hey -- can you tell me just what Syd Barrett songs were played in this video? especially the 9:00 minute mark --i'm new to Syd Barrett .. what song is that?
The two most underrated telecasters ever are: ASATs and Japanese Fenders. I still miss my G&L S500, you can’t go wrong with G&L as the quality is always top notch, both on US and Indonesian made guitars.
Still have my G&L S500 also a asat tribute , no matter how many guitars over the years I've had and sold on at some point the S500 will always be my go to guitar 👍🎸
Really enjoyed this review. Your splicing of the same song with each guitar model was perfection. It really allowed the viewer to see a tonal comparison in close succession. I don't think I've seen anyone do that before. It must have taken ages to edit.
Just want to say, the Squire CV is a fabulous looking guitar! Absolutely love the olive green...I'd have chosen that one based on color alone...btw, nice review...
Thank you for another great video. Those G&L MFD pickups are the real deal. I have an ASAT Special with the Jumbo MFD pickups and they are some of my favorite pickups of all-time.
High fidelity is a great description of the G&L pickups. The drawback of the ASAT is that parts, like the neck, are not interchangeable with standard Teles, so if you want to mod it, you can not. My partscaster would have the Squier body, Sire neck, G&L pickups, 6 saddle ash tray bridge, and, Kluson tuners. Thanks for another great video Colin! Skoal!
Really nice that you summoned Syd Barrett for the sound samples. Also, I'm a happy owner of the Blues Boy version of the G&L ASAT, Thinline with humbucker at the neck, and I really like this guitar! Very pleasing to play and beautiful sound.
Hey Colin! Discovered your lovely channel just recently and been in love with your videos ever since! Just a college student here waiting to graduate so I can finally afford one the awesome Les Pauls you reviewed. It's been such a pleasure listening/watching your videos while I do my studies. Take care yourself!
Another fantastic review Colin! Really appreciate your honest thoughts. I am a G&L fan, I own 3 Tribute ASATs because a store here in the US kept putting them on sale and all were between $300-$400. I have the Classic Ash, the Bluesboy (with neck HB) and the Special (with two Jumbo MFDs). The special sounds amazing, those MFDs are so wide-range you can get into HB territory (like a LP) and change the tone to get a really full Tele sound. And I have added Fender 4-way switches to 2 of them to add the valuable series position.
Thanks for the new vid. I went through a pretty thorough process of testing lower cost Tele’s and for me it was a hands down Sire decision. For my money that is. Keep em coming brother.
As the owner of a modified Harley Benton Telecaster, a heavily modified Squier Affinity Tele, and a green Partscaster Tele, this video spoke to me. Great video as always!
I have the G&L. It cuts through fine, and you can go balls out without worrying about being too bright. It's all in the fingers anyway. I have no regrets😁👍. Love the tone!❤
I was rooting for Leo’s final design (if it was indeed his final go at improving his own invention. Who knows what plans were left on the table.) in the ASAT. I do love the olive green body on the Squire and I like the roasted maple neck on the Sire. I’d probably go for the G&L. Your playing was really on spot here Colin. Well done! 🎸 I’d love to hear you play a Richie Kotzen Tele with the thicker neck and the Twang King PU, adjustable bridge, etc…
@@theguitaristas hey, can you tell me what Syd Barrett song you're playing at the 9:00 min mark? i'm new to Syd Barrett and would love to look up that song
Hi Colin , what a fantastic full on comparison on Telecaster style guitars . Loved your playing on each guitar . To my old ears I loved the tone of the G&L followed by the Sire , the others just so close in sound . Brilliant job again 🎸🎸🎸
I agree that the Sire is very bright sounding, but that feels like one of the biggest aspects of the Telecaster. Bright, twangy, etc. I like it's neck the best to look at. Also people complaining about a 4-600 budget, I think the price range is reasonable. Sure you can find $1-200 guitars, but there is a lot of risk there. I've seen reviews of folks playing gems from companies like Firefly, but usually that ~$500 or so range is a pretty safe bet. Considering you're looking at a minimum $1300 for the Gibson name on the headstock or $800 for Fender,, it's a solid point to review around from well known companies.
Colin, try the G&L ASAT Special. I've had a 1990 USA version and a 2013 Indonesian "Tribute" version. The Tribute is still in my collection. They don't quite do the Tele twang, but with your love of P90s, I think you would dig the tones.
Hi Colin, thanks for another great vid. I do like the look and sound of that G&L. Really look forward to your look at budget T types though. I will be very interested if you do cover Fazley and Jet guitars: think they are made in the same factory? Been reading about / looking at both brands online for a while with interest but never seen either in person yet: spec and build quality does look good and at price where changing p'ups, tuners or saddles if not as desired would still keep em in the budget range. I reckon a good few of your subscribers, like me will really enjoy your budget tele vids. Keep it up Colin! Cheers Wayne
Hey Colin! Another banger video/comparison. It's my understanding that G&L uses the same quality pups in both the American and Indonesian guitars. The G&L sounded the best to my old ears!😊👍
I love Telecasters and I have 5 of them myself (1 Mexican, 2 Japanese, a self-build and a Chinese cheapo thinline which is surprisingly good). The 5 you demoed are all good instruments and like you say you could take them gigging and they'd all do you proud. I think I would probably go for the ASAT, I think that sounds the best. as for the price range 4-600 is affordable for most people but the Fazeley Telecasters are probably the ultimate in value for money based on the reviews I have seen. A couple of hundred quid gets you something very comparable.
That's good to know! I was curious about teles recently and now I really want one. I played a Fender Vintera 60s and it sounded really fantastic. The price was kinda high though. I wish I could test out an ASAT, but I can't find any around.
You sent me to Jupiter and Saturn playing those SYD Barret bits. I love piper at the gates of dawn, very special album as was SYD. No SYD no Pink Floyd.
Great video. I am fortunate enough to own a 2000 American G & L ASAT Classic semi-hollow and love it. I was originally wanting a Fender Telecaster but after trying the ASAT, I was no longer interested in the Fender. Really, the ASAT was Leo's improved version and last iteration of the Tele. I think the pups in it are unreal and every pole piece is adjustable; they are the best single coils on the market, in my opinion.
Lovely comparison. It's the Fender or Squier for me, preferably the Fender. Had a CV tele, it was mostly great but decided to trade it in on a Player Tele. Super happy with the Player. Cheers!
I’ve loved Telecaster’s from a very young age, because of Rick Parfitt. The classic colours always look good but the olive green really does look great. I’d take that one simply because it’s a different than normal vibe that really stands out. Great video as always Colin and cool to visit an iconic shape and model of guitar. You can’t beat a Tele! 🤘
Great video. I agree the Squier looks the best but soundvise i prefer the Fender Player. That glassy sound is so sweet. Put thoose pickups in the Squier and im good.
I am with you on all of your choices with one exception and one addition: I would use the Sire bridge because I like the full barrel saddle look, and I would add that I would use the wiring harness from the Fender guitar as it probably has the big boy electronics. Great video!
It was interesting hearing each guitar sound a bit different yet still sound like a Telecaster for the most part. It seems that you couldn't go far wrong with any of these. If I do get a Tele, I wasn't planning to but I get tempted, I would want mine in butterscotch blonde. For me, part of the desire to get a different guitar is to nod to history, so I have a preference for the most historically iconic colors. That's why my 335 is in cherry. If I were to get a Les Paul I expect for that reason I would go for either a traditional burst or a gold top. Anyway, I'm looking forward to your budget model comparison to see if one of them can tip me into full GAS. Thanks as always for the great videos.
I’m a hard sell. I finally subscribed because I’ve seen a lot of cool video from this guy now. He’s the kind of guy you take to guitar center with you when you’re buying something new.
I liked the ASAT sound the most, and the Squier body is the nicest imo. And the Fender neck too. I made a partscaster with a CV pine body and Fender neck, vintage tuners and bridge. Guess the old school ones are my favorites. Excellent comparison video by the way!
Oh my man you are the greatest..I've been asking all my favorite CZcamsrs yourself included what the best tele is today.,.it's the last electric in my "essential" collection of guitars and i wanted to test drive a few first.. awesome work brother

Started watching Colin and then the wife asks “is he got too many guitars? “ your 50 min video took over two hours to watch lol. As always, great video.
Oh me goodness, here I go again, as you mentioned which one your favourite is, the good ol' tried and true... and of course, the Name, that legendary Name on that legendary curvy headstock. It's that psychological trip once again that all we guitar players have for the two oldest and legendary electric guitar makers, Gibson and Fender. Simpley put...the Name = wow effect
One of the things that keeps me coming back to your channel is how you demonstrate a guitar by actually playing music on it, and pretty damn good too. No flashy twiddley twiddley, just nice fat chords and interesting progressions - actually music.
Thank You, Thank You Colin, what with so many choices, it's so nice to hear and see a good comparison and Review. And a pleasant weekend to ya. Cheers, Michael
Since I already got an ASAT, which inmho is the best, I'd go for the Squier with the nice colour and gut her pups n pots out to fit my liking. Glad I heard some Syd Barrett. Cheers!
That was a super review. I didn't know jack about teles except I don't prefer them before this. I can understand why some guitarists love them now though.I liked the G&L the best. As always some tasty licks mister. Looking forward to next week's content!
I never knew I wanted/needed a Tele until now, (I’m sure the wife would disagree 😂) loved the sound of that G&L. Loved your playing also. Thanks for a very watchable (and listenable) review 👍
Thanks! Have a USA Tele ASAT (MFDs, true about "high fidelity"!!): Amazing. FGN Tele w/ SDs: Excellent. Tele CV50: Great (plan to add Lindy Fralin Blues). Nice work, Colin.
I bought a Player Telecaster last year, 2021 model. I’ve changed the pickups to the 51 nocaster set and added an ashtray bridge. I love the guitar a lot, but it definitely had some basic issues: 1. The fret wear was almost instantaneous after a few weeks playing. More than I’d have expected, and I wasn’t putting hours and hours into it. 2. The pick-up selector switch. Cracked and had to be glued on within weeks. 3. The strap button at the bottom of the guitar. Begun unscrewing after a few weeks and eventually the thread inside the body completely wore so now it just pops in and out. Ultimately as much as I love the guitar, it was nearly 700 euro new and these things feel really avoidable at that price point from Fender. So it definitely was disappointing. Most importantly of course, it sounds amazing.
Hello Ryan. Can you point me in the direction of the ashtray bridge that fits the player series. I’m not wanting to do any drilling etc to make things fit. Thanks.
My favorites either the Sire or G&L....Love the Sire roasted maple, rolled edge /neck/fingerboard and locking tuners. Also love your playing Barretts's Astronomy Domaine !
Hi Colin, if you ever have a chance to pick one up, I’d love to see your review on a Fender Noventa telecaster. Single P90, string though body and brass saddles. I think it might be right up your alley….
The Squier Paranormal Teles are great, I prefer them to the CV Teles which I’ve also owned. I have a couple of pricier Teles, but the Paranormal Tele is still one of my favorites and well worth checking out. Good comparison, thanks! ✌️
A G&L ASAT Special is worth a review. Bigger versions of the Classic pickups and a much nicer bridge that does away with the Telecaster plate. Comparing with a P90 LP or SG would be interesting. I have four G&L Tributes a Legacy (HSS), ASAT Deluxe (HH), Fallout (H P90) and a Comanche (ZZZ). Necks all nice feeling. It's wrong but I miss you calling them arsehats.
Colin great comparison! Even though I've never been a Telecaster guy I can still appreciate them for what they are. I can see why you're keeping the olive drab green squire with the binding cuz that's the best looking one of the bunch in my opinion. Cheers! 👍 well done!
Great well edited and planned video Colin! For me right from the start I had made my mind up on sound alone. There wasnt so much obvious during the back to back first bit of playing on the bridge pups but for me what nearly always lets the tele down is awful lipstick neck pups. This is where for me the G & L shone brightest, followed by the Fender. All subjective but although they all sounded damn good the G & L price / sound seemed spot on over all the sound tests. Cheers for another great vid mate.
Great comparison. Loving it... got yourself another subscriber :) The way I figured this si: The difference between CV and Affinity (where I live) is EUR 285. I bought used one, so the difference went up to 310. So I just changed to original Fender parts: - pots + 4-way switch: EUR 60, - PUPs to Fender Ultra Noiseless Vintage: EUR 160 set (if you go Tex-Mex way it will be EUR 70 cheaper and some prefer true single coil) - Fender American standard tuning machines: EUR 50 - bone nut + a good setup (do it yourself or pay for it). The total came to EUR 270 + the setup which is about EUR 20 where I live. At the end the bridge and the wood are the only things Squier on it. AFAIC the bridge does the job and, if you pay attention when buying, the neck on an Affinity can be quite good too (apart from the fretwork, which can be corrected) ;)
I've had a number of Tele's over a span of 40 years and I still have a custom and an early Squier. I also have the same white Fender Player Tele with the maple neck and I'it's just great. Furthermore, I put a white one-ply pick guard on it and it gives it such a pristine, clean look. If I had to choose only one guitar for the desert island, it would be this.
Wow! Something about that ASAT just rose above the pack in sound. To my old ears it was chimey yet clear and punchy. Squier sounded 2nd best to me and the Tokai sounded muddy. Could just be the iPad speakers though. Your playing though…. Outstanding touch and feel. Bravo!
Kudos for this one, Colin 👏 I was really looking forward to the tele shootout and you didn't disappoint! Can't wait to hear the cheap competition next time, maybe you could throw the Squier in there just for reference? I especially appreciated the back to back bits of each guitar, which makes the comparison much more usable. Sure must have taken a lot of work but worth it IMO! If I should only choose one, I'd go with the G&L because of the excellent pups, individual brass saddles and a classic maple neck and board. Lookwise the Squier and Sire are killer for sure and the Tokai natural Alder body is beautiful, too. Cheers!
Great comparison! Although I loved the look and appointments on the Squier, the G&L was my fave. I just love them. Again, think about reviewing an ASAT Special (with the large "MDF" pickups - "magnetic field design"). Not sure how available they are in the UK. That Olive Green is sharp though, and with that binding! Hopefully the guitars will sell quickly - maybe one person will buy them all. But then, for those spending their cash on guitars, "A lotta people won't get no supper tonight" :) (thanks again for the Clash)
The Squier looks ace! They all sound lovely…Sire has a good bit of bite! Bridge a bit too bright for me…You’re playing is up there Colin. Mega rendition of Astronomy…
If anyone is a fan of the Telecaster, your review is an absolute must-watch. I highly recommend your content to anyone interested in learning more about this amazing guitar. Thank you for sharing your expertise with us!
Always looking forward to your Friday videos! Considering Harley Benton is one of the best bang for your buck guitars out there, why isn't one of their many Tele copies in your comparison?
That Jimmy Page bit was awesome! He’s the reason I got into teles. I’m looking to add a tele back in my collection so this is super helpful. Not easy to find but I’m looking at a Fender Lite Ash telecaster, def recommend checking one out if you come across one. Ash body, vintage style ash tray bridge with brass saddles, seymour duncan pickups, and a flashy birdseye maple neck with mother of pearl inlays I believe. One of the few made in Korea Fender guitars.
The Sire T3 is about the same price as the ASAT Tribute and Squire CV. Around $400 in the USA. For the lowest price, The Squire Affinity is really hard to beat. The body and neck are good. A good set up and new pick ups and it's a good guitar. The Squire Bullet is a thinner body, so if you want to save weight...The electronics are a little rough though.
The Tokai looks almost exactly like how I've modified my telecaster, so I have a bias towards the looks of that one. Doesn't sound very tele like, but I agree it has a very nice sound of its own. The Squier looks so good and sounds so good, at least coming through my speakers was my favorite tone. Would definitely be my first choice. Beautiful brightness without being too shrill. I wasn't crazy about any of the others tones.. including the real Fender. The Sire and G&L just look too different for me, but I think I am listening with my eyes . Great video and very nice tele collection coming together!
Delightful to hear so much Syd Barrett playing!
The Tele’s had to love being played so well.
Yeah I thought I noticed a bit of Johnny Cash in their as well 👍

One of the things that keeps me coming back to your channel is how you demonstrate a guitar by actually playing music on it, and pretty damn good too. No flashy twiddley twiddley, just nice fat chords and interesting progressions - actually music.
Thanks, that’s appreciated! 😁👍
Thank You, Thank You Colin, what with so many choices, it's so nice to hear and see a good comparison and Review. And a pleasant weekend to ya. Cheers,
Michael
Since I already got an ASAT, which inmho is the best, I'd go for the Squier with the nice colour and gut her pups n pots out to fit my liking. Glad I heard some Syd Barrett. Cheers!
That was a super review. I didn't know jack about teles except I don't prefer them before this. I can understand why some guitarists love them now though.I liked the G&L the best. As always some tasty licks mister. Looking forward to next week's content!
Brilliant comparison review, I went and bought the Fender on the back of it. I thought it had a bit more guts but not much to be fair. Many Thanks 👍
I have watched several of your reviews. I really like them, in how you go through the details in your style and viewpoints. ❤
I never knew I wanted/needed a Tele until now, (I’m sure the wife would disagree 😂) loved the sound of that G&L. Loved your playing also. Thanks for a very watchable (and listenable) review 👍
often finding myself come back to this video just to listen to 8:38
The fender had a clarity to it that none of the others quite had. A great show , loved the Zep
Cheers man!
Thanks! Have a USA Tele ASAT (MFDs, true about "high fidelity"!!): Amazing. FGN Tele w/ SDs: Excellent. Tele CV50: Great (plan to add Lindy Fralin Blues). Nice work, Colin.
🌟 Thanks mate that's appreciated! 😁🙏
Thank you for taking the time to make such an in depth review. I look forward to the next telecaster video!
Cheers Tom!
I’m tired of looking and not being able to make up my mind. You’re going to do it today with this video!
How did that go? 😆👍
Gorgeous playing and sound starting at "08:36 some playing starts here"
Would love to learn to play that -the loop, everything
Thanks Robert! 😎🙏
Check out the Harley Benton 25th Anniversary telecaster!
I bought a Player Telecaster last year, 2021 model. I’ve changed the pickups to the 51 nocaster set and added an ashtray bridge. I love the guitar a lot, but it definitely had some basic issues:
Thanks.
@@glederz I just bought the actual fender ashtray bridge. Slotted right on, as expected.
I think it might be right up your alley….
i sincerely think that ur reviews are the best ones and are so serious and exact...u r really incredible, and a great guitarist❤
😊🙏 cheers that’s appreciated!
The Squier Paranormal Teles are great, I prefer them to the CV Teles which I’ve also owned. I have a couple of pricier Teles, but the Paranormal Tele is still one of my favorites and well worth checking out. Good comparison, thanks! ✌️
Do it, do it now, make the partscaster. Another great episode with some more tasty playing.
I'm a sucker for the G&L Asat. Great review, Thanks
It's Friday 12 o'clock
And it's the Guitaristas'
Top of the pop's
🤟
😁👍
I enjoyed your Astronomy Domine moment in this video - the entire video was enjoyable, but that part made me smile.
😎👍
Great comparison. Loving it... got yourself another subscriber :)
The way I figured this si: The difference between CV and Affinity (where I live) is EUR 285. I bought used one, so the difference went up to 310.
So I just changed to original Fender parts:
- pots + 4-way switch: EUR 60,
- PUPs to Fender Ultra Noiseless Vintage: EUR 160 set (if you go Tex-Mex way it will be EUR 70 cheaper and some prefer true single coil)
- Fender American standard tuning machines: EUR 50
- bone nut + a good setup (do it yourself or pay for it).
I have just bought a Player Series Tele and Strat. No regrets!
Hello, From the StateS 🇺🇸
I enjoy your CZcams Channel!! Thanks For Sharing 🎸🎶 🇬🇧 ✌
Thanks for watching Patrick! 😎👍👍
Bravo!
Thanks that's appreciated! 😊🙏
The best thing about this review is listening to you play. It's gorgeous.
😊🙏
"Language Timothy" 😁
Col' your Videos are entertaining as well as informative ! Love it.
😆👍
Cheers!
Cheers Alan!
i’ve been looking at getting a tele lately but telling myself i didn’t need one!! just the video i (didn’t) need 😂
You definitely need one! 🤣👍
Hi Collin! Great video as always.
Can't wait to see the your partscasrer it should be an interesting video, once again loved your playing.⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐👍
Yes yes yessss, great solo from you🙌👏👏👏great review 🤘🤘🤘
😊🙏
Hi Colin, great job and your playing was on fire! Cheers Nobby
Thanks mate!
A nice one Christopher… I’m stoked you recognised the clash loop! 😆👍
Another excellent watch! You're the best, Thanks Colin!
Absolutely love the choice of music!
Great video, Colin. Like visiting the Playboy Mansion for Tele's. The Fender Player has it all in my opinion and at a good price.
Simple for me it's an 🇺🇸 professional 2 telecaster Miami Blue 👍‼️ I love the feel of the 🎸 , it's me ❗😊
Well that’s appeased my curiosity for another week. All good clean fun!
When you are picking the harley benton for the cheap ones, the 25th anniversary one, pick that.
The Squier looks ace! They all sound lovely…Sire has a good bit of bite! Bridge a bit too bright for me…You’re playing is up there Colin. Mega rendition of Astronomy…
Thanks that's appreciated! 😁🙏
If anyone is a fan of the Telecaster, your review is an absolute must-watch. I highly recommend your content to anyone interested in learning more about this amazing guitar. Thank you for sharing your expertise with us!
Thanks George that's appreciated!
I concur Colin. The Player Tele has the look and the G&L has the best tones out of the lot.
Always looking forward to your Friday videos!
Considering Harley Benton is one of the best bang for your buck guitars out there, why isn't one of their many Tele copies in your comparison?
There will be...
Awesome🎸《☆》Nice Comparo👍🏾🔔I like the flat Bridge. The Ashtray gets in my way🍺😁My PartsCaster would be🎸Squire body/Fender neck/G&L pickups✌😎☮
