The Story of Swag: A Prodigy Banned (CS:GO)

  • Braxton “swag” Pierce was once one of North American Counter-Strike’s fastest-rising stars. Now, he’s on the sidelines.
    But before he was permanently banned from Valve events, swag was considered by some to be the next great NA player, and there were plenty of indications that it might happen.
    Born in North Carolina in 1995, swag was seven years old when he played Counter-Strike for the first time. Initially trying the game at his cousin’s house, his obsession with the game was not immediate. Like so many players though, he was eventually sucked in by CS 1.6.

      @Fulkrom there actually isn't any proof that Pete Rose threw any games, and considering the intensity at which he played many people don't believe he ever threw a game. What he did do that was against the rules was bet on games, which has been a big no-no since the 1919 Black Sox scandal in which players did throw World Series games. It's been almost 100 years but that ruling still holds up, anyone who gambles on baseball while involved gets a lifetime ban, even one of the greatest hitters of all time. I'm just learning about what Swag did, and despite how I feel about him having a stupid (yet fitting from what I understand of his playstyle) name, his offense doesn't stand up to what the 1919 White Sox did.

    • @SteefPip
      @SteefPip Před 5 lety +2

      @Christian Dales though that conversation was had early last decade when it came to poker. Yes competitive gaming and poker are games, and the loosest definition of sport is a game. I disagree with Rick Fox when he says esports competitors are athletes, but to say these aren't sports is insulting considering the effort they put into competing.

      Here's a quote from whuderE on an hltv post where I think he does a good job on explaining why the game was thrown:
      "The match was meaningless for IBP, even if they lost all of their remaining games, they would still finish first place overall going in to the LAN finals. Netcode Guides however, NEEDED to win in order to finish 4th place and make it to the LAN. Now here's the kicker, Dazed was not only the in game leader for IBP, he was also the Co-Owner of Netcode Guides. Obviously Dazed would want NCG to make the LAN as it is direct exposure for his company's brand. It's funny that CEVO got almost zero flak for allowing this conflict of interest in the first place."

    let's say you're a 1st year apprentice. Your boss tells you to do something and if you dont, you will be out of a job and without pay. You do it because it's the first real boss you have and they're supposed to be guiding you to make you better at you craft.
    now put yourself in Brax's shoes. 17 year old kid, not getting paid by his org, needs money to prove his worth to his family and is instructed to throw a game by his mentor and leader with the impression that the game wont effect their season because they're locked into finals and they'll receive ~$700 for doing so (again, money was a big reason they agreed to throw the game because they weren't being paid). Valve also never banning anyone for throwing games previous, left them feeling like if they're caught, it'll be a slap on the wrist.
    For a 1st time offence, for the 1st recorded time of anyone being caught of throwing a match, and for being a minor, Brax (and the other bans in the original list) should've been given a 6 month - 2 year ban as punishment and to set an example to the community of why not to throw and if he or anyone else in the community threw a game in future, it would be a lifetime ban.
    In conclusion, Valve had every right to ban them, just the lifetime ban was seen as an easy way out for Valve instead of setting a precedent for people in the future. 1st time = 6month - 2 year ban, 2nd time = lifetime ban.

It was famous solo "322" action and it wasn't life ban because that was first time when someone was found with pants dropped. A 1 or 2 year ban should have suffice, along with effort from the players to show reform. Swag especially has made strides in that sense if I remember correctly. A perma ban was just uncalled for. Especially for someone wasn't even old enough to be considered a full fledged adult at the time.

      No one disagrees the ban was deserved. We disagree a permanent ban. Especially now because 99% of tournaments have already unbanned a few years ago.
      Not only was Swag not a legal adult when the match fixing took place but also the players were very underpaid at the time. CSGO was in a dark time when this took place. Everyone was expecting for it to fail and to move to another game. It literally says they only got $700 each for fixing a match. Shows how much they were underpaid at the time because they would risk their career for only $700.

    I get they need to set an example.. but ruining their careers is harsh... $700 is nothing especially in skins... obviously it's not about the money but i just think they should have to pay a fine like they can compete but can't win prize pool money for a few seasons or something but still allow them to be sponsored and have a career... this has gone on for long enough.. majority of people that think swag deserves this is obviously someone who hates on successful people.. the kind that would spit on a Lamborghini
