  • We continue with our favourite objects. This time, it is less an object than a whole complex that curator Dr Heino Neumayer has taken a fancy to: The graphic reconstruction of the abandoned Germanic settlement of Klein Köris, barely 30 km south of Berlin. While from the 1st to the 3rd century the region of today's Brandenburg with all its rivers and lakes was a popular settlement area, things look very different from the 4th century onwards.
The countryside is deserted and resembles a wasteland. The former settlements were simply left open and the communities probably moved from here to the southwest into what is now Baden-Wuerttemberg. The Migration Period set in and remixed all the cards in Europe. The remains of such empty settlements in the earth, on the other hand, are a veritable gold mine for archaeologists. With the discovery of these traces, entire villages can be reconstructed and, as in the case of the Germanische Siedlung Klein Köris e.V., experience a true resurrection.
