Robben Ford is one of my favourite blues guitar players and a trick that I learned from him years ago was his use of the half/whole diminished scale over blues progressions.
Robben likes to use this scale to create tension over the I chord right before the chords change to the IV chord in a 12-bar blues. This scale is great for creating tension because it contains notes that are found outside of unaltered dominant 7th or major chords, which are the chord types most commonly played in 12 bar blues progressions.
In this episode of Spicy Licks, I’m taking you through a Robben Ford inspired diminished blues lick that uses the half/whole diminished scale to create tension over the I chord. This tension is released as soon as the chords move to the IV chord and you land on the root of said chord.
I always like to explain the theory behind the licks in this series, and so I’ll take you through a few key points that you’ll need to understand in order to execute this lick correctly as well as understand how it works.
So, you’re going to learn about the construction of the half/whole diminished scale, what notes from this scale can truly be considered ‘outside’ in the context of a 12 bar blues, and we’ll also touch on timing - it’s absolutely crucial that you understand the timing of this lick because without that, you’ll have a hard time landing on the right notes at the right time.
The bonus content for this lesson - available exclusively to members of bulletproofguitarplayer.com - includes:
Video of the intro solo with TAB (downloadable Guitar Pro & PDF files)
Blues Shuffle in A Backing Track (video & downloadable WAV file)

This is called the perfect lesson: 1- a killer lick 2- an excellent explanation of where the lick comes from 3- an excellent explanation of its context ... 4- great sound 5- played beautifully. Ross, You rule! All the Best, Mordi.
Thank you so much Mordi!
THIS is how all guitar lessons should be done, clear and concise segments using precise language and comprehensive demonstration. Thank you Ross!!
Thank you Frank!
I bought his online Bullet proof theory course a few months ago and trust me, it has to be one of the most well explained, accessible and easy to understand theory courses in the world. The way he step by step. unpacks and demystifies the whole subject is just genius. Good for you Ross and thank you.
Ah thank you so much!
Same here!
This guy just keeps getting better and better. Always a great way of explaining things
J'adore la musique de Robben Ford 🥰 vert nice playin 👍🙏 bonne continuation 🎶🎸♥️
Your licks and teaching style (the tabs help tremendously) has helped me more in the past decade than anyone has, by far! Thank you.
Thank you so much Erik!
True
Thanks Ross . Love your blues licks and theory knowledge 😎🎸👍
Thanks Pete!
OK, Ross. Herer's my message I should have prob'ly shared a while ago. My story is a little different than yours. I used to play guitar totally by ear, learning with others and from others in blues/jazz workshops. Got some playing in jam sessions and pub gigs under my belt - all of that like 20 years ago. Now after having raised my kids a trifle and getting to grips with the professional path I chose, once again I manage to find half an hour or a full hour to sit with a guitar and crack my fingers bending again.
And here comes you with this very distinctive kind of serving attitude that shines through all you do here. It's as if you were running to record a video strip to share some idea that you have designed or learned from somebody. Others have already complimented the composition and flow of your videos. What I would like to pinpoint is that your use of "call and response" technique is splendid - it truly guides watchers' attention.
What I personally love is that you link so many dots from within guitar practice, musicality, music theory, your personal experience growing with a guitar on your lap and kindness towards the listener that you've managed to re-energise old mans' joyful and mindful playing.
Please accept my sincere gratitude for your work.
BTW: Your pronunciation is bliss for a non-native speaker educated in high-brow standard English. For me it is like listening to a fresh and insightful manner of phrasing on an instrument ;-)
Thank you so much! I appreciate the kind words :)
That telecaster is a stunner😮😮
It’s a Fender American Pro 2 in mystic green and rosewood fretboard
Thanks Ross!
Ross is now my favorite electric blues player, because he *gets it*, meaning each of his phrases sounds like it was composed beforehand, it tells a gorgeous little musical story, and both begins and ends in exactly the right place.
Thank You so Much
Thanks for all this info. Cheers!
Another great lesson ross.
Helluva guitar player Ross. Much respect.
Thank you Carl!
I’m sorry bro,
but I’m stealing this!!
And when people say
W O W I’ll give you all the credit !!!
Thanks.
Nice!!! Subscribed🎉🎉
Thanks, Ross! This was helpful in coming up with my own licks. Mainly the last minute or so was useful (to me), the first part, well, ok. (I knew it...but not everyone does). Thanks!
Tasty playing!
Thanks George! You're an awesome player
@@RossCampbellGuitarist Cheers Ross - Loving the videos!
This channel is awesome, just subscribed
Brilliant lesson. I'm a huge Robben Ford fan so this is great in my eyes.
I got your Bulletproof 1 last December and with these lessons I have improved my playing a lot, cheers from Mexico!
Thank you Gerry! I love hearing that :)
I've recently been re-inspired to break through the intermediate plateau and started scouting CZcams to supplement my in-person lessons. I've watched hundreds of videos at this point and Ross is really one of maybe two people I aspire to play like. The lessons and explanations are just fantastic and inspiring. The licks are unique and impressive, but not totally out of reach either. Signed up and waiting for the 2.0 course to be released. Thank you for creating all this valuable content Ross!
I appreciate that Matt thank you
Thank you for this great lesson.!!!! Keep rocking!!
Excellent work Ross, thank you for this.
Robben Ford is a longtime favorite of mine, you’ve certainly captured his feel and phrasing in this lesson.

I'd probably say it's my favourite as well!
@@RossCampbellGuitarist Awesome!

Great explanation and just about kept with it. Stood in front of Robben and Larry at the Jazz Club a while back. Your vid is lifting the lid for me!
This is fantastic, thank you!

Nice one! TrueType RF manner, great explained!
Love your playing.
Really great lesson Ross. Well shot, lit, clear graphics, concise information well explained at the right pace and demonstrated brilliantly with a great guitar tone. I’ve watched Robben Ford’s lessons and didn’t understand it as well as I do now. Top job all round.
Thanks so much Alan!
Amazing! Great great teacher !
Thank you Lucian!
Well done Ross
Thanks!
Great playing and lesson! Thank you so much! Greetings from Brazil.
Nice vid Ross. Love the counting advice. I really struggle with that. I've got a few nice SRV Solos down. Was hoping to loop and perform one or 2 live but my timing sucks!
Finally understood it! Thank you…great lesson!
Awesome Brad, thanks!
Once again another epic video!!! Keep em coming brother!!! Rock on!! Cheers!!🎸 🤘🏽

Thank you Paul!
Man Ross. You get better and better. Great stuff...
Thank you!
Great lesson. You've got Robben Ford's blues sound nailed -- and I always tried to figure it out but couldn't quite get it. Thanks Ross.
Thanks so much Tim!
Now I have material to study for the next month... Thanks again Ross!
Thanks Richard, enjoy! :)
Nice lick
Cool
Robben Ford is such a fantastic musicien and guitarist, great to get an insight into one of his signature scales for want of a better expression.Great lesson as usual, TAB is very helpful and nice Telecaster, many thanks for this one, i'll be learning the whole solo with pleasure, great job !
Thanks so much!
Thanks for putting soooo much effort into these. A resource like this back in the sixties would have been useful, to say the least. I had "Mel Bay Guitar Method Grades 1-7". It was wretched. Never practiced and sight-read everything (poorly). All the teacher did was puff on Winstons and write the fingerings over the chords. Put me off of playing until I was 17. I'll see myself out.
Thanks for the delicious lick, please do a lesson on playing over minor blues changes
What a great video. Super well explained. I can hear shades of Larry Carlton's solo in Kid Charlemagne
Nice, Ross!
Thank you!
What I like most of you is your ability to put theory into pratice. It's not that easy. Most of us learn a new lesson and forget in a couple of days cause we lack the ability to master to new element and put it in our playing.
Gorgeous guitar.....✨👍
Thanks!
@@RossCampbellGuitarist Which Model?
Tasty!
Other than the playing, which is great, I like to point out that the format and presentation of the video itself is very good. It's all I want in an instructional video: accessible, clear, structured, bite-sized, the illustration of the concept is good (we can hear it, we can read it, and we can use the video to navigate - the shot helps), and gives enough information to help us develop our own ideas.
Thanks so much Andre. I'm happy to hear that :)
I caught a glimpse of the title 'Robben Ford' as I moved my phone. I had my headphones on as I was working & the vid started playing. I thought hmm that sounds a lot like Ross though I thought it was Robben of course. Then you started your introduction & I realised it was one of your vids. We can't escape our own peculiar styles can we though we do take a lot from each other?
🎉🎉🎉
I had a VCR tape of Robbin Ford back in the late 80's teaching licks. i was amazed by his flawless playing. So glad you made a video honoring his playing. He was a very creative in his use of theory mixed with blues!!! You definitely have his feel down cold!!👍👍👍👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🤝
Thank you!
@@RossCampbellGuitarist you should do a podcast with Tim Pierce, i see you playing on many number one songs as he has!! superb musical minds think alike, i feel it would be a huge success. just a thought...😇
@@americusdomesticus8176 I have an interview with Tim on my channel and have also appeared on his :)
@@RossCampbellGuitarist i was unaware, glad to hear that!! i will search for it, thank you!!
Great stuff presented here. I love Robben Ford. I hit like. What was the song on the outro?
I love theories. Keep them coming. Love from India ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you!
Excellent playing during the intro
Thank you!

Hi Ross I just brought your book yesterday is this all in the book thanks
Great lesson, Ross. I've been stealing Robben's licks since he put out Talk To Your Daughter, he's a wealth of really tasty and practical ideas. You obviously have great influences!
Thank you!
Just discovered your channel recently, great lessons which are well understood and explained. Lovely playing over the opening jam too. And you're a fellow Scot! Nice one Ross, liked and subscribed, I'll be back! Thank you
Thank you!
I love all of this style playing. Please write some music Ross. You are very talented. Songs move everything
Thank you! I'll get around to it one day
Hey Ross great video. This is a pretty specific request, but maybe you could do a lesson on the lick at :30 of Robben Ford's new song Blues for Lonnie Johnson. Not really sure what he's doing there or why it works but such a cool lick that's stuck with me.
I have the exact same guitar strap. I feel special 😂
Love the EB straps!
is that a Casio lcd display? Great lesson too!
Wish I could do this.
Practice with focus and consistency and you'll likely surprise yourself with what you can achieve. You've got this 👊
Thanks Ross - great lesson! Had the pleasure of producing a concert with Robben Ford and the Blue Line in Glasgow in 1992. Guess you were a little too young to have been there!
Thanks Ian! Haha that's awesome man. I would have been roughly minus three years old :)
@@RossCampbellGuitarist Aye! Thinking back makes me feel old - doesn't seem that long ago I was 18! Love your playing Ross and your teaching style is very accessible. Obviously, the live scene has taken a serious beating of late but do you plan any live dates at all? Not sure if you have a band at the moment? If it wasn't for the pandemic Josh Smith - who I'm sure you'll know - was booked to play Aberdeen last year. The tour has been rescheduled but with fewer dates and the only Scottish date is in Edinburgh in October. I'm going to try to get a ticket. If you're there, maybe you could sit in?
what kinda guitar is this? sending u lots of love!
