your gear is well thought out. I personally purchased my Palace Tarp Guyline Hardware from watching your video a few years back. The Tarp hammock combo worked better than a tent would have for me and added to my success. This video shows that you are now moving into the late stages of prepping by thinking ahead for when you are on the trail. A very wise thing to do! Just make sure you don’t overthink it and allow the trail to provide. As far as insurance, I didn’t have luck with travelers insurance. Great for cruises and trips to Hawaii; but doesn’t match a six month 2,1901 mile trip. I had wife’s insurance! But if I were you, it would be Obama Care. With luck, you won’t need any medical on trail. I was lucky and never needed a Doc visit. I did train more than most and will I started with fourteen mile days rather than 8-10, I still wasn’t quit the endurance athlete a thru Hiker becomes. I would urge your to Carry a pack up steps or on a stepper machine. I would also stress building the chest up because it will disappear on the trail as your legs do all the work. Good luck and so looking forward to your hike!

I will be there for the AT kickoff and then going to do a mini flip fun hike to Franklin and I am taking a brand new hiker on her first ever hiking trip, so why not the most memorable section on the AT. Then I will flop to my SOBO Hike starting 22June19 from Katahdin. So see you in Southern Maine or in the Whites. Word of caution, beware of big miles as your body can only take so much damage. Once you get hurt it is over so know your body limitations and build up during the first 3 weeks.

Thanks for your work in putting this out for us. As a guy in his mid-40's who fell in love with backpacking in his mid-30's I can attest that now is a much easier time (for you than later) to try a thru hike. Ask your employer if they would be willing to keep you on the plan if you agree to pay both the employee and the employer side of the premiums. It will be expensive, but most likely cheaper than other options. I would encourage you to avoid having a lapse or gap in coverage if possible. Not only could it make obtaining coverage more difficult for you when you finish, depending on your job status when you back, there could be some legal/tax ramifications under the ACA. I don't know all the ends and outs but I would encourage you to research what happens if you go "hopes and dreams" route and don't have coverage while you are on the trail. These are the things that pop out to me as I look at your adventure through the lens of where I am at in my life place right now. Thanks again!

I forgot to order Amazon through you but will tape the link to my computer because I hate to shop and Amazon and I have a close relationship. I hope Gary can come along a few weeks and am excited for you to start. And I would not go without some form of insurance. I am a health care provider and know the cost.

  • @bonefishboards
    @bonefishboards Před 5 lety

Never tell an employer that you are exploring other options unless your case to re-interview and get your job back is a lock. And even then, don't do it. Just thank them for the opportunity that you've had, that you're flattered that they would want to re-interview you after the trip and tell them you are looking forward to seeing them after the trip. I have seen too many bridges burnt to a crisp with last moment flippant remarks on the way out the door. Leave every option open. And looking forward to following your hike!

    Regarding insurance:
Truthfully I abandoned it. I was given a few options via my old job in philly and they were all quite cost prohibitive. In the end I summoned the immortal words behind all good decision making and said fuck it, and went without.
I was fortunate - I never had to go to a doctor. Before I went I had my current doc give me some extra prescriptions (acyclovir) and asked for maybe a one time use of whatever is taken for Lyme (he said call me if it happens).
    Regarding fitness:
Man. Nothing can really prepare you for what’s about to happen to you, but your friend is right. Anything you can do to lessen the shock to your body is worth it. I’ve noticed that most people focus on cardio and stair masters and not convinced at all that that’s right.
Were I to do it again, and I plan to put west in April, I’d focus on strength. Squats, presses, dead lifts, hamstring curls, calf raises and such. The cardio will come but having well developed muscles will help a lot but also maybe prevent IT band issues, the ever present knee pain that many encounter

I’m not wading through the 100+ comments to see if this has been addressed. In a past video when you announced your plan to do the AT, one of your tipping points for your decision was your job had run its course and you were contemplating leaving around the end/first of the year. I couldn’t find the video and I’m sure I will be corrected if I’m wrong. If I am correct, it’s interesting you are entertaining an interview, post hike, for the same company. You did mention you are not settling on that option and are open to other employment opportunities. Whatever you decide, best of luck on your adventure and being a member of the AT Class of 2019. Be safe.

Yes that was in my Who I am and Why I'm hiking video. I feel if I can negotiate a higher salary with my current employer it will make me feel a lot better. When I started with the company there was only 16 people and I was paid accordingly, now there are over 200 people and I have not received a significant increase with such an amazing amount of growth. There is a lot I have added to my job description over the years and I know what I am worth especially after being there so long.

July re-interview? Isn't that going to put a lot of pressure on you to keep hiking fast? I'm not a thru-hiker so take this with a grain of salt, but I'd think it would be best to have no deadline. That way you can stop and enjoy stuff (e.g., towns, hiking with new, slower friends, etc.) and also have time to recover if a medical issue pops up (e.g., a bad knee that needs a week of rest). It would suck to have to end your trip without completing the AT because of a hard, self-imposed deadline.
(Sorry for the negative tone. I'm sure you've thought all of this through and came up with what works best for you. I guess I'm really just curious about how you made the decision to be done in July.)

Honestly I would say flip a coin, yet I have more than you to wager. Screw it if you do not have a ring, then go for it. Live it for the many that have rings, with "pets" and are too scared to just let go and live life. LIVE LIFE ..... LIVE L I F E.... Get it, L I V E L I F E, please do it for the rest of us...... PLEASE

Thanks I guess I can cross that off the list of things to look into. I've gotten a few tips for insurance in this video from past thru hikers.

CZcams money question: When I'm watching your videos, do you get paid more if I don't skip the advertisement after the first five seconds? Also, what if I actually click on the link for the advertisement? Do you get even more money because it registers a "hit" coming from your channel?
I would be willing to not skip ahead or click on the ad if you're getting an extra few cents or an extra dollar or something.

If you watch 30 seconds of the video I receive monetization. I don't think skipping ads has an effect negatively or positively.

I enjoy your videos. Despite what you said, I am sure you will not be missing your birthday.

Re: insurance - if your company offers Cobra, you should get it even though it is expensive. Insurance through the government won't cover much, will have lots of copays, and still be expensive, but it keeps people with assets from going bankrupt if they get cancer, for example. I had a healthcare.gov policy in Virginia that was supposed to cover 90% of a hospital stay and I still ended up paying $5,000 out of pocket for a few days stay. The next year you couldn't even buy a policy in Virginia that covered 90%. Eighty percent was the best offered. So glad I am past that now. Young people say nothing will happen to me, but no one can predict the future.

This is a great idea. I will work it. ER dis this for the last year thru hikers. If he doesn't do it again make one.

It will be time consuming and it helped a lot of us 2018 you tube hikers. But as long as you keep a schedule of how many updates and when the last update etc. I will be chatting to ER in a couple of weeks so will ask if he is doing it again. Doubtful but it is still a great idea for those that are not able to hike to see all sorts of hikers out there. Happy Trails 2019 mate.
