    I work more in the field of urban forestry, in a town aptly nicknamed "Tree City", but I can, from experience, in-depth research, and a multitude of others' observations, tell you that cutting down this tree, and many like it, will allow many other trees to grow significantly healthier.

      You are pointing out an outdated view of forestry. These large pines have a different gene pool and are suitable for reproduction. She could still outlive us. The concept of removing such large (over-ripe) trees has already been revised by both science and foresters since writing your comment.

He cut down a tree that was doomed to fall within a few years anyway. At least by him cutting it down he was able to make sure it fell in such a way as to not damage any of the younger growth.

    To all the ignorant do-gooders on here who don't understand the factors at play and reasons one might fell a tree.
    I am a tree surgeon, I adore trees and that is why I devote my life to working with them, primarily it is my job to keep them healthy and alive, felling is always the last option but there are so many factors and reasons for why it is done and not to forget the wonderful things that happen afterwards, especially in woodland, look it up.
    Remember, nature never intended any tree to live forever and sometimes it is better to fell a tree in a controlled way when it is reaching the end of its life, rather than leave it to come down on its own potentially causing a huge amount of destruction.
    In the forestry world conifers are planted and harvested as a crop just like wheat or barley, and again I don't see a problem with this, it's a sustainable means of harvesting timber.
    Of course it is always sad when a tree has to come down but don't be so blindly outraged, learn the facts before you start spewing hatred from all holes.

It also looked pretty ugly. Possibly, it was dead already. Removing trees from a forest can be a good thing, as it helps the ones that are left. Then, you can plant 2 trees in its place and it will be ready for harvest for future generations. How creative.

What about the wildlife and plants that rely on what meager land we don't develop or take for our own? We have already removed over 80% of the worlds forests, and that number continues to rise. The human population continues to rise at astounding rates and we are using resources faster than the earth can sustain long-term. You only consider forests value, in what it has to offer us humans. You consider nothing else. That ideology says all I need to know about where your mindset it.

    • @bcubed72
      @bcubed72 Před 8 lety

      Actually, hunting males has little effect on the future population, because the remaining bucks can just knock up more does each. What really does harm is to reduce the number of viable wombs...

    • @Sgtassburgler
      @Sgtassburgler Před 8 lety

      The population matters little, what matters is the quality of the elk genetics which are ravished when hunters choose to kill healthy, strong, big, and many pointed bucks instead of weaker and smaller bucks with less points. Elk are big and supposedly used to be bigger just like wolves, but they are still big. Even small male Rocky Mountain elk are at least 500 lbs. and Roosevelts that are small are 800 lbs at least. That is plenty of meat for any hunter or family for nearly 2 years (depending on the number of your family members and their size of course). So why not just let the healthier stronger bucks live instead of degenerating the elk species to where someday the largest elk will be as small as today's smallest elk?

    Does the tree shake the ground when it hits like that? be nice to feel that kind of impact. slow, hitting things on the way down, thump, a rumble maybe... i love the cracking and creaking noise; watch out!

    • @camachinist
      @camachinist Před 5 lety

      Yes, and from far smaller in diameter timber than this. It's the velocity from the height of the tree and its mass and gravity creating the impact force. Felt some only a week ago when neighbors were taking a few old-growth out while putting in a road. Shook the house pretty good. Nothing over four feet in diameter but firs 80-100' tall. I have a redwood on my place that's nearly 7' in diameter and 120' tall. It'll be there long after I'm gone. Thanks to skadill for his many, many contributions to lumber history and sharing them with us, especially the videos of vintage logging equipment.

    What's the purpose of killing the tree?

    • @skadill
      @skadill Před 7 lety +34

      I'll check in with the root rot,bug infestation,lighting strike and natural end of life cycle,and come up with a reason later

    • @aljefferson6722
      @aljefferson6722 Před 7 lety

      So you killed it so diseases didn't spread to other trees?

    • @skadill
      @skadill Před 7 lety +39

      Because the word killing-it already suggests a huge bias and feeling against what was done here.The word cutting,or harvesting,or removing is far less emotionally charged,and better responded to and respected

      @aljefferson6722 Před 7 lety +6

      skadill Have you ever been in an biology class? You'll know that a tree is a living organism. It is alive. Once you cut it, it's dead. It no longer grows, react, reproduce, ect. I'm not going to sugarcoat something so it sounds nicer to some people.

    I would have liked to have seen the cross section of the end of log. From what I could tell by pausing as it fell, it appeared to have quite a bit of rot, which would be expected from a tree this old and with a blown out top. Also, was it located near a heavily used public area? If not, why cut this tree. The habitat structures it provided will not be replaced in the lifetime of the products it provides.
    For the record, the only trees I usually hug are when I wrap a diameter tape around them after I have painted them blue to harvest. I will oversee the harvest of over 2 million feet of timber this year and most of that volume is from trees 3-4 feet in diameter. I am not opposed to cutting trees and agree it can benefit the stand. But I would have never cut this one.

      +skadill OK use it or lose it. It was dead? Those trees can go over 1500 years. 22 feet around puts it over a thousand years. But I am no tree hugger. It's just killing something in my opinion should have a reason, a legit reason especially something historical and old.

Get a life and heckle yourself.
