  • Watch the documentary about Andrew Young as part of the “Our Voices: Our Stories” series produced by the Ford Motor Company Fund and the Andrew Young Foundation. You’ll hear Ambassador Young share stories about his time as a pastor, politician and activist while serving as a close confidant to Dr. King throughout the civil rights movement and as Executive Director of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. He reveals how these experiences shaped him and prepared him for public service as a U.S. Congressman, United Nations Ambassador and Mayor of Atlanta.
As the philanthropic arm of Ford Motor Company, the Ford Fund provided financial support to produce the “Our Voices: Our Stories” documentary series which raises the voices of Black Americans to ensure their legacies are heard and shared today, and for generations to come.

No one (including MLK) said he did it all by himself. He would be the first to say so.
But he did take a bullet to the face so everyone can freely debate and diminish his contribution without being lynched for it, tho.

I grew up in Berkeley, CA, during the era of the Black Panther's, as well!!! My birth was in 1959, December, so I was very familiar with the Black Panthers. If it wasn't for them there would be no traffic signals in certain busy areas of Berkeley or Oakland or various other places. One of those, was on King St. & Ashbey Sts., & Market & 40th Sts., in Berkeley & Oakland perspectively. They were responsible for quite a lot of positive accomplishments, as well!! Thanks for the accomplishments of The Black Panther Party. Early Civil Rights was a good part of history. Let's NOT forget!!!

I was born July 19,1964. I grew up in West Oakland, The Bay Area. Coming out of the end of the BlK Panthers Era. We were very very Blessed.Unlike Southern States like Texas & Others We were taught our Blk History as much as the teachers knew from preschool on up.That was the say it loud I'm Blk & I'm proud era. I had the biggest crush on Andrew Young as a young girl. I also grew up in Church & And come from a long line of ancestors that was Holy Rollers. My Mom sent me to Waco, TX for two yrs. For enrolling myself in school of my choice she didn't approve of. So two yrs in TX. With my Dad's Sister Was my punishment.La Vega High. I was the only BlK in many of my classes. This wht boy who meant no harm, asked me how do I feel being the only BlK in the class. I was so tickled, I laughed Soo hard. With hair down my back. I thought Blk People was the superior race. Back then I attended all Blk Catholic Schools. But the nuns didn't wear Habits. They wore their own clothes , but before we graduated 8th grade.Even from kindergarten you mastered in all yr classes, before you went to the next grade.Yes you did get the paddle if you cut up in class in public or Catholic schools. They don't make Teacher's, Mom's, Dad's like that no more. I attended Berkeley High in the 10th Gr. On.My Wht male teacher in my government class taught us how to Demonstrate & Fight for our civil rights. Before gentrification Oakland & The schools was primarily Blk.Those was beautiful times I feel for Generation xyz Today.

Thank you for this historical video. I remember vividly that day in 1968. I was getting ready for school and I felt an awful feeling in my soul. Even though I was not exposed to politics at that time, I felt a very deep feeling that taking the life of this peaceful man was totally wrong. Some years later, I had the privilege of serving members of MLK family on a flight when I became a flight attendant in 1972. They were so polite and quiet. There was something very different about them. What a privilege to have served them. One memorable flight, I can’t still see them. Someone will pay on that judgement day. He was a great conservative Republican who knew the real meaning of democracy, not what we have now. Thank you MLK!

I lived in Atlanta from 1971 to 2002. I remember Mayor Young. He was very respected by both back and white people. Corretta, Hosea, Mayor Young...I remember them all. Wish Dr. King was around back then. I am thinking while all the ignorance has not yet been eraticated thank goodness it exists only in small pockets. When President Obama was elected I just wanted to hug every black person in my sight! Some of the rural south is still ignorant. But I see progress every day. BLM!

This is awful and painful to watch. My grandmother was white, and I was raised in Arkansas in the early 70’s and I never experienced racism. However, when I moved to California in the mid seventies, I noticed that the schools were vastly different. I experienced racism in the late eighties while attending college. I’m grateful for my grandparents and great grandparents. I asked my mom if she experienced racism and she said that my grandmother was strict, and only allowed her and her siblings go to school, and play basketball 🏀 I believed her, because my mom was strict 😁😂🤣 my grandmother didn’t allow us to venture outside of the front yard. My great grandparents were very strict too, and so was my great aunt who lived down the road from my great grandparents. I was very intelligent at three years old and I pretend to be feeding the horses, or playing with the dogs. 😁😂🤣 I would walk down the road about a mile to my great aunt Nellie house for a slice of homemade coconut cake. 🤷🏽 I believe everyone white knew I belonged to my great grandparents and no one bothered me. One day in the 4th grade I walked all the way home from school to my grandmother’s house and almost gave her heart attack 😁😂🤣I never walked home again. I didn’t understand racism, especially when your half your family is white 🤷🏽‍♂️

This man said he was a man of the cloth , but NOT one time telling his story, did he glorify or thank GOD. Not one time, did he say he was blessed. This man said in so many words, that he and Martin Luther King was chosen to do a work for GOD. People, you better understand that Only GOD could give that kind of strength and determination for righteousness!!! ONLY a powerful and wise GOD can instruct them in wisdom to defeat the white man, Shame on him!! GOD said " I will not give my glory to another". Garza in the BIBLE said to certain scribes " If they are if GOD then you will not fight against them, BUT you will fight against GOD. Those white people understood VERY well, they were fighting against supernatural power and strength. I guarantee Martin Luther King understood he was chosen due to GOD given dreams. SAD he too never mention GOD in any of his speeches!! Yet his name went down in history. Well I thank GOD, amen!! Hallelujah!! Micah 7:8, Isaiah 42:8, Acts 5:39.
