- Just a little side note on the RED footage and why it looks less colourful and very flat compared to the Leica.
Sat down and looked at the stuff we shot we realised that we pretty much had the wrong settings the most of the time as we just walked right out before the guys had time to walk us through everything. So it was just in the end we figured a bunch of stuff out, so what you see here is about 15% of what this camera can do, kind of wish we could go back and shoot the stuff all over to show the full potential of the camera! haha Soooo sick to work with though, just a crazy look unlike anything else in the Vlog world and once we get used to one we are 100% sure that it would be insanely cool, and thats what we love! Took us 150 days to find the right grade for the Leica, so to expect to get it right after using it for 10 mins might be a little to optimistic even for us! Practice makes perfect! ;-)

Your cameras already pump out some GREAT images. A RED would just add more work in editing and colour grading! RED is THE camera company out there, but you're already showing the cleanest image amongst all bloggers Jon! Spend that money on some cine lenses! Maybe even another trip!

Btw, I think that the RED footage is much easier to grade than some 8-bit DSLR footage. Also the codec is much more easier and smoother to work with (the downside is of course HUGE file size).

I don't think Marcus bothered color grading the Red Footage. I'm sure if he had, it would have looked much much better than the leica

The Red sensor has 15 stop dynamic range; that's better than the Leica SL but yeah DR is not the only important thing, there are things to consider like latitude, low light performance, color profile, auto focus, lens selection, standard workflow for editing etc. His vlog with Leica's already great.
He is not on the wrog setting! He is shooting in LOG! And if he graded the shot he graded it for rec709. Therefore dull colors.
I've owned a RED Dragon (sold it a few weeks ago). I've owned RED cameras since 2008 when I got the first RED ONE. No doubt it's an amazing camera but vlogging on that really IS the stupidest idea I've heard in a long time. First of all - the file sizes are enormous, it eats through batteries like the REDBRICK battery you had in the belt clip in about 2 hours and you can't fly with those batteries. You'd need to buy 100 Wh batteries. Also - it's not exactly a great performer under low light and the media cards are SUPER expensive... But, by all means get one and you'll probably find you'll be shooting more on the Leica cameras after a while because of the reasons stated above - and then you'll keep the RED around for those extra special occasions ;-) Editing 6K RAW files is also a bit more time consuming than what the LEICA cameras deliver, although that can be solved by investing in a fast Thunderbolt drive and faster computers. I really wouldn't recommend editing R3D files on a Macbook Pro day in and day out.
A lot of colour grading to do for Marcus... The RAW footage of the RED is just not as good as the Leica, it needs to processed.
Anche secondo me sarebbe uno spreco e una seccatura portarla in giro per il peso. Poi loro per fare color grading applicano semplicemente un lut (osiris mi pare) . Io gli consiglierei una blackmagic production camera 4k, super 35mm molto più leggera e compatta senza doversi portare in giro quel mega pacco batteria. L'unica cosa è che non fa gli slowmotion.
yes, what's with the contrast of the RED footage? It was very flat.
Speaking of color grading. They should really check out DaVinci Resolve. It is insane for color grading as well as editing. I started on FCP then switched to Premiere Pro and recently checked out DaVinci Resolve and so far my mind is blown.
Double D yeah, but as I was saying above in Italian they just apply luts. I'm not sure they are able to do proper color grading in davinci or they have enough time everyday to do it. Also, I think a red would be a waste in the way they would use it. A blackmagic Production super 35 would be more appropriate for them.
You can add Luts in DaVinci too. They have some Luts built in as well. but DaVinci is the best editor for color grading. hands down. if you are an editor go check it out. they have a free version that is as good as the paid version. I promise you will love it. and it is so easy to learn it. or atleast watch a crash course on it here on youtube.

1st what's important in vlogs is the content no so much the camera quality. You can have the best camera but if you don´t have content then bye. You can have the example with shmee 150 the best place to use good videos is with cars and the best cameras he uses are the Sony's plus that battery with swiming shorts I would like to see that.
100% agree. Good cameras does not replace good content, but we are aware of this and know that if we have a RED we have to focus even more on content to make sure that this is not a daily music video. I did that last year with Ski videas and I know that it does not work as well as a daily life vlog does. So 100% with you, but I still love sick cameras! ;-)
People are intersted in daily vlogs when you interact with new cool people like Max, Richard etc not a documentary about your life, thats what red camera will look like. But sure if you can prove me wrong then im happy. :)

I bought a canon 600mm lens (expensive, yes, but so worth it), it makes one push harder to create amazing content - and the fact wildlife photography does not work without something as powerful and far reaching. The only way to really tap into the camera's full potential is by putting it in Marcus's hands and let him run wild! Can't wait to see the end product. Keep up the best vlogging channel.

Dont want to be that guy, but i actually dont like the quality of the picture made by the red camera. I think the leica does a better job at making good videos..
The RED footage came out looking pretty flat, but that's just the standard log of the project files. I think you'd find that if they did a grade on it, it would looks amazingly good.
Read the description, they explain. But also I think they just made a terrible job at color grading that footage
the red shots in raw form so you can change the picture quality, for example,
a yellow car can be changed to a green ore blue. plus shooting in RAW format gives a Muche more depth in contrast exposer and again more color but need to adjust in a editing softwere
Leica cameran have a fixed color setting
and require not be adjusted, it is therefore red cameran filmed not look as good as the leica
The Leica footage looks better because Jon & Marcus have nailed the grade. The RED outputs what is called a Log file, which is FLAT as shit. That way you retain more data and can really push your grades around.
for cinema the red camera's is where it is at
bit of explanation for the doubtful . the red camera shoots raw footage and it appears flatter in purpose because it has to be processed /color graded into post production. it's a completely different work flow.

In order for you guys to be the best, you have to push the boundaries for what was thought possible for the vlog. Not to long ago people thought it was crazy to vlog on an SLR then casey proved them wrong. If u start blogging with a RED camera, you'd be doing the impossible.

About the "Color-Problems" everybody is complaining in the comments... A RED is shooting in a flat setting so you can restore all the details and colors just as you want them later in post. If you color grade it correctly it would even look better than the Leica.

Hey Jon and Marcus, i think the Red is not really convenient for you guys. I would personally prefer to focus on the content more than the quality of the vlog. The quality is already good enough,. To see anyone vlog with a Leica is unique, so stick to it (i hope)

The leica is so mush better! Cons : The red footage just looks grey and the colors are not popping at all. And imagine going to the beach and places like bali,you would not want to walk around with a belt and a huge battery+ It would be expensve so you had to take care of it too much!Pros : image quality is insane and looks pro.

The Red footage is not colorgraded, thats why it's grey. Because it shoots the image very flat to retain color information in both the shadow and the highlights.
Men med en vlogg ska det gå så snabbt som möjligt att color gradea och mer tid att skapa innehåll till videon, om man skapar stora videor eller kort filmer så spelar det inte lika mycket roll och då är den extra kvalitén värt det med RED kameran.
Watch Taylor Swift's blank space video. It was completely filmed with a red camera and look how awesome it turned out. The settings have to be adjusted that's all.

DAAAAAMN it looks sooo good on the RED and cine lens .
Mobile and 4K raw footage = not so good.... I am nowhere near in term of gear, filming editing, etc. but I can tell you 4k takes alot of space. I have a Lumix G7 that doesnt shoot RAW and editing 4K in Final Cut Pro X is fine but expect to fill up your SSD really fast. I am not sure your MacBook pro will handle it in Premiere ... You will need a really fast external mobile storage solution as well plus some kind of NAS to backup. Don't forget that shooting RAW requires color grading everytime as it is flat like probably some of the shot you included in this video. You could always do like me, shoot in 4K but downscale to 1080p in editing but kind of waiting the 30k you plan to invest. A less expensive solution would be GH4 it has some Leica tech in it (a logo on the camera at least) and could adapt your lenses on it and have an active stabilizer as well.

This particular red camera doesn't cost 50k. Red is modular so you have to buy multiple components to make it function like a proper camera. This is a Red Raven which is actually Red's most cost effective camera. The body alone I believe is around 6 grand, but to make it a function camera it would probably cost more like 10 grand.

Must have come to the wrong channel. I thought this was the Jon Olsson channel but everyone else seems to think otherwise. Also missed where they stated that they wanted to buy the camera because the content would be so much better.
It was not that long ago after reading a comment about being compared to Casey that Jon was humbled and said that what Casey was doing was awesome. In fact in VLOG 137, both he and Marcus comment on Casey again - "Awesome" being the word they use. All I was trying to get at is that if you watch Casey like Jon obviously does, it's about the story (content) being told. A good camera helps to bring the story to life, but if the story isn't good you end up with something that might be visually appealing but falls flat. As an example in a bigger sense, just go watch Batman v Superman and tell me I'm wrong.

Even though it shows you are unhappy with your back in a general manner (without necessarily having to speak about it), your attitude getting through it is contagious. I myself am dealing with back issues which haven't been identified correctly as of now (taking an MRI at the end of the month). I miss doing sports and not being limited, I feel somewhat useless. So I understand.

Casey says that the gear doesnt matter, but does the content. You should give more focus to your content rather than your camera gear.
They love technology. I don't think getting better cameras gets in the way of great content.
this guys are always talking about new equipment, this is a vlog, they focus more on the gear than the content and you can see that so clearly in the last couple months.. they've gone to bali and basically they made vlogs about nothing.. now they are in nyc and they make vlogs about cameras they don't know if they are getting or not.. etc etc the most import thing in vlogs and even more daily vlogs is the content and the storytelling and they are failing badly.. and beliave me the idea of getting a red must be exciting, having that kind of money to spend is always exciting but c'mon using that camera all day, everyday with the batterypack in your back pocket or in your belt is just a stupid to make a vlog.. but hey they can always start a channel about tech and camera gear..
thinking about that, if these vlogs about camera gear had some kind of information about the camera or why it would make a better vlog that would be more interesting.. but no.. the vlogs are about to spend money or not..
If you like NYC and travel vlogs checkout Erik Conover. He's a pretty good and interesting vlogger. You will see a lot of NYC content and the occasional trip to a nice place.

The Red footage comes out raw and needs to be color corrected. You'd have to do that every single day. Not worth the extra time for a daily vlog in my opinion.
Same process as the Leica, just different settings that we need to figure out. So no extra time once we have enough time on it... ;-)

Casey neistat uses a Cannon 80d and he's a lot more famous than you guys. His videos are also produced (edited) way better than these videos. Work on the basics first.

In my opinion, your job with the Leica is already so great! I love how it is now! And I'm thinking about Marcus: he's certainly very exciting now but he will have a tonne of work in the editing process with this RED camera... Not sure it worth it... Don't waste time with that, your image quality is very good, show us rather NYC please! :)
The Leica glass has a unique look that is signature to your videos. Even the Q. Perhaps a bigger screen for the SL for manual focus. Look how much you enjoy the Q just being able to take it anywhere effortlessly. I agree spending the money on a new adventure that will be so much more enjoyable for you all.

I understand that you guys are so excited about the RED camera, but I think that you sould stick for the moment to the actual setup. I love how your vlogs look now. Also they are way easier to shoot now. Plus, you will attract more attention in stores, terminals and so on with a RED camera.

I love the idea that you can shoot a blog on the RED, the only thing is with quick turnaround times to shoot Raw you will need a few SSDs as SD cards don't work with a RED. You will also need quite a jacked up laptop to process the large file sizes. On the plus side though, its mad street cred and the slowmo in 4K is legit! I'd vlog wit the Leica and then spend a few hours cruising around with the RED for those cinematic inserts you guys do so well.
