This is the wrong way of explaining. There is a mistake in the bottom line. After she corrects the 2 to a 3, the BB intersection becomes 4, as the min+1 of the 3 surrounding blocks is 3+1 and not 2+1. The bottom line should therefore read 54442. It is by co-incidence that her incorrect method comes out with the correct answer.

still needed 3 operations
It's still right. You would still need 3 operations to convert 'AAAA' to 'A' which is by deleting 3 A's from the first string.
