When you said how it's scary to fall out of love with the thing you're good at. That hit me hard because it's happening to me and I have no idea how to get my shit together.
Languages have always been my thing. I can speak two languages fluently besides English and am currently learning Japanese and that was my high point last year. I've always understood grammar easily and always remberes new vocab just from reading once. But for the last couple of months I can't keep anything in my head and I'm falling behind and well. I'm kinda stuck. But I'm working on it . Probably. Posibally. Hopefully. It'll be better soon.
    Anyways
Thanks Jack for the vid. it made my day.
Always a pleasure to see you talk.

      I unfortunately relate :(
I am on my second university year studying computer science and I have had this whole "falling out of love" since November. This "feeling" goes away sometimes but I end up relapsing quickly especially when the courses I take become uninteresting and when we have too many projects to work on and I am not fond of them...
Anyway, I think that, as Jack said, the best thing to do is to give ourselves the time to read more about what we like. I personally often get the motivation back from reading about all the things I can learn and create at university. Talking to seniors also helps me because I can see all the opportunities there are out there for my degree.
      Good luck. Fighting (^ω^) !

It's really nice listening to a studytuber talking about their struggles as well but in all honesty, I've come to conclude that everyone in uni comes to a point where we question our choices and just struggle. It's part of the experiende, part of the demanding environment we are in and also we can change our minds and desires. I'm really glad you've found your love for your course again, re evaluating and remembering the reason why we started in the first place always helps 💛 CONGRATULATIONS ON 2ND YWAR JACK! 🎉 and can't wait for your summer travel vlogs!

I completely understand the notion of falling out of love with your degree choice. I started an English Language and Literature course at Oxford University last September, and as soon as I started I realised I hated it. It really shocked me because reading and literature have always been my biggest passions ever since I was a little kid, but studying them at degree level made me realise that, while I do still love reading, studying it kills my passion and makes even reading things I love into a chore. I ended up dropping out of Oxford after 6 weeks because of the severe downturn in my mental health caused by hating my course, the excessive workload (3, 3,000 word essays a week minimum, plus extra assignments on top- we even had an essay during Fresher’s Week!) being so trapped in the city and having no friends there despite my efforts to socialise as much as I could. I am now starting on a journalism course at Salford in September, and while I am so scared again for how it will turn out, I am so excited to be studying something that I genuinely have that passion to learn more about, in a place that is much more my speed, closer to home and in a city I know and love.

Sounds pretty much how most people feel about their second years - and more so for third year. Just know that in hindsight, it ends up seeming so easy and you'll laugh about how stressed you were about it all. You're going in the right direction if you've realized that your independent studies matter much more than the lectures. The lectures are just a rushed introduction to the topics, and you should just view them as a guide to make sure you're not going off in the wrong direction in your independent work. Once you figure out whats expected of you, and how to skip the material that's not relevant for the exams - it all starts falling into place.

I’m just about to finish my A Levels, but I experienced exactly the same thing as you this year. I’d applied to study Classics, and even before being rejected from Cambridge I found myself bored and resenting the subject. Latin was so difficult, and I was putting in a ridiculous amount of hours after school to do an extra GCSE in Greek. I felt that studying this was intrinsic to who I was and who I was meant to be, and not only would everyone see me differently if I failed, but that I would lose myself in the process. Late Jan/early Feb was a very weird time in my life too. Luckily, it turned out okay and I’m now on track to do Archaeology (hopefully at Durham!), but this was really interesting and frankly wonderful to hear. Your honestly and attitude are to be praised, Jack.

Sounds like you've nailed it - each year of a degree is more independent learning, less hand-holding. At Oxbridge lectures are optional as there's emphasis on independent learning from day one. Other universities make lectures compulsory, but aim to get broader each year and put more pressure on you to research deeper. If you went on to do an MA you'd find it even broader, and a PhD is no lectures, total self-directed study (with supervision meetings).

But in the second semester... I really burnt out and by the end of the year I swear my brain went missing. It felt like all the work I did is bullshit. Ended up failing because of silly mistakes I could have easily avoided. Because of that, I now have to continue working 🙌.

So yeah I get you completely. I think we've just come to that point in our studies where lecturers are just there to facilitate the learning process, one word they say could end up being the topic of an entire essay and such. I hope I get back on track this semester, we're doing two of my favourite novels of all time (pride and prejudice and the joy luck club) and I really want to do well for the sake of the books if nothing else. I stopped going to lectures in the second half of my first semester because personally, I felt that they weren't what I needed to succeed in my degree. When I first started skipping lectures, I was overcome by extreme feelings of guilt. However, I ended up achieving much better results and started enjoying my degree again.

I’m less than 3 months from finishing my Masters in English Lit at Lancaster University, and honestly, from my own experience and talking to others, second year was the hardest year of undergrad.
Like you mentioned, there’s a general feeling that you’re flailing your way through as the course suddenly becomes harder, plus you’re often living out of uni accommodation, sometimes having to deal with things like splitting bills so it feels a lot more “adult”, and the sudden realisation that everything now counts is quite daunting.
Third year definitely picks up though, as you’ve already got used to what’s expected of you from second year, and you can really start to specialise in the courses that actually interest you, and it makes the whole experience so much better!
Plus, everyone tends to want to do much more together as you start to realise that third year, and therefore uni as you have known it, is coming to an end...probably the only real downside to final year tbh!

I also did a lot of other things a long side my degree (in Medicine) and it wasn’t always easy.. it’s really scary in general when something you’ve always excelled at is suddenly sooo much harder. I’m really glad you had an amazing year, all things considered 😃.
Getting involved in stuff at uni is great but it’s never to late to get a new activity/hobby/whatever! I started pole dancing (as a form of exercise, not a job), at 25 and so many of my friends have joined societies, taken evening classes and started sports in the twenties, thirties etc. Never too late!
I have one question: I agree that lectures are usually too broad. I mainly viewed them as an introduction to a topic. Don’t you have any seminars or tutorials? I found small group learning much more in-depth and valuable.

You can study lots of other things in Sweden in English (plus it’s free, at least pre-Brexit, god knows what will happen now). Reem T I’m in Stockholm, Sweden I’m afraid. I don’t pole dance through uni though, I do it at a studio in the city. Depending on where you are, there might be a studio near you too. I can really recommend it! Great exercise (like full body agony type exercise), sooo much fun, a real challenge in a satisfying (and infuriating) kind of way, and surprisingly really good for body confidence, at least where I train. The focus is so much on being welcoming and kind to yourself and others, and I appreciate my body more for what it’s capable of and less for what size it is (or isn’t)

I’m due to retake second year as I’m changing courses and I had a huge burnout but I felt so baffled in my lectures half the time and there was so much reading to do as well! I definitely feel more prepared for it this September and I recognise now when I’m burning out but yeah second year is brutal, good luck with your third year! x

The same thing has happened to me a lot, and I guess it’s just natural :( I used to love computer science but when I did it at gcse I ended up hating it... it’s sad because I really found it interesting. Now a theatre/arts student, and half the time I feel like I’m still not 100% loving it even though it’s always been my “thing”. Honestly the stress of studying/exams makes you see things that you like in a different way and it’s weird. Although overall I still love drama, so I guess it stood the test of time lol

Welcome to University life and especially to being a Lit student. So many points of what you said I thought, yep, been there. The fact that you think that your lectures are becoming very broad is absolutely normal. They are supposed to give you a wider variety in specific areas from which you can in the end choose what you are more interested in and might want to focus more on / 'specialize' in; especially if you want to continue to get your MA/PhD, which will be mostly independent work. I suggest talking to your lecturers / professors if you are having a little trouble with coping with the change... Make use of those office hours 😉

i'm doing english lit/creative writing (also just finished second year) and i agree that i found the contact hours less valuable this year. i actually started to resent them towards the end of the semester, because it felt like i was wasting time i could have spent working independently - especially when i had weeks of lectures based on books i wasn't planning on writing about in my essays.

I did English and History at Durham and I also found that my contact hours for English were pretty so so. Seminars tended to be better but still not amazing (though I did love the lectures for Shakespeare - props always improve a lecture experience) I found the lectures in history more engaging and the seminars more useful - they actually helped when it came to writing your essays. It felt to me like the history department had actually thought about the best way to teach, while the English department was just doing what it had always done. If I were to do my degree again I’d probably do straight history and take a few English modules in first and second year.

  • @xEmmaberryx
    @xEmmaberryx Před 5 lety +1

Sorry this is a very long comment, I'm still figuring out how to reflect on finishing my creative writing degree. Wishing you did more in first year was literally my mentality going into my second year. I spent first year finding my friends and getting into spoken word and events within Derby. So I was determined to join a society in second year, and very nearly didn't turn up to the taster session because of my anxiety. I ended up being joint treasurer and secretary for my third year. Made some friends, who I sadly don't really speak to now I'm about to graduate. I never did the halls experience, but I miss how close all my friends were to each other for when I walked from my accommodation to theirs. We saw each other so much more then than we did in second year (when four of us lived together) and third year didn't have a social life outside of classes. I relate to the falling out of love with your degree, writing is hard, and I gave up numerous times on my work in second (self taught myself a module) and third year. I still found love in film studies, and sadly when I went through clearing I couldn't do the joint honours so the chance to do film modules I jumped at, and adored more than my degree choice. So my future looks to be maybe a career in film theory over novel writing. My advice for third year, especially dissertation, is get started as soon as possible! No matter how early you start, you will always find yourself wishing you started earlier (I started over the summer before third year and still had multiple breakdowns throughout the year because I thought I was falling behind). And make the most the third year - it'll fly by so quickly! Again, sorry for the long post, I haven't yet done one reflecting on my university experience yet and it just flooded out now.

I am also an English lit student in second year and I understand what you mean by lectures being broad, they are a sort of starting point, and then a lot of work needs to be done outside of class, for example a lot of the notes for exams are all done by ourselves, and truly half the time lectures feel like a waste of time, especially by the end of the semester. I attend a maltese university but I have also experienced erasmus in an irish university, which was higher on the university list than the maltese university, and tbh the lectures for the Irish uni were the same if not more general than my home university

Made use of the resources that the uni have knowing I’ll probably never have that access again. I did media and communication so making use of like the studios, equipment and stuff was important! finishing is a weird feeling. I hope you enjoy 3rd year as much as I did ! Also it is stressful like omg the workload doubles and there will be points you just wanna quit because dissertations are horrible but over all I found 3rd year amazing. just remember to do your dissertation in chunks and don’t work yourself too stupid ☺️
