Tonibell ice cream round in Bletchley in the summer of 1981

  • In the late 70s and early 80s, my Uncle Dave operated a few Tonibell ice cream vans in Bletchley and Milton Keynes (he also ran a burger bar in the greyhound stadium). In the summer holidays I could earn a few extra quid -by working one of the rounds. We didn't sell just ice cream, but also cigarettes, sweets, stockings, paracetamol and other necessities. It wouldn't be uncommon for there to be a queue waiting when I turned up, people who'd heard me coming a few streets away. Use of the hand bell was because, after a certain hour, electronic chimes weren't allowed by the council.

I am an ice cream seller in Tunbridge Wells. Seems strange watching a video of it being done the year I was born but so enjoyed watching this.

No mobile phones, Facebook, instabollocks, twitter, tiktok, wokeness and all the other utter tripe we live with nowadays. Just young kids having a good time together. So glad I was born in 72 so I at least have those happy memories. Today is so bland and crap!
