- Rob from ASUS compares the boot times for the ASUS U36SD-A1 with 640GB HDD ($899) vs. the ASUS U36SD-XA1 with 160GB SSD ($1099).
Both notebooks have otherwise identical specifications with 2nd-Gen Intel Core i5-2410M processors, NVIDIA GT520M graphics, and 4GB of DDR3 1333MHz memory. - Věda a technologie
that time when booting up meant you get your morning coffee :D
faster boot means more jerkin before starting work
@@GeraltOfRivia99 🤣🤣🤣
Not ony for booting up also programs loads slower

I would open chrome, go to the kitchen to make a sandwich then comeback and it conveniently opens the time get back
When he said 2nd gen Intel I realized this video is from 2011 omg
hate the space gap between the screen and the notebook, floating hinges are so ugly

HDD is the older ways while SSD will be the Future, Its just an advancement in Tech.
Same 😂

What Im saying is, m.2 isnt a storage type, its just an interface for ssds.
@@_Haadi oh alright
I have an SSD in my desktop, but was wanting to see how well one would perform in my older laptops .. Definitely looks like it would breathe some new life into them :) Thanks for the video..
I love you. I'm going to end up getting a SSD since I work a lot on my pc. It will save a lot of time for sure! Those extra seconds does add up like mad.
So why is it in my recommend after 7 years?
Because you were recently watched videos about laptop-technology-drives etc. And by recently we mean even 3 months before the recommendetion.
Because SSDs are cheaper now, I guess...

I was wondering if SSD's were really that much faster. You've made it very clear to me that they are. Thank you for posting, your video was very helpful.
M.2 drives are much MUCH faster
i miss the old startup on HDD and searched for this video to relive those memories.
Wow, I never thought the speed difference can be that huge.
Does it effects network performances also ? Like downloading and all
when you open up the program your using, for example in my case photoshop, is there a difference with performance, ie: the 5400rpm runs slower using photoshop than the SSD drive...thanks
If your building a PC, get a 120Gb SSD for your applications and a 1TB HDD to store your photos, movies, games, etc.
should only set you back $150
horrible advice, save games especially on SSD the load times ingame will decrease dramatically
Wartooth82 everything on my pc is in total 120GB which includes 6 games I regularly play. I don't understand how people can use so much space, I only have programs and games installed I actually use, unused ones are instantly deleted eventhough I have 2TB of storage, that's why I will buy a 256GB SSD for my new built gaming rig
Z7 Most people use up so much space because of slow internet. If I got bored of a game that was 20GB+ for a few weeks and uninstalled it, I wouldn't wanna wait forever for it to install again. Most games these days are 10-50GB big now ( especially AAAs )
Z7 The Evil Within is around 44 GB, Shadow of Mordor also around 40 GB. You can't store much of games these day in single SSD with OS installed.
Rakashin7 what would you put in the SSD?
I already knew the direction I was leaning. I own a Macbook air, and I know the difference that the SSD makes. This just makes me want one even more for my HP laptop. That is definitely going to breath some new air into that computer, and I cannot wait for it.
Going to change some hardware on my work laptop: 500gb ssd with an external 1tb hdd, 16 or 32 gb of ram ddr4 .. I use it for postproduction such as lightroom, Photoshop and adobe premiere pro.. do you think it's enough for all this?
My desktop motherboard has 2 SATA 2 & 2 SATA 3 slots. Currently both the SATA 3 slots are taken by the hard drive and the optical drive. I was thinking of adding an SSD and replacing the optical drive with the SSD and connect the optical drive in the SATA 2 slot. Will the optical drive work then??
SSD are the best upgrade you can do for speed, my old ever reliable Thinkpad was running a 320gb HD since I bought it but it's always sounded like a bag of spanners and slow, so recently upgraded to an Intel SSD and the difference is night and day, the laptop is ridiculously quiet now and super fast.
In 2018 no one should be without a SSD, especially in a laptop. But even still, if you took a computer from 2011 and put a SSD from 2018, it almost brings new life to that machine.
To get the speed difference, do you need both photoshop and the psd file to be on the SSD or can you have photoshop on the ssd and the file on an hdd?
Hi Asus NA. I would like to correspond with you about an issue I am having. it seems my hard drive is suffering due to me getting emotional. it was working very super fast and speedy until I damaged it. I tried fixing the head off of the platter which it was stuck I've run test and the arm would not go back and forth now would my asus start at all just booting noises. what should I do?
You can tell this video is old as fuck because the 120gb ssd is over $1000
Those are the prices including the laptop.
In 2011 you were still paying at least $400-$500 for a standard size (120gb-250gb) ssd
+YaMoonSun
Yeah I know but not $1000 in this case since it comes with the laptop.
i love the way you said it
not 400-500 USD. I payed about 200 euros for my first 120GB SSD. That's about 250 USD. This was 5 years ago.
HDD's still have a long life as they have bigger capacities but when SSD's catch up on terms of price and capacity, Good bye HDD :P
Maybe true. But for most desktops out there you can have two hard-drives. I just use SSD for most used programs/game/O.S and my HDD for storage.
For my laptop, I have the SSD installed internally as the main-drive and a HDD in the ultrabay for storage usage.
what a great prediction!
HDD has the longevity factor.....and I don't see SSD touching that, using cheap Chinese parts.
how bout now
@@dayblue4244 You can sell your laptop and HDDs to get plenty of SSD Storage
I was hoping to find info on the X555LB model and whether you can upgrade the HDD to SSD. I found the lack of information on that model concerning, but aside, could a representative address this question?
I've been shopping for a PC with SSD for about a few days now. I've been seeing a lot of computers that have a low gb SSD for a OS and have a high capacity HDD for additional intermal storage. Is there a benefit to this type of system or Should I just run a full SSD (like 1tb). This desktop will be used solely for creating multimedia.
How much does the number of processor cores play into response time? Since the i5 is about $100 more than an i3, I think I might buy an i3 for a new build and use the money I'm saving to buy a SSD. I don't plan on doing any gaming or real processor-heavy tasks. Any thoughts?
Go for the i5 you will see a big difference in processing power and just save for an SSD to see an even biggeer difference!
Loading speed is probably not "CPU-limited".

I want an SSD, but how the hell do you compensate for the low storage?
+BattlefrontZero Have two drives. You can replace your optical disc drive (which almost nobody uses nowadays) with an adapter for a hard drive. The best solution would be placing the SSD in the default place where the HDD was and put the HDD in the adapter, so now you have the system and bigger applications on the SSD and the rest on the HDD
Is 1tb low
***** Gotcha. Thanks for the info! Building my own PC soon, so I'm scared lol.
Defcon 5 1 TB HDD is like 50 bucks now. Dirt cheap and a lot of space. 1 TB SSD will cost you though.
Yes, of course, SSD are still expensive, and also, for storage, you are better off with an HDD anyway. And 1TB is more than enough, I myself have only 500GB and it's enough for me! As for the SSD, at least, 120GB, but I'd recommend 250GB, because that way you know that you have plenty space for all your programs and games, maybe! And also, a 250GB SSD costs around 90€ over here, so it's not crazy expensive either!
What do you think about Samsung EVO 850 250GB? Or some other suggestion for 250Gb SSD?
so what If I want to store everything in HDD because it has more room instad of my ssd C drive? In that case will things still go faster or my SSD will just help start up faster?
Ahhh Windows 7, my favorite.

What a lot of people focus on is boot up speed, and snappy opening of programs, but its also important to consider such things as processing large video files, or moving large files across hard drives, etc. Most of the lower priced SSDs have very poor performance when copying large amounts of data after the cache is full. In other words, its designed for less than 9 second transfers, and if you go above that, the SSD moves at a snails pace, and is actually slower than a fast HDD. Nobody mentions this, because of marketing reasons.
Does somthing like "fast HDD" exist? lol. Let me know where. Until then, I stick to my slow SSD:)

which hard disk inside first one... which starts faster ???? ssd or hdd
Are you supposed to update the Firmware for the SSD as soon as you install one?
The only thing I'm concerning is the life, read/write cycles, will SSD die fast compared to traditional HDD?
Don't want a sudden death to lose all my stuffs...
dude the life of ssds are same as of hdds it can certainly hold up your data upto years and years to come.
SSD's are more reliable and have a longer life expectancy since it's not mechanical, it's like a USB key, those things never die lol (a proper quality one)
Dany NBA I've a 120gb hdd on my pc since 2005 working like 5-15 hours per day (a lot of times i don't shut down the computer at night, dowloading , rendering things etc.) and it still works perfectly...
77TheEnd77 i never said HDD's were bad, but they're mechanical so one day they WILL die, it could be after a year or after 15..

I don't think people get it the difference between the two. SSD are way faster in transfer rate and acces time, consume less power and is shock resistant. It's all electronics. A good desktop HDD have 150 MB/sec transfer rate (a lot less for laptop hdd) while a good SSD can saturate a modern sata 3 interface, about 550MB/sec read/write. Acess time for an HDD is about 12 msec in very best circonstance while SSD have typical .1 msec. Don't forget that HDD get fragmented all over the disk easily which prolongue horribly the acces time into seconds while there is files fragmentation on an ssd, it make no difference in access time. All memory cells have the same figure.
There is no comparaison, SDD are better then HDD in every way. The only hold up now is the cost of an SSD memory cell (nand) which is higher but has been fallen dramatically from the last years. So in 2 years the HDD is a dead horse for most computer except data center.
The best scenario for now is having an ssd for windows and applications with a regular hdd for data storage. However this is out of question for a laptop.
I've upgraded my laptop with an SSD and the difference is huge. Can't go back to HDD now.
***** So when downloading things off the internet like mmorpgs and stuff will the SSD get me a lot more mb/s?
Yeah, but SSD really begin to help on the slower older PC. i mean, try adding a SSD to a pentium.

Folks in the comments, Ideally you want a computer with 2 drives, one SSD for windows and all your apps and one HDD for your file storage, if you have a crappy laptop that only has one drive slot then Western Digital has what you need it's a 1TB hard drive and 120GB SSD in the single enclosure and runs about 200 bucks US.
You could just use your optical bay for your hdd and the hdd bay for your ssd.
Very nice sir. Thanks for parallel Demo
What if I have both an ssd and hdd in my machine? Is it because windows was installed on the ssd?
This video should of made it clear that they are comparing the SSD with a 5400rpm HDD which is super slow lets be honest. I upgraded to a 7200rpm drive recently and my laptop is now plenty fast enough for loading everything and very respectable boot times. So the price/speed trade off between an SSD and a 7200rpm HDD is one worth taking into account because for the price of a 120GB SSD you can get a 750GB (or more) 7200rpm HDD which is only a little slower.
My advice... wait for the SSD prices to tumble in 2014. By 2015 the prices will be perfect. But if you can't wait then 7200rpm HDD's are in the sweet spot right now.

Captain Falcon prices havent gone down anyways so wtv 😂
its 2019 now and nothing has changed
what if a laptop has dual storage .... -.-
Whats the issue? You can have a fast boot drive, and a slower but larger and cheaper storage drive. Or two SSDs in Raid 0 for two times the speed.
Is it the same, using an external HDD to compensate for the low storage of the SSD?
I have asus K55VM laptop with 1 TB HDD & it's bootup time is more than a minute & multitasking is not that good also although it packs 3.3[turboboosted] 3rd gen core i7+8GB 1600mhz ddr3 ram. Will it's performance improve if I replace hdd with ssd. Last but not the least are hdd with inbuilt ssd like wd black useful or pure ssd are useful.
Every ssd is different, motherboard/ports also play a role. From the moment I hit the power button, windows loads up in less than 10 seconds, it's blazing fkn fast. Needless to say, games load fast as hell. It's kind of pointless to get it if you play a load-once type of game like cs go or something but it's extremely good for games that require long loads or constant loading like total war series. Waiting 2 goddamn minutes for a total war load was lame, now it takes less than 15 secs.
I wonder if this dude is alive
if i boot up using the ssd, will it create a boot folder in the ssd and keep the boot files in the boot folder?

which hard disk performance is best use in desktop.. ssd or surveillance ? Tellme
I dont recommend an ssd. Only a small boot time differance and program boot time differance. NOT WORTH IT
Actually it can also help with things like moving big files (like 4-7GB or bigger) and also in big games that have many things to load. But anyway an HDD can get the job done well anyway.
Since a quality ssd like an evo 120gb is only about 90$ atm, i think it could certainly be a good thing to spend money on
my friend has an hdd, he has to wait like 15 minutes every time he boots his computer so he keeps it on almost 24/7.
Hjalmar Nyman he probably has a cluttered up computer, ive done some testing and my HDD boots completely in 39 seconds on average
Dany NBA only $90?? You can get 2 tb hdd for $90
As a gamer, I'd never bother with an SSD unless it were large enough to hold at least most of my games. Just having a faster booting OS is NOT worth the money, IMO.
turbofanlover get an ssd to put your OS on and keep your hdd for your games :P
Or just buy a really big ssd... but thats expensive
Kontained Khaos Yeah, like I said, it's not worth it to me to spend the money just so that Windows runs faster.....that's just not that big a deal, IMO. Now, a 500 Gig ssd WOULD be appealing to me....but, it still typically costs well over 200 bucks where I live (Canada). If and when it goes to say 100 bucks.....I'd probably grab it. :)
turbofanlover well it's not only faster boot but also very fast file transfer speeds. so if you copy something to the ssd it will be amazingly fast. (300-500 Mbps)
***** Again...that's not that important to me....if my games can't fit....it's just not worth it, IMO....until the higher capacity ssd prices drop some more.
***** Well, first of all.....you DO NOT need an ssd to be a "real gamer".....that's just dumb, dude. And, second of all, if you had read my other statements, you would likely have figured out that I would indeed consider getting a 500 gig ssd that could hold all of my games.....WHEN THE PRICE COMES DOWN SOME MORE......I have no intention of spending 200ish bucks (CDN) for an item that I do not consider to be really that big a game-changer to my overall gaming experience. But, if you have the cash and believe it's worth it at this point....go ahead.....to each his own.

Are all ssd provide same speedy performance? I'm looking for a new laptop and I can see 150 gb ssd and 225 gb ssd with 1 Tb hdd. I never considered ssd until I learned about the speed
The amount of GB just tells you how much fits on the drive. In the 2 options you are providing, I'd go for the 225GB SSD + 1Tb HDD. A 120GB SSD + 1Tb HDD works aswell. Just make sure you put windows on the SDD this is what is mostly making it feel so fast. I recommend the extra HDD for file storage, things where speed doesn't really matter.
Can you make a comparison of same capacity storage like 640gb hdd to 640gb ssd if possible..
Thanks for the great comparison video!
Great, since I installed SSD. I regret why I did not install it earlier and saved hours of time wastage. Is their anything else which can improve desktop speed besides upgrading from HDD to SDD?
