    If anyone here who's just starting out feels clueless just know that I'm a professional-ish doll artist who's been doing this for about eight years and I still come back to this video again and again because I'm still completely mystified by wig making.

    I prefer a wigs
    1. Because you can change the hair colour when ever you want
    2. It's much easier to wash the hair if it gets mucky or dirty and you don't have to get your doll wet
    3. It's a lot of fun to swap the hair from other doll to doll 😊

      I was wondering if you didn't want too chop off your dolls hair, would their still be a way to use a wig?

    • @MSHARLEYDWOKEAF
      @MSHARLEYDWOKEAF Před 5 lety +22

      @@leslieabla If the doll has straight long hair, I would part down the middle and make two braids, starting at the base of the neck. Tie them together using loose overhand knots all the way to the end and secure with rubberband. This will shorten the hair so you have more flexibility with length. Then make your wig to fit.
      If you want to make a short wig, swirl your doll's hair around the head and pin down or make a little tight fitting cap out of knee-hi stockings. Then make your wig. Have fun. ;)

    This is the most comprehensive tutorial I've seen yet on how to make a sewn doll wig. Thank you so very much for being so thorough.
    It really helps even the bit at the end about styling and parting the hair, because let's face it, you go through all that hard work, get it to look reasonably good and then have absolutely no idea what to do with it or how to get it to look right afterwards!

    So this whole wig thing gave me an idea..... Could you do a tutorial on how to cover up all those holes so you could just have a bald doll without it looking weird?
    Maybe even do a cancer custom?
    My mom has cancer but she hasn't lost her hair beucase the chemo treatment actually almost killed her but she has lost quite a bit of hair.
    Dolls are supposed to be somewhat inspirational or an idol influencing ones life to young females (and males! 😉) like the Barbie!
    I think a Cancer inspired custom would be a great awareness and to show all those poor cancer patients that they are still beautiful and to not stress over their appearance! 😊
    Hmm...... I don't know..... I'll let you decide and figure this out! It was just one of my ideas that I thought I would share! So.... yeah!
    Hope This comment will be seen, if not I'll just repost this on another video lol. XD

    Thank you so much! Tbh I'd rather sew it then glue everything like the wig cap and wefts and gluing the wefts on because I'm too impatient for it all to dry xD! It would take me about two weeks or so because everything takes so long to dry! This would maybe take a week or less depending on school work and everything! thank you again!

    • @jjkitty6882
      @jjkitty6882 Před 4 lety +1

      littlekellye_ if you glue the wefts they will come out of the head and will not stay intact with the dolls cap and if the wig is in a hot space the glue will come off the cap or one day they will come off form the glue being old .

    If you want to do hair that goes away from the face (but could show the jagged ends of the lace), you should *try folding the excess lace back over the elastic* before sewing the layers together. This creates a simple hem, so when you fold the wig cap right side out, the messy ends of the lace are contained within the wig itself. 👌✨
    (Note: I don't actually own BJDs, so I'm not sure how well that works in practice, but I *do* cosplay and make my own clothes/pillows/plushies so I've got some sewing experience, haha.)
    Btw, 10:22 was beautiful. haha. Bless.

    If I knew this in the 90s, I would not shown and made my girls knit the hair back on the Barbies they cut the hair off! It takes the smallest knitting needles (2mm) to do this through the scalp pores of the doll. There are CZcams videos explaining how it is done.
    Your technique is how a real person's wig is made, BTW. Great work!

    This is from 2016 I know, but just in case people haven't thought of it, you could use water soluble stabilizer. It comes in sheets and is made to hold up to machine embroidery or appliqué and then rinsed out afterwards. It holds and reinforces the fabric in the hoop while the machine does its work and helps the stitchwork look nice and even
    .

    Hi, I love your tutorials! I'm planning to make a Hatsune Miku miniature wig for my customized doll... Do you have an advise for making the pigtails? Thank you!

    • @Dollightful
      @Dollightful  Před 7 lety +7

      Hmmm.. the trick would be having lots of hair down her part so that the pigtails look correct. You might have to sew on the wefts in stripes from the crown of her head rather than a spiral... I'd have to think about it, haha!

    • @apprentie_costumiere
      @apprentie_costumiere Před 7 lety +5

      That sound great. I think about doing the wig very short, and leave a space on each side where the pigtails will be, then make a fringe for the front. And finally, sewing on pigtails after making them with the technique you use to complete the spiral in your tutorial... ?

    • @Dollightful
      @Dollightful  Před 7 lety +4

    Dollightful! I need your advice! You are my go-to gal when I have doll-decor problems. So I am thinking of giving this doll I bought at the flea-market some highlights, just to make her more unique and fun. But I am not sure if sharpie is the best way to go. I know it's kinda the cheap rout. I've tried it on some other dolls and so far so good. The hairstyle I have planned for this doll will be permanent so I won't be brushing her much which will likely avoid any ink coming off (if it does), but still tell me your experience on dying doll hair and what do you recommend. It would mean so much if you could replay. Have a great day!! :D

      I would say do it her style
      1. Get dye colour
      2. Have hair
      3. Dip hair into dye
      4. Shampoo and rinse it a couple of times
      5. You're Done!

      Yeah, you can, but I found that it takes a long time and you can only use certain types of hair, but you could go to a thrift shop or a hair store and get ‘real’ hair that would be normally used for extensions. When I used that kind of hair it really worked. I didn’t do a full scale adult sized wig, just a cold sized wig, but it was worth it. I suggest you try it! It’s satisfying like rug hooking!
