  • We're on a family trip to central California and making a stop in the Capital of Sacramento. It's a beautiful city to walk through, with lots of lovely trees and quiet side walks. We start out at the capitol building and make our way over to the cathedral and then back over through the areas close to the river and Old Sacramento. Many stores and windows were boarded up, I assume due to the social justice protests but many restaurants and hotels were still open. We hope you enjoy this lovely virtual walk.

    Wikpedia info:
    Sacramento is the capital city of the U.S. state of California and the seat and largest city of Sacramento County. Located at the confluence of the Sacramento River and the American River in Northern California's Sacramento Valley, Sacramento's estimated 2019 population of 513,625 makes it the sixth-largest city in California and the ninth-largest capital in the United States. Sacramento is the seat of the California Legislature and the Governor of California, making it the state's political center and a hub for lobbying and think tanks. Sacramento is also the cultural and economic core of the Sacramento metropolitan area, which at the 2010 census had a population of 2,414,783, making it the fifth-largest in California.
    Before the arrival of the Spanish, the area was inhabited by the Nisenan, Maidu, and other indigenous peoples of California. Spanish cavalryman Gabriel Moraga surveyed and named the Rio del Santísimo Sacramento (Sacramento River) in 1808, after the Blessed Sacrament, referring to the Eucharist in the Catholic Church. In 1839, Juan Bautista Alvarado, Mexican governor of Alta California, granted the responsibility of colonizing the Sacramento Valley to Swiss-born Mexican citizen John Augustus Sutter, who subsequently established Sutter's Fort and the settlement at the Rancho Nueva Helvetia. Following the American Conquest of California and the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo, the waterfront developed by Sutter began to be developed, and incorporated in 1850 as the City of Sacramento. As a result of the California Gold Rush, Sacramento became a major commercial center and distribution point for Northern California, serving as the terminus for the Pony Express and the First Transcontinental Railroad.
    Sacramento is the fastest-growing major city in California, owing to its status as a notable financial center on the West Coast and as a major educational hub, home of California State University, Sacramento and University of California, Davis. Similarly, Sacramento is a major center for the California healthcare industry, as the seat of Sutter Health, the world-renowned UC Davis Medical Center, and the UC Davis School of Medicine, and notable tourist destination in California, as the site of the California Museum, the Crocker Art Museum, the California State Railroad Museum, the California Hall of Fame, the California State Capitol Museum, and the Old Sacramento State Historic Park. Sacramento International Airport, located northwest of the city, is the city's major airport. Sacramento is known for its evolving contemporary culture, dubbed the most "hipster city" in California. In 2002, the Harvard University Civil Rights Project conducted for Time magazine named Sacramento "America's Most Diverse City".

      @@CityWalks Yep! Old Sac is nuts on weekends or if there's anything special going on downtown. Most of the main downtown core is currently office buildings and state properties but just a few streets east in Midtown and East Sacramento there are a lot of small streetscapes and alleyways that get a lot of foot traffic too. Nightlife is also really great in Sacramento

    Thanks for the walk-through in downtown Sacramento. I was raised in Sacramento, although there was no historic downtown then-it was just downtown. I was there during the 1955 flood, which was probably one of their worst, if not their worst, floods in modern times. In fact, we also had to abandoned our rental home to make way for Interstate 5 that same year.
    This one hour walk showed me more of downtown Sacramento than I'd seen during the 15 years I lived there. Of course, I didn't live in downtown Sac, but in one of the the areas that is now considered one of the worst places to live in the city.
    In watching another video about Sacramento, it turns out that the average rental property goes for a mere $1,800 a month in the city. So, while the apartments you deemed as not very upscale, they probably rented for at least that much, if not more, being located in the middle of downtown. And the average house in Sacramento sells for over $360,000, according to that other video. And Sac is considered one of the cheaper places to live in California-cheap being a relative term.
    This is also the first time I've seen Tower Bridge raised. Of course, I wasn't in downtown all that much. And Sacramento has been a port city for quite some time, originally established in 1947 (which surprised me), with the name changed to the Port of West Sacramento in 2008, having assumed managerial responsibility two years earlier. It's 79 nautical miles NW of San Fran.
    Again, thanks for the trip down sort-of memory lane. I always enjoy the pans, by the way, whether walking or hiking.

    Hi Henry,
    Thanks for the tour. I’ve not been to Sacramento. My two cents about moving the camera around...it doesn’t bother me at all when you pan left, right, up or down. I haven’t fallen off the treadmill yet. I don’t notice anything distracting about the stabilization either. I love to see so many places I’ve never visited. It sure beats staring at the walls of my garage! Happy travels!

    So much in this video. First I just want to say that I like the looking at things along the way. Elsewise it could be taking a walk anywhere. It is vey interesting to look at things as you go by them, and to learn a little about them. Secondly, I hate to think of the boarding up of those old wooden buildings. They usually board up because they expect the riots, looting, and fires. That area would not survive that kind of activity. Then too, I am glad you and your family (and us) got to see Sacramento before it is possibly ravaged downtown where all the things were boarded up. OR, maybe there was already something that happened that caused the windows to have to be boarded up. it is so disheartening. I hope Newsom provides adequate protection for it all. You guys stay safe. Oh yes, the cities with the tall buildings can't provide adequate sunshine to sustain trees. Something has to be done about that.

    • @CityWalks
      @CityWalks  Před 4 lety

      Hi there and thanks for the wonderful comment and your concern. I think the buildings were boarded up as a precaution. I saw little to no actual damage or sign of any kind of rioting nor did I feel unsafe at anytime in California, other than some fires. I think what we see in the news has been hyped for ratings and clicks to a large degree. Still, it pays to be aware and careful -H

    Sacramento is nice! It’s growing so fast I think it’ll pass Fresno in the next 5 years or so to become California’s 5th biggest city. Given that so many people are leaving the Bay Area for Sacramento Region. It’s population is now at 521,000 and Fresno is only 538,000 but growth has been so much slower for Fresno.
