  • In Appalachia you'll often hear folks talking about "their people." Sometimes they mean their family or their friends and neighbors. Other times they mean other people who share their same interests. Thinking of your people often causes you to think of home. Watch this video to see some of my people and to hear one Pap's original songs.

How I love 'my people' how I miss so many of them, but how excited I am to watch the young ones come along and become 'my people'. In talking about your people, Tipper, you used the word "priceless" several times, and it struck me as being absolutely 100 percent fitting and proper. The look back into your family's history that you opened this presentation with impressed me as being priceless, before you uttered the word, and I can't begin to tell you how much I appreciate seeing the old photos and hearing Pap's original song that you chose to accompany those precious images. This video really touched me. I have boxes of photos of "my people" posed just like you did. Black and white pics, old people in rockers on the porch holding hands, young couple astride a big motorcycle or leaning against their "new" car. And rows and rows of children, mostly redheads. Never in my life did I hear my parents mention "vacation". We were always "goin back home". Mama and Daddy married in 1950 but Cleveland was never home. I was taken to WVA to show off to my Papaw the day they released me and Mama from the hospital! Six days later Mamas Daddy was dead and we headed back for the funeral. Mama didnt feel right until she was on the other side of the river. Thats why when Mama died we took her back home and laid her with her parents. Ill stay up here with Daddy and my sister and brothers. Seperated in this world but together in the next. Thank you Tipper. Its nice to hear people's recollections of the past. 🌹

Sister I feel it too. I have been lost in memories. I just got home after being out of town seeing and spending time with my grandson who is now a year and a half old. He is the youngest of my 13 grandbabies and I will be a great grandma for the first time come November. My youngest daughter and I spent so much time talking about family and all the things our family have went thru that have made us who we are today. I miss my momma so much and all my siblings. I miss the daddy I never knew. I love when my baby girl and I get together because she loves to hear the echoes of family past. We both find ourselves crying over the hardships they went thru and laughing over the silly things they said and done. My people worked hard in the coal mines and cotton mills. They played hard too. When we all would get together it was a wonderful experience. I am sad though that my children and grandchildren will never know those times in the past when communicating met you set on the front porch and talked and sang with family, friends and neighbors. It was about being outside not caught up in the TV and video games or constantly on the cell phone. My oldest daughter and youngest daughter of my 6 kids understand this. It's so easy to get lost in the world today instead of leaning on the Lord and know he will meet your needs. I am glad I was at my daughter's because I could feel my heart getting heavy. I lost my last sibling, my oldest sibling to breast cancer this time of the year 4 yrs ago. It breaks my heart every year when those days roll around where one of My people got to go home. God bless I really enjoyed the music

This really tugged at my heart strings. It took me back to my childhood, seeing my grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins in West Virginia. How I miss them.
My father had to relocate us to Ohio when the mines closed and I moved on to California as a young man.
I remember the times at my mom's family home when the sun went down and you couldn't see your hand in front of your face.
I remember my dad and his family getting together to play their instruments and sing. It was glorious in retrospect.
I can still remember with clarity the funerals of my loved ones where they were laid to rest in the Appalachian mountains.
Those mountains are in my heart even though I'm no longer in those mountains.

Granddaddy growed the watermelons for us. I have my daddy's fox horn. Yes that ox horn the man is holding to his mouth is used to call the dogs in from hunting. Daddy ran fox hounds but the horn was also used for any dog that was run at night. Before there was lots of roads and traffic the sound of that horn would carry cross country for miles. He filled our heads and hearts with a love for our history in the foothills of north Georgia. Actually, he filled all 4 of his children with a love for all history. We all truly enjoy hearing anyone's history, especially if it is similar to our rural, country heritage. I feel like anyone who loves the heritage you relate on here is "My People". I envy you and people like you who have had generations of family around for years. I was born and raised about 30 miles north of Cincinnati, Ohio. My immediate family were not ones to go many places. My dad had one brother and my mom had no siblings. I never knew my grandparents on either side of my family. We were not much to talk, so I didn't really know my parents. That's just how it was. My dad died when I wad 15... and I never once just sat and talked with him, ya know. My mom was the same way. It's like folks didn't know how to have a conversation about anything. There were orders given for chores... and the like, but no "What do think about this dad?". I missed out on that kind of thing. My sisters (3) are the same. They make little short comments, but no conversations about anything. It always made me hungry for words. Now people say I talk too much. God bless you and yours.❤

I just loved this video. I know how you feel about “your people “. I feel the same about my family. The video was wonderful and the music was so good. Your father was so very talented. I watched the video twice. I know how you feel about wishing to go back just for a bit to see your mom and dad as in times past. Memories are what I collect now.

Tipper, I found your channel during a search for homestead living, and I’m glad I did. I can’t explain it, but learning about life in Appalachia interests me. I’ve also watch several interviews of people in Appalachia. I think it’s their genuineness and love of family that draws me. In some ways it reminds of my upbringing in rural Michigan.

I and my brother live on the same property together, I where my uncle raised me up alot of weekend's with my cousin and brother down the hill where my great grandma lived and my parents up by the road in mama & papa's house, been here since 43 and I have been told I'll get the albums where a many of black white pictures of my family or as you say my people's. I know all my uncle's played music and I wanted to as well, even a few years ago studied tab and went into guitar center and bought a electric jackson with twin humbuckers and tried for awhile but other needs for money ruined that. life happens 🥲
Anyway I don't know why but I feel like with the right person and guided direction & writing a book could bring you great joy in sharing all the things about you and your people's! God bless Mrs tipper, much love from the Ouachita mountains of western Arkansas 👋♥️✝️🇺🇲 thank you for sharing!

I knew those were your people in the video. I loved it! I miss my people. Our family is dwindling down. I miss the old family reunions where so many came. I'm privileged to be called one of your people! I have thought of the stepping back in time, too. I think that those days passed so quickly, we took them for granted, but I long for them, too. It will be quite the homecoming when we're all together again. Thanks again for sharing your beautiful family. We are kindred spirits! Much love from SC, Jane❤️🙏

    Tipper,
Your video really touched my heart. Especially when you were talking about your dad. I lost both my parents last year, my father didn’t last very long after my mother passed after 60 years of marriage.
One of the many things they did together were “chalk talks” at different churches as well as prison ministries. My father, who was an Italian tenor, would sing while my mother created spectacular pictures. She also sometimes accompanied my dad on the piano. Your music reminded me of my father because he really loved the old-time country music.
Thank you for sharing your family’s stories and talents. We’ll all see our passed loved ones when we go to glory-/

Here I sit, an old man, who still misses his Granny and Pa, their house, the fields and garden. Eating a tomato just picked and still warm from he sun. Following Pa around, going into the woods with him and sawing trees. Every time I see one of those two man saws, I automatically think of Pa and me. Their house had four rooms, and each had a door to outside. All the rooms had beds in them except the kitchen. Granny could cook anything on that wood burning stove. There was electricity, but no plumbing. We drank from a bucket and a dipper, that ol' well drawn sulfur water. Hollyhocks, buttercups, honeysuckle, blackberry bushes, seven sisters roses, grapevines, cedar trees, they are all rooted deep within me. As are the memories... A beautiful video, beautiful song, thank you...

Thank you so much Ms. Tipper for sharing your family with all of us. I am very blessed to have grown up with good Christian "people". All those photos bring back memories of grand and great grand parents that have gone on to be with the Lord. Like the old song Precious Memories, how they linger, I find myself also thinking more about those days gone by. I'm sure it's because we are now becoming the older generation. There is going to be a great home coming day one of these days before to long and if I don't meet you here on this side, I'll meet you over yonder. We are "People".

Yep. When I left this area and started a family, I never forgot my bringin' up in the Crossroads. And when I ever came back, I always drove through there first. Went down the road very slowly, down to the old church, and stopped by the graveyard to say "Hi". It is like stepping back. Love that place.
